View Full Version : Wakefield Park Day -> Sept 24 -> Optional Driver Training!
TrackChat.com.au have booked Wakefield Park for Monday September 24.
It will be a fun and relaxed private day with the option of on-track driver training in your own car!
Ian Luff (http://www.ianluff.com.au/) and his crew will be on hand using their Accelerated Learning Curve (ALC) programme for high performance driving.
If you have been thinking about trying circuit for the first time, but were not sure, this is your chance. Or if you have done a few track days already, and want to take it to the next level, sign up!! There will be several instructors & we'll group drivers for experience level.
The training component is optional and will cost about $120 over the usual track fee.
If you are not interested in the training that is fine, please come along anyway.
We are taking 25 bookings for this day, with at least 10 spots already taken, please register your interest in this thread asap.

I might be up for this, are passengers allowed? Will there be timing or anyone making a DVD?
Also, if all 25 people sign up for training, is that going to be feasible? I mean, how long would you get with an instructor for your $120?
(sorry for the questions but its worth asking these things up front :-) )

I have booked the company that will do timing for us 555.
Also there will be about 25 drivers on the day, and i envisage about 15 for driver training. There will be 5 drivers per instructor (max). That means we will have between 2 and 4 instructors.
Thanks, do passengers go free? (subject to WP licence)

Just clarifying the costs Dunc ...
$120 each for the instructors ???
$90 for track and $50 is you don't have a WP licence?
Sound right?
Cheers Dave.

Dave the hire fees are approximately the same as the last private hire (which was $135) however we have lap timing now so that is +$15 per car. So the core cost is $150. You will need a Wakefield Park license ($50 if you dont already have one) alternatively you can use a CAMS or AASA lisense. All the private hire fees are on the Wakefield Park website btw.
The instructor fee is +$120 per driver.
FWIW regular open day is $100 now (+ license fees as required) however I believe a private day with 25 drivers is far superior vs an open day. Lots more potential on-track time (not restricted to 5 x 20 minute sessions for starters) you will see what i mean, it is far more flexible and safer given all cars arent trying to cram onto the track at the same time.
I have confirmed that passengers need to have a Wakefield Park license too.
Pricing is not 100%, as Wakefield Park has recently changed hands, but given i have booked and paid a deposit i expect they will honour it.
Sounds like you are well on top of things. Are we going to have all 25 cars on track at once, or split into a few groups based on speed/experience? That worked really well the last one I went too, although some people in my group were clearly taking the piss and should have been in a better group :P
Its only my second time there so you can put me in with the slow people ;)
I agree it makes sense to group drivers for experience level, especially for those new to a racetrack.
I seriously doubt we'll have 25 people on the track at any given time.
Judging by the last private day, there were hardly more than about 10 at a time, and sometimes only 3~5 cars.
(most people will go out for no more than say 10 laps and come in for a decent rest).

Yep, im up for this! Incl the training - i need the help :bravo:
Also will be keen to go down Sunday with anyone going - let me know details
I'll be heading out from Milsons point on Monday.
Anyone else is most welcome to join the cruise party down.
I plan on heading down Sunday afternoon, have a nice meal and some brews Sunday night (perhaps at the Soldiers Club or that place Kyle suggested) then collapse in a Goulburn Hotel, arise at say 7am (instead of 5am from Sydney!) and make my way to the track.
Generally we plan to be at the track around 8am for a 9am start.
Mikes manor is $70 a night I believe, and he's the closest place to stay to the track. It's the one just after the racecourse on your left after you come off the bridge...

I'm down for whatever really, I'll be 27 on the 25th of sept, so im all in for a beer or 4 on the Sunday night!!! :bravo:

This sounds like a great day especially being able to get some instruction at the same time.
Unfortunately I'm going to have to say no as myself, Oppylock and Lugenpopper will be returning from Bali just 2 days prior to the day and I'll be flat out with work when I return.
Poor us, I guess we'll have to make do with riding quad bikes through the mountains, drinking cocktails around the pool and gorging ourselves on giant prawns

It's already been to Oran Park and temperature gauge was climbing into the red within 2 laps.:flame:
Having said that, I think it would be quicker around the track than the Monaro even though it's heavier, has street tyres and standard suspension.
And using that box in manual mode is actually a blast around the track......lightning quick changes.
I'll have a chat to Sonny about a bigger intercooler and see if we can rectify or at least reduce the heat problem.

