I had my car serviced today and when I was picking the car up the service manager showed me a bottle of fuel that came from my car.

I was gob smacked!!!

See below :headbang:

They didnt drain the tank due to running out of time and me needing to drive to Sydney tonight, so the filter was replaced. Im considering draining it myself now before I leave by un hooking the fuel line at the filter on the tank side and turn the key to ACC until the tank is dry.

Will see if I can be stuffed with only a few hours.

I think I will buy a large glass test tube and keep it in the boot so that now when I fill up I can test the fuel before I put it in my car.

James ... keep up with the times. Marrano's now has a Wagga franchise :slap:

Glad to hear it was isolated to the filter only Troy.

Dodgy fuel isn't only isolated to Caltex or shell. Note the thread on LS1 about some BP outlets selling normal ULP as Ultimate.

Tell ya what Troy ... I'll swap ya. :yep:

On the way home tonight, mine threw a PO332 code indicating that the knock sensors are up the blurter. Cleared the code and still there with the scan gauge showing ass tins of timing being pulled even under light acceleration. :headbang:

Sooooo tomorrow is now to be known as manifold off the car and replace day. :headbang: TPR will be in full swing and shall celebrate another repair to the pumpkin with some mechanical

Not a bad record really. Radiator cracked and replaced last Weds :headbang: , clock spring in the steering column stuff by tyre shop :flip1: and now the knock sensors :puke: .

Oh the joys of owning an aging LS1 :(

I went through this some time ago now. Seems that I was fuelling at the same servo that had rusty tanks. Over a short space of time the rusty fuel destroyed my entire fuel system. I posted a thread on LS1 about it all. In the end I learned to only fuel at newer servos that have a larger turnover of fuel. A few pics that Sonny took after dismantling my fuel system:

Dont make the mistake of thinking that dirty fuel wont get by the fuel filter. Tank was cleaned; fuel lines flushed and treated; fuel pump, filter, fuel rails, fuel hoses, and 8 injectors replaced. :headbang:

I still thank Sonny, Luke and Dave for helping me out during this ordeal...

Good luck with it Troy...

Nah, I couple of people that I heard of went to them and they just came back with "We have tested a sample and nothing is wrong on our end". So I called head office in Melbourne thinking I would get better results. After two weeks of calling I eventually got hold of the complaints manager. He said he had no logs of compliants from said servo (bullshit), and I have no reciepts as I pay mostly cash, so I have no proof. Sonny and myself emailed him the pics, parts and cost of the repairs but haven't heard from him since despite repeated phone calls and emails. I couldn't be bothered chasing the matter legally, I've just put it down to lesson learned, and haven't returned to the servo since. I now only pay with eftpos and keep every reciept, and use newr large servos...

Alot of that crap you see in the pics are a result of the rusty fuel rusting my system out from the inside and becoming flakey. :( Eventually the injectors just gave up the ghost...

We had a worst case than that couple of months ago firebug, brand new falcon practically came to a holt after refueling, the vehicle was towed to us .we fired the vehicle up and it was barely running, after a diagnositic stringe,we found that there was rust on the rails and lines + tank,we removed the tank and it was horrific as it look like a rust bath, completly damaged the fuel. system. We contacted the owner to come see for himself,he was shocked and very angry as there was over 3k damage, the fuel system needed a complete overhaul, the owner got some samples from us and immedietly reported the problem to the servo, they claimed there fuels clean, having the reciepts he took it further,as we did the job and had to be paid,so the owner paid us and persued the matter ,it took a good 7weeks and they paid for the repairs in full with an apology letter.my advice is stick to large new servo's with a high turn over as there are some shifty fuel station owners, never fill up while the tankers filling the station !

Sorry to hear about the poor fuel quality Troy, it really is a lucky dip these days. Same ole story though, these crooks want a fast buck and to hell with quality and service. As an interesting aside, I recently found out that your 98 octane fuels 'go off' after 4 - 6 weeks, reducing the potential performance of your car, so there is something else to look out for..............:headbang:

Is there any advantage in fitting one of those pretty glass cased inline fuel filters in the engine bay? It could be inspected in your weekly checks for any excessive dirt/rust. Would they hold up to the pressure from aftermarket fuel pumps...?

What if it was fitted just at the tank, before the filter outside the tank?

Would be a pain to get under the car, thinking more now...stuff it...yeah in the engine bay :yep:

my mate in the states has a large 5lt funnel with a special filter paper in it that he replaces every time he fills up.
it is 5 to 7 times finer than a fuel filter and catches everything takes twice as long to fill his cars but he swears by it.
he has sum new bm,s and a old corvet i have seen photos of the crap in it after 10 gallons  :puke:
mabe i need him to source some for us :yep:

to all the bad servos selling bad fuel :flip1:

got me thinking now...........

this site has a funnel and filter, heap of other cool stuff too if you go back to the main page..

http://www.australianauto.com.au/HTML/15_FuelSystems/15g_FuelSystems_01.htm

this one looks perfect!!!!!mmm may have to get one, not sure how well it will go with the side fill on cars at the pump.

Mr. Funnel comes with a stainless steel filter built right in. This durable filter will stop solid contaminants down to the microscopic size of .005 inches. That is five, one thousandths of an inch! If that was all the Mr. Funnel did that would be a good start. But the Mr. Funnel will separate free water from your fuel as well. As you pour your fuel through the funnel keep your eye on the sump area of the funnel. If the fuel contains free water it will collect there since water is heavier than gasoline. When you have a substantial amount of water, dispose of it and resume fueling. If the filter becomes clogged with solid contaminants, rinse it with clean fuel.

local mecury dealer has them 19 ltrs min $30

still looking what around

oh i did notice the marine/aviation ones are conductive but they come in non conductive as well. maybe harder to get non conductive ones without buying over the net. spose it doesn't matter the filler and car is metal anyway

got one today seems ok, yet to test it at the pump. but a bit of home testing, filled it with water nothing came out...drained some fuel out of the car and put it back seem to flow well, was some crap in the container that got trapped ok.

leaves a little bit of fuel in the bottom as the filter case is up by a few mm from the bottom of the funnel, guess could just dump that out when done at a pump..

i got the 10" 19 ltr/m one, seems to flow fast enough, but have to test that at the pump speed. if need a faster one next one up is 10" again but twin filters and flows 50 l/m they are about $60..but will see how we go.

here is the actual web site for the manufacturer, with a video and all
