View Full Version : Porting the standard TB

I have been considering getting an aftermarket Throttle Body for ages but it has been suggested to me I can get good results from porting the stock unit as my 04 Monaro is only a bolt on car. Is it worth doing? How do I go about getting it done and what sort of money should I expect to pay? Are there any downsides to doing this mod?
Also when I add a small cam latter on will I need to update to an aftermarket unit?
Sorry for the newbie style questions! Thanks
Mate as you know I sold my TBA that I bought off Dale as I was 1. Unhappy how it made my car idle and 2. It was only 3 or 4mm wider and for the $$$ I thought "nah".
I have had a standard P and P one that Terry "Utetester" did and it got me good results on the dyno. Cant remember how many KWs but it was more then 5.
These P and P units are available on eBay for $150 and are shmick as fark!!
Nick knows who does them, I think?!
IMHO I would go that way and not the after market $700 chunk of Billet aluminium.
Good luck and keep us posted on how you go with it all.

Daniel,
There's a fella on LS1 named DUS ... he sells one of the tidiest ported TB for an LS1 I have seen. He sells on Ebay and does them for $150 exchange or $250 outright..
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250120702544
I have one fitted to mine and they look and perform great.
I tried an SS inductions 78mm TB once and it made the idle funky but have had no issues at all with this one.
If you can get a TB for a bargain then give it a try but the ported ones are good and better value for money.

Ditto I had one od Dus's on my 346, cost was about $150 and well worth it given the work he put into it. Give one of those a try Daniel.

yep i have one of Dus's TB gives a noticeable power increase
very good for the price
he uses a milling machine to do these so they are ported evenly not like some of the other who do it buy hand

i had a ported/polished TB on the ss b4 the new TBA item, it did give a noticeable gain over the stock unit, although i dont think as much in the end as the tba. But not every mod is just about the numbers.

Dont waist your money on an aftermarket job unless your going for major mods. I have tried a few of them & found the ported TB just as good as any with no idle issues. Its all you need unless your going heads & cam.

OMG Terry  are you lost?
 Nice to see you again. :waving:
To add to the above comments ... if bigger T/B are a something people believe in ... why don't the turbo cars usually run them?
Honest question. Is it something that is effected by altitude and barometric pressure? :D

A fantastic response guys, Thanks. I will look straight into this ported throttle body option.
I love this site :bravo:
Cheers!

With turbo cars you have positive pressure shoving air into your engine. The 0.01 PSI pressure drop differece between std and ported T/B... who gives a rats... just wind the boost up a bit! (but it matters in an atmo engine)
Oh, and g'day Terry. Long time no see?
No worries Dan, keep us posted on how you go with it and Hi Terry, glad to see you posting after a lot of looking :D :whip:

One issue i have seen is bent shafts on stock (ported) TB's with FI. Not seen the issue at all with the TBA ones. The way they are ported and 1/2 the shaft removed causes a week point that you should be aware of. Bent shaft = sticky TB. I havent seen the problem with unmodded stock TB's

Aftermarket throttle bodys especially on a bolt on car are extremely poor bang for buck imho...right up there with aftermarket cats.
My suggestion would be saving the 400-800 dollars and getting a cam that much earlier...at least you'll feel the difference.
If you've done everything else and you're chasing that very last poofteenth of a tenth then go for it otherwise save the dosh.
Having said that i love the look of the snake & TBA ones, good bling factor!

Makes sense ... thanks Al :bravo:
To eliviate any concern about Dus's ported TB and the potential for bent shafts ... The throttle shaft is completely intact thus presumably no weak point.
The neck of the LS1/LS6 manifold is 78mm or 74mm?

Aftermarket cats I dont class as a waste. I'd recommend doing them with the exhaust and before the tune. Stock cats are pretty restricted. Aftermarket or ported TB's on stockers are for bling only IMO, you need a cam at the very least and preferably heads too but only if you have the LS6 or better manifold. As with any mods you remove restrictions to add power or utilise it better. If there is no restriction there is no point in upgrading the componant until it becomes one.

I have a Rebel SS ported & polished t/b & have had no real problems either. Full shaft also, not filed down.

Another suggestion would be dont waist your money on toy mods. Just save up for a turbo kit. :yep:

High flow metal cats are very worthwhile in some applications, less so in others, eg bolt on std cube; waste of money, turbo car; very worthwhile. Supercharged and big cube H/C, toward the worthwhile end, std cube small cam less worthwhile, but as you're likely to do a new zorst, may as well do the cats at the same time. The metal cats are much less prone to failure and the more we mod our cars the more susceptible to damage the cats become.
Some good info/opinions on here, wish I had discovered V8/LS1 type car forumsm before I spent my money on my SS.

On the weekend Dus kindly fitted up one of his ported throttle bodies to my Monaro and apart from being a nice looking bit of kit I can actually feel a difference with my car. I only drove the car for about an hour on the way home and wasnt really expecting much from this mod especially as my car is still stock except for the exhaust but throttle response is much better and it feels more powerful in the lower rev range. Well worth the money imo.
Dus was a great bloke to deal with to and more then happy to talk LS1s. Thanks for the tip guys!

How did it go.Any report?
Yeah any reports, Dus does a shmick PP job on them, mine is not a Dus but a Utetester and it gave me gains that I could feeling through driving.

Yet to go for a real blast at WOT. I'm not expecting to notice too much difference. Just looking for a little more at the strip for next time I get there.
Fitted up no problems.Idle is fine. (as I swapped butterfly, Idle hole in blade was enlarged when cam was fitted years ago)
The PP job by Dus is quality. Also the full throttle stop is ground back to allow a complete open of the butterfly.
Tip for new players, you need a set of torx bits to swap everything.
(Lucky the stepson had his tools at home with a complete set :bravo: )
This is my last "go-faster" bolt on mod.
Time to move onto suspension and join the boys at Wakefield.:yep:

I noticed better throttle response, interested to see if I was imagining things.

Good point, I had to go out and buy a set to fit mine.

Will be good to see some more PPL out on the circuit!!