I'm hoping to get one soon!

Guys we are going to cap the driver training at 15 for the moment.
We currently have 13 expressions of interest,
that means we have two more spots available for driver training.
If there is more interest I am happy to start a reserve list (for the training) perhaps we can get another instructor if we get five more EOI.
Duncan can you put me down with training and put my brother Tony down without training i also have another cousin that will let me know tomorrow if he wants to come if any spots left he has a mustang and we all know nothing is better than overtaking a ford.:waving: :yep:

I just read the list again and it looks like drivers 16 and 17 will be sharing cars, that means we will have 24 cars, and there is room for one more, right?
Hazza
05-07-2007, 03:21 PM
Yes. Greg and Paul are sharing the same car. So if counting by cars then they would count as one.
Also I have confirmed entrant 18. Entrant 19 has confirmed pending business activities closer to the day. He probably won't know definate till 2 weeks before. Is this OK?
My 60% for driver training will have to be removed. I am not sure I can stay the whole day so don't want to rush trying to fit everything in.
Cheers.

Hazza thats fine
Btw the training will be 1-on-1 and will not go on for the whole day (for all drivers). Each instructor will train 5 drivers and thus can only spend so much time with each driver. We could possibly have your training done earlier. Just a thought.

Hmmm. Still = 25 participants?
Yep ... but = 24 cars.
I don't know ... it was discussed earlier and no one said it was wrong ... that's why I'm asking ?
Dunc ... can you make the call.
I will have to check with the track regarding the permit, and issues relating to more than 25 drivers. If we are constrained to 25 drivers then each driver will have to pay 1/25th. If we can have more (than 25) signed up drivers then maybe it is ok - we can count it as one entry (with additional driver). If we end up taking additional drivers, the driver/secondary driver pair will be constrained to using a single car only. Otherwise people could sign up (with additional driver - and adidtional car!) thus having two cars and drivers for a single entry fee (not going to happen). Anyway I will confirm asap.
For the driver training, $120 buys a single student spot (one driver) only, not two. I hope this makes sense.

Some really good news and a little heads up for everyone ... I've been speaking with Dunc re: possibly getting one of the Commodore magazines to come and cover the day and gather some pics. Well ... at this stage Street Holdens (by GXM) have indicated that they would be interested in coming along and covering the day for us. :bravo:
So fellas ... give em all a spit and polish before and (without going stupid) turn on a bit of a show perhaps.
PS Is everyone that intends to come down the night before happy to stay at the same place? I'm happy to look after arranging the accom as long as people can work out who they're going to stay with (the rooms are twin or singles)
Don't forget ... this will be the inaugural TC 500gm steak and boutique beer festivus and gathering of asshats so don't miss out.
To give everyone interested an idea ... the place we have previously stayed at is central to town and easy walk to the RSL :D plus it is well priced if somewhat dated. This is the website:
http://www.centralmotorlodge.com.au/
It's well priced and centrally located to the RSL :D. Plus off street parking for most cars.
PM me if you're interested in staying as a group and all good if people want to make their own arrangements.
Cheers Dave. :waving:

I didn't put my name down earlier as I didn't know if I would have my new gearbox in time, installed it on the weekend so it's good to go now after last track day.
Put me on the list for central motor lodge Dave :)
Good work re getting mag coverage too! I could have helped you out here, but you've already pretty much covered it, it seems :D
I'll organize one of our photographers to come down and do photos, and if you guys can do a post event write up i'll post it onto our site :)
Gents, given I am increasingly uncertain on whether I can make it, and the growing number of reserves I'm going to give up my place for somebody else who is a certainty.

