View Full Version : Selling Modified Cars ...

I'm after some opinions from those that have sold modified cars, do you think you are better off sticking the factory stuff back on the car and then selling the aftermarket bits + pieces seperately or are you better off just selling the car as it is ???
Basically looking at the easy things to change, suspension, brakes + wheels.

haven't sold one myself ... but after seeing a mate sell/trade-in his freighttrain of a white VY SS with head/cam bigger wheels, suspension etc etc etc for market value of a stocker, i'd say put as much back to stock, then sell the bits. A slight hassle I know, but brakes move QUICK, wheels you cop a pounding on (no one appreciates good rubber but it'd be another grand in your pocket for 30 mins of effort) and suspension? what you got? i've got cash :)

ok ok
which one is going to another home.......
I've sold a couple of cars i've spent the cash on..
It's a right pain in the ass. When it comes time to sell the falcon, i will return it to stock.
Dare I ask which one youre selling? :( Not the big black one i hope :(

If you've got the standard stuff to put back on then that's what I'd do.
I never keep the standard stuff and get annoyed about it when it comes time to sell because I know there is a lot $$$$$ going down the drain.
I don't reckon there is any chance of you selling the Coupe', the GTS is still in standard form (as far as I know) and too new therefore it must be the VY.......
Are you going to tell us what's on the shopping list?:driving:

Depends on which audience you want to sell the vehicle to Nick.
If only advertising on LS1, TC, SC etc etc then leave the car as is because this is often what people in those arenas are looking for.
HOWEVER ... if smart bomb selling on places such as carsales, carpoint, drive etc ... it would probably be in your interests to return the car to as stock condition as possible.
Trading ... The worst option even if it the fastest method of sale. Dealers won't give 2 shits about what you've done to it and give you not much better than wholesale price on it. They will then capitalise on all the work you've done when it comes time to re-sell it.
In the LS1 world anyway ... parts such as susp, brakes, wheels, etc etc will be easily offloaded for good $$$ so very worthwhile removing the goodie parts if you plan to just get rid of it in a relatively short period of time.
It will be a shame to see the Coupe4 go after all the work that's gone into it but the next project will be interesting :D

Vote 1 nick to be banned from trackchat :flip1:
You're right though, all good things must come to an end at some stage in life.

Cant believe your going to sell the Coupe and buy a 4 Cylinder. I know fuel prices are bad, but geeze i didnt think they were that bad!!!! :headbang:
agree with Dave
- you might get lucky on the forums and find the right person (with a modified car)
- otherwise in the wider market, mods generally detract from your chances i reckon
- ls1 is a great place to sell parts!

Smart man that Jake ... :yep:
I was just screwing with ya guys, seemed like a good idea until the flood of phone calls, PMs and MSN messages started ... :headbang:
I AM NOT SELLING THE COUPE 4
It is looking highly likely that the SS will be going, I haven't done anything yet so all I am really wondering is should I pull stuff off it before I sell it. Seems the answer is yes. I will almost certainly have a new car fairly soon and I am in no rush to sell the VY, at this stage Medowie Speedshop (aka Tiger SS and his driveway) and myself will pull everything off one weekend and revert to fairly standard form for sale. Stuffed if I know when that will happen.
Thanks for the feedback guys ... much appreciated.

I was checking in on the website waiting for the punchline.........I wasn't buying that story.
Any clues to what you're looking at?
I can keep an eye out while I'm hunting down cars for my gf and Lugenpopper...... I get just as excited searching for other peoples cars as I do my own.......wish someone would pay me to do it as a job.
I have a clue..

that answers the question then, quite easily be able to sell one. just need to advertise to the right market...if someone wants what you have done they will buy it, could take longer than if stock, since stock is a bigger market.

Well there was charged VT GTS for sale since i bought my VXGTS 2 years ago. I think it must of only just sold cos its now off the market. Im guessing it is harder to sell highly modified cars as it broadens your captive market. I havnt officially put my GTS up for sale yet, but will be doing so soon to make way for a house.
Good luck with it all anyways.

Whats moddified on the SS?
Where do I start ...
Full 2.5" DF exhaust (including extractors)
VZ Leather interior
VX GTS 19" Wheels
AP Racing HSV Brakes
Bilstein / Eibach Suspension
Textralia Clutch
GM Ripshift
Power Steering Cooler
Medowie Speedshop Catch Can
Medowie Speedshop Ported & Polished TB

My only thing to add in here is that people see "Modified" in the advertisement, and instantly think "THRASHED"
IMHO i would go back or as close to stock as possible....

With the SS, I would pull everything off and sell it as stock. That is what i did with my VX SS except I traded it. So easy compared to selling my heavily modified Senator, very rare car and took 8 months to sell and still didn't get anywhere near what I wanted for it. I took a hit of nearly $10k on what i wanted initially and sold for $4k below the stock cars value and it had ultra low kms for it's age :headbang:

Nick, how much will you sell it for? How many K's? cos i'll be looking to get into a VX SS or VY SS after i sell the GTS. Unless you want to do a deal ;)

PM sent ... :waving:
I say it depends on what modifications you've got.
When I sell my Calais, I'll sell the CAI, brakes and rims (and rubber if there's a lot left) separately, but I'm not going to bother removing the exhaust, diff gears or putting the tune back to stock.
Seedy's right - brakes sell quick, rubber doesn't get appreciated when sold with rims, but other bits might be more trouble than they're worth.
There's also the consideration that someone on LS1 or similar may be looking for exactly what you've got, and may make it worth your while to keep the car as-is. Unlikely, but you never know.
Cheers,
- Febs.

Nick - I know where you live dude. If for any reason you even think of selling the Coupe4 i will hunt you down and beat you to a pulp. That car is everything i'd love to do if my missus didn't have my balls in a vice !! :waving:
Secondly, if it comes to the crunch let me know. My SS could use a brake upgrade... :yep:

Picked it up today, I'll get some pics up when I have a minute. Have some pretty cool custom plates for it too.

Silver ... it could well spend a bit of time outside so I went for the safe colour.
We have a 3 car garage but I am yet to condense the crap enough to fit the 3rd car in ... now I have this one I will have to try harder !!!
:D
Personally, I think you made the better choice mate...
If you had to buy blue, you would have got the 5.4L and you would have been dissapointed im afraid!
Well chosen. For me, the interior fitout on the new ss+hsv's is far far beyond anything ford has on offer at the moment!
Congrats on the purchase Nick!
Has the SS gone to a good home yet?
Cheers,
- Febs.
