The other day driving to Sydney i had an interesting conversation with the Wife, A nice HSV Coupe' drove past, she mentioned that it was a great looking coupe', but pronounced it "coup a", now ive always pronounced it "coup" like in the chicken variety, She then went on in her school teacher way explaining why normally when the 'e' has the accent or something above it its pronouced 'a'. How does everyone else say it?? am i wrong or is she!!!

shes right about the accent thing,
when it is spelt coup?, the correct pronunciation koo-pey
when it is spelt coupe, it is pronounced koop
coup? is from a french word, coupe is coup? miss-spelt, its was miss-spelt so much it stuck.
I say COOP and sometimes I say COOP-A, I dont know why but I just do.
If its spelt with and accent on the top of the E then its COOPA not COOP.

We're in Australia so it's pronounced coop.
If I was explaining what I drove to a foreign woman I would pronounce it coop-a. :yep:

Interesting... but coop 4 sounds so much better than coop a 4!
The ? on the ? means "ey" or "ay", like "caf?".
So it's "koo pay". Eg: Nick's car is a "Koopay 4". :)
Never heard anyone refer to them as "coopa's" before, unless it's a Mini Cooper, which is of course a different word. :p

I agree ... :D
I know that technically it's a "Coopay" 4, I just feel like a wanker saying that, to me it's a Coop 4.
So yes ... I say "Coop", not "Coopay"

Then again, look at us with Porsche.
Someone once told me (not sure how true it is), that we are the only country that pronounces it PORSH.
However there is no debate as to the pronunciation, as Porsche is a family name, and the family members pronounce it PORSH-uh.
Also Mo?t & Chandon. We all (well no t me) call is MOW-ey. This would be following the French convention. BUT, Mo?t (whilst forming a French company) is actually a Dutch name, so its pronounced MOW-et
Ahhh, such fun.

I say COOP and sometimes I say COOP-A, I dont know why but I just do.
Same here. If its, say, a BMW Coupe I say, "Koop-pay"
If its a Coupe4 I say, "Koop-4"
If its a Hot Rod '32 Coupe, I say "Koop"
So, yeh...

Sorry Mrs Goanna ... but saying you drive a V8 Holden "Coupay" is just asking for a beating.
Europeans say Coupay ... but who wants to be like them ??? Everyone knows that when it comes to the English language Australians are allowed to make up there own rules ... :yep:

Simple ... wannabe 4 door. :waving:
:lmao: ... thanks Mr converted his SS into a Monaro with 4 doors. No Coupe driver has EVER wanted 4 doors, plenty of 4 door drivers have wished they had a Coupe.