Ill give it a go dave but its my first circuit day so dont expect much competion. I managed to pick up a set of very worn yokahama semi comps on some ss rims for a good price, so it might give me a bit more grip and it also means i dont destroy my road tyres.
The maloo is registered again and its in to get the intercooler made and fitted up so hopefull ill get it back by the end of the week and the exhaust guy is still finishing up the dump pipe welding and then its off to sand blasting and painting. The comes the fun part of fitting it all up and tuning:idea: .

has anyone got any worn track tyres to fit these rims(235-45-17). I would love new ones but $ are vanishing on this turbo project. Are these the tyres they use on the v8 ute series and does anybody know if they replace them after every meeting? if so might be able to pick up some half worn tyres at a good price.

If you're interested, I've got a pair (only) of Toyo RA-1 235/45/17 sitting here. They've done half a day on the fronts at Eastern Creek last year & also some runs at wsid.
:yep: The A048's were used on the V8Utes. When we got them, this batch were in fantastic condition, so you have to choose them wisely as some we left behind were plain shit.

Anyone interested in meeting for a group drive down to Glbn on the Sunday ... how does this sound?
Meet point (easiest that could be thought of): Pheasants Nest Mobil servo
Time: 3pm for 3.30pm depart.
This should leave plenty of time for us to get to the digs by 5pm and charge off for festivus at the ARRIE ...
If you have a UHF radio, bring it along as it makes keeping eveyone together a bit easier ... if not ... MEH.

Subaru Liberty RS with some mods (actually not much of the car is original anymore).
Last time I was down I snuck in a high 1:09, but have made some changes since then, so hoping to go faster, but may go slower!! :(
Everyone who has responded so far has had a holden or ford. Will there be any other Japanese or European cars to liven things up a bit. Would be good to have a quick EVO or Porsche out there to make things interesting.

Josh if you are up for training as well your total would have been $150 track + $120training = $270... assuming you paid half deposit you are up for another $135... so yes $135

Kyle and TigerSS,
I need to pull my offer of taking up a position. There's an Oran Park day for next Wednesday (which I only found out about this morning), so I'm confirmed for that one.
Anyway, I'll definitely look out for the next Track Chat day, AND REGISTER my interest early on.
Hi Guys
Great news, everyone is paid up (except one).
I spoke with the track and Luffy yesterday - all is in readiness!!
-Driver training-
We have 3 instructors for the entire day, and it looks like we may split into groups (say newbies, intermediate 1 and intermediate 2) - they are going to take us through their "accelerated learning curve" driver training program. I'm not certain of the agenda but we're sure to get some group-based lecture/training, personalised in-car tuition, and track time by yourself of course. Ian Luff will start with a driver briefing around 9am. I will prepare a schedule of events / rules and give you a handout on the morning. It's sure to be a great day.. Can't wait!!

Dave, essentially the same as a regular open day, except you are not limited to 20 minutes per hour.
You can come and go - on and off the track - as and when you please.
That's what makes these private days so good? (3x the track time)

then forget about any decent camber on the fronts, unless you have coilovers or some other non factory strut. the 245 re55's measure about 260mm wide, i think you'll be lucky to get 1* - this is the reason we run 225's on the front

Well its thursday night and my turbo'd maloo is still not finished with 3 days to go befor heading off:headbang: . The good news is that i actually drove the ute today with the turbo on it:bravo: , but only to the exhaust shop:( . after fitting it all up and starting it there was a leak on the header plate at the front exhaust port. Whats good is i have tomorow off to get it sorted with the exhaust guy and then i have to find time to tune it:shock: .
But no matter what i will be there:bravo: and also ill be joining some of you in sydney for the drive down. Sydney is actually adds a 2-3hrs on the trip from here but i wanted an excuse to join the convoy and now i have it, my sister is getting married on sat and my cousin is catching the train up form syd so they thought it would be good if i could give her a lift home on my way to wakefield, which is funny as where i was going is really 2hrs from her but i have now found the excuse.

the old Pac is an awesome road, just watch for the boys in blue. I went for a little run there a few weekends ago with all the bikes and I chopped them through the corners but they flew past me on the straights! Mind you I didnt even try as its not worth the risk. Didnt seem to bother them, those bikes must have hit more then double the speed limit on the straights

