View Full Version : Flipping tyres on rims

My front RE55's are a little tired on the outer shoulder. Obviously there is a preferred direction of rotation marked on the tyre (for water dispersion I presume) and a Left & Right on each sidewall. Can I flip the tyre on the rim "permanently" so they run backwards & don't punish the worn shoulder as much ie inside to outside? I have used RE55's backwards previously but not flipped on rim... I swapped left to right & vice versa at Wakefield on Monday & it got me the 1:09 :D. But that was for tyre preservation only. No adverse tyre feedback felt whilst driving. Would there be any long term effects?

Pretty sure the rotation is solely for water dispersion ... so I don't reckon it would matter at all.
But I wouldn't take my word for it ...

Agreed ... I also believe this is the point of rotation marking.
Whilst not quite the same but I've accidently run rotational road tyres backwards on the wrong side and experieced no ill effects, I would presume the same for circuit oriented tyres. Once again, this was in the dry only. :headbang:
If in doubt go left front tyre to right front rim and vice versa ... this would move the outer edge to the inner edge on opposing side and wouldn't effect rotation at all. Only hassle is it obviously requires a tyre machine to strip and refit.
I got nothin ... weeeeeeeeeeeee :woot:

I agree with the above points, but I'd also be a little more careful with carefully looking over the tyres after each session checking for signs of unusual wear.
Raises another point however - with these 'sticky' tyres, you want/need to run more neg camber, which is difficult on your every day car... so... get a track car! :)
I know people that swear the tyres actually work better when you run them "backwards" ;) Should be no problem as long as you are not driving on a wet track!
