Hey everyone,
I'd like to know what sort of IAT temps people are seeing with OTRCAI, speed, and at what ambient temps? (Where's Oz?)

Mine the other night
IAT 23C @110km/h - ambient was about 18

Hey,

If we are talking constant speed on highway then the various cars I have looked at are usually about 10-15*C above ambient. That said, it has been previously heat soaked and that is what they tend to settle back to - just in my observartions. 5* is really good as far as accuracy goes.

Without heatsoaking still about the 10*C seems fairly common to me - (looking through logs)

Perhaps those with AeroForce guages or similar can comment

Yep, approx 5-10 degrees above ambient if not heat soaked is what I've seen with mine.

If heat soaked, temps can be 15-20 degree above ambient. The stupid thing is that the intake temp is nowhere near that in reality, the sensor might be but the air entering the intake is not.

Heat radiated from the engine heats the rear of the OTR and hence the IAT but the front of the OTR can be cold to touch. I'm not sure how you overcome that but NARF ... :bravo:

Heatsoaked - started at 46C after driving home and sitting for about an hour in driveway. Dropped down to 25C within 5mins driving

Hmmm - extend wiring -> relocate IAT closer to TB?

I was actually thinking of moving the IAT to the front of the OTR where it can get a more accurate IAT reading which should be freer of heat soak and polluted readings caused by heat generated from the block and radiator.

Not sure if this is the right thing to do but my logic says it makes sense ... :)

My K and N Air Charger use to see a steady 10 deg higher then ambient temp all the time. Yeah hotter in sitting traffic.

I have since shielded it with reflective thermotec heat shielding and its only ever 4 deg over.

I suggest doing 2 things.

Spend $30 and buy some Thermotec heat shielding, you can get it in tape or sheet form. Put one layer under your OTR then also wrap your sensor around the IAT sensor.

I would post up a pick but I dont have my car ATM :)

You WILL see lower temps.

Good luck mate.

Highway cruising +4* on ambient. Powertorque otr.

Perhaps can adjust iat correction table to compensate for "false" readings... eg sitting in staging lanes at drags, intake can go >70* where ambient is <20*! :hmmm:. PCM pulling out lotsa timing.

When I had an OTR I always saw around 5 degrees above ambient, sure they start heatsoaked but after 5 minutes generally down to 5 degrees above again. Although several times in Canberra I saw below 0 intake temps, and the scan guage only goes to 0 so it was showing 65534 (-2) intake temp!

I've seen up to 70* in Sydney traffic, and no blower attached!

I wonder if it's possible to use the heat shield from between the PCM and the engine (after a PCM reloation) underneath the OTR, i cant think if it will be big enough??
Just a thought.

Lyndon that wont work AFAIK due to that heat sheild being thicker then the tape and this will make the OTR sit to high....AFAIK.

Let us know how mate.

BOMI : mind if I ask where you got your heatshield from? my alloy intake see's over 45* daily.....

On the freeway, mine will sit 3 deg above the ambient temperature. Haven't really tried it sitting in traffic. I use one of those scangauges that plugs in the ODB port thingy under the dash..

I have the IAT in mine right at the very front away from the heat source so
it reads very close to ambient. It's ambient air going in to the motor so thats the temp we need to measure correct ?

cheers

Yes mate thats correct, try to keep the IAT away from heat, heat equals your cars PCM taking timing out of the engine to protect it, this equals less power.

On the highway in cool conditions, my throttle body is cold, yep, cold, so the air going into the engine is cool, maybe 1 or 2 DEG higher then what the IAT reads, this should make for accurate temp readings.

Hope this helps.

Oh and Dopey, I use the stuff that is from American auto parts, cant remember the name but you can get it in rolls or in sheets. It comes in a hard plastic holder thing LOL Sorry I cant remember the name man.