Pics tomorrow night-ish... alcohol+birthday dinner pending :D
I managed 1.20.27!! I was pretty wrapped, every time i went out i knocked a couple of seconds off :D
Motor performed flawlessley
Car handled well given stock everything
Brakes got me one lap at a time, just enough to give it a good go
Had a mofo***ing ball! Will research buying a track car ASAP!
10+ coronas the night before left me feeling a little seedy in the morning, but that cleared up quick
*Thanks* to Dunc for squeezing me in for training at the last minute!
*thanks* to the pub in Goulburn for donating me $700 :D

Pity a few those times were with instructors driving !!!
Had a ball ... learnt HEAPS (Luffy is an awesome coach) and managed a 1:15.8 in the GTS. Street tyres, tune + exhaust only, factory everything and 2 people on board. Everyone was really well behaved (thanks guys) and a HUGE thanks to Dunc for all the organisation.
Hopefully someone got some pics of me ???
Thanks guys ... had a ball.

I am utterly stuffed ... and I thought driving home after a drag day was tiring. Very worth it ... VERY !
What a day, popped the cherry, had a monumental lose ... filling the car with grass/dirt/gravel, found out how much grip $550 ebay wheels & tyres DON'T have and ... & had somewhat of a good time.:bravo:
Not exactly blisteringly fast times with a 1:18 something or other but I couldn't care less. The one lap you DO get right makes up for the other 29 you don't. The tyres got that hot that there is now an imprint of pattern on the ramps I used under the car ... IN THE TREAD ! No wonder it felt like a dog trying to run across a lino floor
Pretty happy with an 11 sec improvement across the course of the day 1:29 initially with a best of 1:18 ... pretty happy with that.
Thanks to Dunc/Luffy & Co./The cafe & WP staff and everyone for getting into the spirit of the day and helping each other out.
Why does the hume/F3 have to be soooooooooooooo boring? :headbang:
I'm off to have a COMA ... :waving:

Well... what a weekend... I had a ball...
Sunday night was entertaining... but today was great... I love the roundy roundy...
I got home a 8:30pm... somehow got to the northern beaches on the way to Cherrybrook... must have been my navigator... (Josh thank Raech for dinner! and for my present)
I can't wait to totally over analyse the times...
Good to catch up with everyone and enjoy our passion in a fun a safe manner.
Thanks for organising Dunc!

Massive thanks to Duncan for the great organisation of the day :bravo:. Ian Luff & the boys were fantastic... their hints/tips/techniques were invaluable. Well worth the cost & then some.
The car ran faultlessly all day. Previous pb was 1:10.8... new one is:

Am totally stoked with that. Unfortunately the time (and those of other drivers) doesn't appear on the natsoft timing as apparently the lady doing the timing disabled the timing every time someone took a passenger (non-instructor) in any car on the circuit (wasn't me) :headbang:. Consistent 1:10's were had. Ran out of rear tyres toward the end. And how good are the HSV/AP brakes. The bargain of the century.
I think it is the law of diminishing return from 1:10 down :headbang:.
So when are we going again? :) :)
Troy, for the record, I did 2 back-to-back 4th gear only laps: 1:12.90 & then 1:12.76. Thought you'd like that :D.

Thanks guys thats helped organise a great day:bravo: :bravo:
I had that much fun i will be doing that again, and there were some quick drivers out there.
Duncan and erik's car sound awsome down the straight:yep:
Was great meeting you guys and putting faces to names.

Thanks to all for organising another great day ( albeit one that ended a little early for me :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: ). Before something in my drivechain gave up (clutch or gearbox... not sure yet), The Escort managed a 1:16:3. Given it was its first time out to Wakefiled, and my diff ratios were still set up for Eastern Creek (I never even got to use 4th gear down the straight at Wakefield), I was stoked. Also managed to get the thing on 2 wheels a couple of times which is always fun :bravo: . It loved the top of the circuit but the little 2 litre felt like it was a mere human in the land of the giants down the straight.
Duncan, Eric, you guys are machines, and will be responsible for me spending more money on the SS :yep: . Looked like you were having a blast out there..... and whoever had that older Suburu Liberty... thumbs up. Your first few sessions were insane... great driving mate. pleasure to watch from the sidelines....
Cheers all.

