View Full Version : Zaaaaap!!
I recently acquired a VZ Wagon for CBD duties, and to haul the kids bikes around etc etc.
Anyway the friggin thing gives me a electric shock every time i get out! Now i have owned several VT~VZ cars and none of them have ever done this to me. WTF is going on? Personally i think it is the cheesy synthetic "velour" covered seats (which i havent had before).
I have put a stop to this, it's bloody stupid
Please let me know if you have ideas!

How about one of those earthing straps that touch the ground ear the rear bar Dunc?...im sure supercheap or the like will carry them.
Does this mean you can put a decent sized stick in the Monaro now?...throw that "cbd special" feotus cam in the bin where it belongs!:stick: :)

Rick i'll try it if it works
and yes i think we might be going a tad more agressive with the munro setup
If that doesnt work or you dont want a daggy looking strapping hanging off the car just do what I had to do for years in my VT, that being when you get out tap the out side of the car with a knuckle and it doesnt hurt at all :lmao:

The timing of this thread is quite ironic. I cant give you an answer but I have a VT Wagon and I had to take the rear seat out and adjust one of the seatbelt anchor bolts on the weekend. Every since then I get zapped when getting out the car. Big ones to. I will need to redo what I did and see if I can change something. Maybe it is a ground of some type? If I find the issue I will let you know.

So Dunc ... how long until the wagon is towing the Monaro to the track ???

I'd rather keep the munro on the road, but.. i might consider a car trailer for track days sometime in the distant future. If only for "insurance". I dont think the wagon could tow that much though.

Hammer in an earth spike every time you hop out?
Can't help sorry Dunc, but the Charger I'm driving over here is doing the same thing, and it doesn't have velour seats...
Every time I step out, it sounds like I've dropped something on the ground, the shocks are that loud/strong! I usually get them on my calf (wearing shorts), on the side skirt.
Bloody annoying, but I'm swapping the stupid car in a few days. It sucks (for a variety of reasons).
Cheers,

I cop the same thing from the vy.
When i go to open the letterbox at night you can see the arc.
Even when i go to open the door at 7/11 servo.
I do the Bomi thing.Back of the hand first.
Ok this might sound odd but I loosened and re-tightened the battery terminals, and now the zaps have stopped.
Is it possible the lead wasn't grounded properly? I would have thought it was grounded or not.

I was copping it yesterday everytime I got in and out of the car
Stupid as this sounds, perhaps the warmer weather isnt helping either because Ive never been shocked and all of a sudden it happened 4 or 5 times in one day?

Yeah definitely, hot/dry weather usually makes it worse.

I wasnt sure if its just me thinking stoopidly or not, it seems to be the only logical reason I can think of ... unless the car has it in for me :whip:

You are experiencing the old "Static Electricity" zapper trick (99).
The battery terminal shouldn't be able to make a difference.
It's your clothes sliding across the cloth seat as you get in, charging you up.(so should be impossible with leather seats)
I remember years ago in an office I worked in with a nylon mix in the carpet, you could scuff your feet across the carpet, walk behind someone and point your finger behind them and you could get a 1 cm nice blue zap to the back of their neck, bloody near blowing them out of the chair, a way not to win friends but certainly influence enemies.
I remember this issue well from my mechanic days with cars.
My VXSS used to do it.
If when you step out you hold the door at the rear end, on the metal, put one foot on the ground then get out you should be able to earth your self before you get out, if you don't then when you're out you go to push the door shut and you shift your hand from the insulated door trim to the metal car, you earth it and zap.
The only thing wrong with the above method is you usually forget when you're a bit under the weather, acts as a real "wake me up" :yep:
The earthing strap (that hangs down and touches the ground when you stop) usually work very well.
It's all explained here (http://www.sciencemadesimple.com/static.html)

If it is the fabric on the seats then perhaps seat covers would fix it. Would look pretty tacky though.
