Hi all,

I've heard some talk of GPS race timers that allow to to time sectors as well as laps - any recommendations of reasonably priced units available here?

How accurate do you want it and how much $$$ you want to spend?

They range from simplest of a consumer GPS module ($65 bucks) linked to a smartphone (what I used yesterday at Wakefield) all the way up to a $1000 unit which has three accelerometers plus the GPS signal to make it much more accurate.

I will try and find some links for you. If you google for "GPS data logger" and "GPS lap timer" you should find alot of stuff.

This is the gps one linked to the smartphone: http://www.racechrono.com/?lang=en

Hazza, how did you find it? I'm thinking of giving one a go next season. I've already got the smart phone and figure you can't beat that for the money. (If it works well)

I tried to sut up a bluetooth GPS to my Treo 750 and running www.gps-laptimer.de unfortunately I just couldn't get the gps data ... the phone picked up the bluetooth.. but never got anything...

I will keep trying...

Yeah it was quite good. I had the receiver in my centre console as I wasn't organised so didnt have velco etc to mount it up on the windscreen, but it still did really well. With good signal (8 satellites which is the norm anywhere I have used my GPS in open environments) the accuracy is around 0.2. If you get one of the newer 5hz ones it is better than 0.1 accurate and the plots around the track would be less jaggy as it updates 5 times a second rather than once like with the normal 1hz ones. Can't beat it for bang for buck ($65 bucks all up as the phone is free on plan). It obviously won't out do a proper one like the driftbox or the more expensive ones with accelerometers + gps but good enough for me. It also got live timing, so you can keep an eye on your current lap/splits as your racing (very handy for regularity if I can sneak it in LOL).

I am about to get the raw GPS data off from my 28ish laps, so I will post it up.

WOW!! Its bigggggg.. and not very readable. I think I am going to need to find some sort of converter for it. Within the software it translates nicely to laptimes and speeds etc.. but the raw file.. hmm. It doesnt help that google earth has such a crappy resolution for wakefield.. yuck!!

What you might need to do is get a relatively accurate map of the track with a known co-ordinate and then overlay the info.

Yes good idea Scotty. I will see what I can come up with. I might take a few screenshots of my phone to show some of the inbuilt analyzing stuff.
