View Full Version : Exhaust pipe temps.
Need some info regarding how hot/what temps the actual exhaust pipe work can get up to?
Talking about a TT application,so with this in mind, what temps can I expect just past the exhaust side of a turbo housing?
TIA.

i dont know the exact temp but i cant touch the corners of my bonnet or guards when i have been for a thrash:)
Has anyone got an infa-red temp gauge handy?Need to know what temp HPC I need for the pipe work.
Kiwi, have you looked into hpc-ing (ceramic coating) your pipe work?
So far prices vary from $600 to $990 for the higher temp coatings.Think I'll just go for the 900*C stuff......
I'm just trying to cut down the engine bay temps as much as possible, not saying it is an issue with this system, just my preference.
I'm also looking at the high temp bags/tubes that can be placed over exhaust or even after the inter-cooler pipe work, see this stuff on alot of late model euro trucks etc.

In the past when I used to work on turbo cars (VL turbo) and running a pyrometer the normal operating temps were around from memory about 750- 800c and in the red on the guage was at 900c anything above your internals will start to melt, so yeh the 900c+ would be the go.
Thanx Kiwi & Quads, will be going the 900*C route.

where abouts are you getting this done mate? and how much is it

Compettition Coatings at Granville, they quoted me $990 for the 2 headers,2 extentions,2 exhaust pipes off the turbo housing & 2 dump pipes.
Another heavy engineering company we use to rechrome/hardface suspension parts etc has given me a similar quote for cash, but I think they're using a higher temp proof coating + better quality,I'll find out more tomorrow about this one.

awesome mate, let me know

Ok,finally pulled my finger out.
This engineering shop can give us an aluminium oxide coating good for 1090*C to 1600*C,coating is 6-8 thou thick.Everything is sand blasted then pre-heated before coating added.
The best part is the more exhaust pipe sets I can supply him the cheaper it gets.
My quote was for $995,but this is a better quality & higher temp range than Comp Coatings.
Let me know if your interested Kiwi,as it will be another few weeks before I'm ready to get this done.Have to test fit this system to the car then pull it off for coating.
Jase.
