Hi,
Never ever bled brakes before (have only ever done pads and rotors, never calipers).
Was going to get a cheap and cheerful one man bleed kit for $15
http://i9.ebayimg.com/06/i/000/a1/e2/42fa_1.JPG
Would that be good enough?
Looks pretty cheapo quality.
I notice they go up rediculously in price after that
There's this for $70 ... which has a tyre adaptor fitted to it, so you plug it in to a tyre (20psi) and it will pressurize the fluid in the reservoir provided allowing one man to bleed the brakes
http://i14.ebayimg.com/01/i/04/36/f8/86_1_sbl.JPG
But goes on to say "Note will NOT fit Australian large type Mater cylinders as fitted to some cars; you could adapt something (up to you). "
Then there's this $25 option.
Looks a little bit better than the first

What do I do? Is the cheaper one suitable?
Once I have one, I'll be back here asking how to use it :)

Do we presume Seedy has no friends?
Flame suit fitted and ready to go
I think i have the cheap one, used it a lot. Worked well. The only problems with it, the bottle/reservoir is a bit too small, but i guess that is constrained by the magnet. Perhaps go the $25 option i reckon

My bleed kit is called Dave ... I sit in the car with my foot on the pedal and he tells me what to do ... works really well !!!
Not sure you can get one on Ebay though.
Seriously though ... I'd be interested in trying one of these things, is it hard to do Dunc ?

I notice you fill the caliper first? Then do you do the lines?

I'm thoroughly confused.
As I said, I'll be asking for a heap of help when its go time

HUH ???
I'm pretty sure the bottle gets attached to the nipple on the caliper, you then open the nipple and when you pump the pedal it draws the fluid from the reservoir through the brake lines and into the caliper.
This pushes the air out of the lines and when the fluid is clear and has no bubbles to close off the nipple again. Making sure you top up the reservoir as you go of course.
Tiger ??? Where are you ???

yes i've used them, and bleed 100's of brakes.
yes the bottle is too small for the rear if your pumping it all through clean.
the idea is not to let air back into the system.
attach the hose put the empty bottle above the caliper, undo the nipple do about 6 pumps and the bottle will be getting full.
the idea is the fluid getting pumped out the nipple will come back down the hose and not allow air to get back in before you lock off the nipple...
if you need to empty the bottle, lock off the nipple first, then restart.
your taking out fliud at the caliper not putting it in.
some more tips if bleeding fuild out and the lines are NOT empty due to caliper change:
empty the master of old fluid, fill with new first.
if changing pads, don't push the piston back in with the nipple closed, add the one man bleed kit, open the nipple push the pads back. this pushes the old shit fluid out and not back up the lines and overfilling the master.
empty system due to caliper change.
keep pumping until it comes out with no bubbles. for an empty system the pressure method would be easier.

2 mans job with a big bottle and hose
on every upstroke of the pedal the nipple is locked off so no air comes in, release nipple during downstroke only....
master has one way valve so shouldn't suck back, but they can leak a little, so better not to risk it....

all the above
or you can make a one man kit with some hose and a coke bottle. just use a long pce of hose loop it up over the spring and down to the bottle

Not sure what you mean Seedy? fluid comes down through the lines into the caliper and out through the nipples.

ahhhh ... line feeds fluid in to the bottom of the caliper, and runs out through the top nipple. Which then feeds into the collecting bottle.

Yep but depends on the caliper. Generally the main line feeds into the backside. In the case of the AP racing calipers there are two bleed nipples. Probably a good idea to bleed via both nipples, starting with the one furthest
from where the line enters the caliper.

do yourself a favour and put some flewy hose on the nipple then into a old coke bottle with a hole in top and put some fluid in the bottom of the coke bottle and pump that all i use all day every day no dramas no comebacks

Thats what I use to, not a prob, dont waste your money on a bottle and tube, but hey its your money so go for it if you want.

I used one of them and its the best thing ever and it eleiminates the need for friends. It even comes with an adapter for calipers that have two bleed nipples.
I got mine from Repco, it looks the same as the one in use above.
