View Full Version : Stuffed Brake Fluid
Well after the last track day a few weeks ago at Wakefield Park, my brake fluid was in need of a flush and change.
So with the help of Gilly we flushed the SS' stoppers and look at what came out.
This is Castrol Super DOT 4 after being boiled big time on the track :puke:

That's what mine looked like when it last came out of the Coupe Troy ... coffee & coke mixed together ... not pretty.
Hope the weather holds off for you boys, you know what is predicted all weekend. :hide:

Dude bong water? Looks more like what sits in a septic tank!
What are you a stoner or something? hahah :stick:
I see a IV giving set there troy, nice work - hospital supplies are always helpful around the house and on cars. Try and and get some micropore tape, very good for taping things without leaving a sticky gooey residue.

What fluid did you end up replacing it with ? Use a PBR 600 or Motul RBF600.
Here is a tip for people.
After a race day open the bleeder on the caliper after slipping the clear hose over the bleed nipple and push the pads/piston back. This can be done on all four wheels .This will push all the old fluid that sits in behind the piston out and allow fresh fluid to replace it therefore less chance of causing any problems and no major fluid flush to be done.BUT don't forget to tighten the bleeder nipples back up , top up the fluid in the reservoir and pump the pads back out so you have brakes again.
PS.If you boil the fluid and it looks like BOMI's you will need a complete flush though.

Best way is to find a workshop with a pressure bleeder I reckon. Simple as all get out and a lot less messy.

Other than that, start on the longest hydraulic line, usually the left rear, bleed it til the fluid runs clean, then go on the next longest and so on. It's a 2 person job though.
Thats the next HOW TO I was planning.
Thanks for the tips there RBS MATT

Can be done solo but tis a slowish process. You can gravity bleed but as said ... can be slow.
Quick explaination and does require 2 trolley jacks or means or raising front/rear of car to do it but:
1. raise car on jacks and remove wheels.
2. Ensure rear of car is slightly lower that front.
3. Ensure pedal is firm before commencing.
4. Open rear left bleed nipple and let run until fluid runs clear then re-tighten.
5. Open rear right bleed nipple etc etc etc
6. Raise rear of car and lower front slightly.
7. Check reservoir and top up as needed.
8. Open left front bleed nipple and let run until runs clear and retighten.
9. Open front right bleed nipple " " " " " " " "
10. Top up reservoir and re-check all bleed nipples.
11. Test pedal for firmness.
12. Voila-ish (hopefully) :)
Admittedly not the best method but in a time of need you can bleed your brakes by yourself with good success.

PS Top piece of info Matt and bloody smart too. Simple and effectvie. Thanks for the tip.