That was mine!! Thanks for the comments.
Unfortunately I was ever so slightly over my personal best, and I had really hoped to beat it by a second or so. She was a bit of a handful at times, and I think this may have helped with the theatrics for onlookers. I had recently upgraded the rear brakes, and my car is so old it does not have ABS, so it was having inside rear wheel lock ups at the end of the straight. I have a few ideas for how to fix this. I had also recently upgraded the gearbox/diffs, and the new setup puts more power to the rear, so understeer is nolonger an issue at all... in fact I was enjoying some nice controllable oversteer on almost every corner exit, and some big drifts on some corners that I overcooked. I actually got a big drift coming down the hill into the fish hook in 4th at about 130kph... scary stuff, but kept it under control. Worst thing for me was my slicks were so old that they were literally falling apart. I came with six slicks in reasonable condition, and when I left I had destroyed all but 2. None of them were anywhere near worn out. They were all delaminating and falling to bits. They were Falken slicks used in the 2000 GTP season.
I think with better tyres and my braking sorted out, the old liberty should have easy 1:08s in her.
One other car worth menitoning (that has not been mentioned) was my brothers EVO9. This car started the day completely stock except DBA5000 front rotors and some racing pads. In this configuration he did a 1:12.49. Later he put on his track wheels with RE55s, and did a 1:10.15... in a totally stock car except brake upgrades (which probably made no difference to times... more for wear reasons), and tyres... stock engine, exhaust, suspension etc. I reckon if he had those tyres on earlier in the day when it was cooler he would have got a 1:09.xx. Very impressive car the EVO9.

I agree. Wes's Times were awesome and only a couple of seconds of a track prepped Evo... I really like the car... as it flew by the pit wall it sounded like a jet whoooooshing by....

Great day guys!!
Sorry I didn't get a chance to catch up with some of you, was kept busy with our project race car sorting a issue (which ended up being a 20 dollar distributor cap!!! arghhh!!). And also with my mates GTR which lost all boost after the first session of 5 laps, bugger.
Got 28 laps in with the tow car (backup race car LOL). Best lap was 2nd last of the day where RaceChrono logged a 1:11.46 (had a passenger so no NatSoft time), still almost half a second off my PB damn.
Was great catching up with Erik, Dunc and DelftCalais late in the day. Drive of the day, IMO, was Erik. 1:09 in one of our tanks is a bloody good effort, well done mate.
I'll try and post some RaceChrono data up when I work it out.

Yep great day....man I was tired last night.Big thanks to scotty for driveing an extra hour out of his way to drop me home. Thanks too,to Erik for helping me sort out my camber issues. My car is still at the track(i think) awaiting towing back to Sams, I melted a heater hose on one of the turbo pipes and couldnt get one anywhere.$200 for a backload to Sydney, which I recon is pretty good.
Takes a while to get that track sorted, but was starting to work it out a little.Did a 1.14.4 from memory. Not to bad first time on stock suspension. Will do better next time.
Would certainly be keen to do that again.Huge thanks for organiseing such a fun night and day.

lautray, 1.09 is very impressive, have you got some info on your current setup?
- Bilstein/Eibach coilovers front
- Koni yellows/Selby HD Superlows rear
- Russo H/C
- HSV/AP 4 piston f/r kit with DS2500
- RE55's
Obviously there are more, but these are the "major" ones.
well done Erik that's awesome!!!!! what did you think of the new suspension?
John, the coilovers are great on the track. Possibly still a little hard for me, but I'll get used to them. With the Koni/Selby's in the rear, seemed like a good combo to match the front. Glad the bodyroll is minimal now, after soft five year old FE2. They definietly helped with the 1:09... no more picking up the inside rear tyre out of a corner :).
I believe Dunc scored a new pb also :yep: .
