Based on the rally concept... I expect that is where they have focused their attention... to keep with the line up of hot hatches ....

It looks like shit!
Actually it looks like a board of nobs each had their own part to design, and it's still shit.
I bet it goes awsome though!!

Disappointed ... looks like a Mazda 3 wannabe. Subaru has always struggled to make attractive cars, some of the more recent Liberty models are the only exception IMO ... but that's just ordinary.
Wouldn't care if it did a '10 around Wakefield stock ... it's still ugly.

Actually it doesnt drive all that well, but having said that, it wasn't too bad either. It is very refined and comfortable, but when you push it, it ultimately ends in understeer as per all WRX's (not STi's). The tyres are too narrow (205's all round on 17's) which does nothing to improve front end grip. It's quicker than it feels to drive - probably because Subaru designed the 'boyracer' out of it. The gearshift is awful - akin to a spoon in a bowl of porridge, but I think they hit their target market well with this model - subtle looks, day to day practicality but with enough performance and handling capability to keep the performance oriented family man happy. Would I buy one? As a daily - absolutely! As a performance/track oriented second car - nope, the car is too soft.I give it about a 6.5 - 7 out of 10.

BTW, I think it looks much better in the flesh - and WR Blue is definitely the colour of choice!!

If you have to make a judgement as to if it looks ok to buy one in the flesh, then it's not ok.
Subaru have had a very poor attempt at what was once an menacing looking car (early model STI's).
I would compare this to Ford and their amazingly designed and benchmarked Ford Taurus. Out of left field with no previous design cues...kind of like the cars from Korea.
As you can see it pisses me off when car companies try and please everyone....it's a WRX, it's not meant to be a family wagon.

I saw one of these chasing a Porsche down the Pacific Hwy, the Porsche won :) I have also already seen a modified version that seemed pretty cool. I cant say they look fantastic but then not many of the smaller Japanese hot hatches appeal to me. I prefer the VW Golf and Peugeot's. Heck even the euro small Fords look more appealing.
Still the STI I have seen photos off looks pretty flash. Runs 12s stock to apparently. I thought that was damn impressive but the new GTR is supposed to run 11.7 over the quarter and 3.5 for 0-100 sprint!

Are you sure it was one of these you seen on the Pacific H'way?
They don't debut until next week at the Tokyo Motorshow and it sounds as though Australia is the bottom of the list for importing them (2009).

2009 but that article posted suggests Nissan Australia wants it before then. Faster then a Porsche 911 Turbo going on those figures. You wont get much that will be faster on the street. Except maybe your coupe 4 :)
I cant get over how fast it will be for a production car. You still cant buy a factory Holden/HSV that makes it into the 12s for the quarter or mid 4s for the 0-100. Then you look at the figures this GTR is supposed to run! Truly a Godzilla :yep:

And this:
TOKYO (AP) -- Nissan's new super-sports car, the GT-R, is a rare challenge to European and American automakers by a Japanese company more used to family friendly offerings like the Altima sedan.
Nissan claims the muscle car, to be introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show opening next week, is so sophisticated it is training scores of maintenance workers at dealers in Japan to service the vehicle.
"The GT-R requires special attention because its technology is so advanced," Corporate Vice President Takao Katagiri said Wednesday. "It also calls for finesse in salesmanship because the sales representative must deal with customers who are going to be very demanding."
Nissan is setting up 160 showrooms called "high-performance centers" around the country for maintenance work on the GT-R.
Similar back-up support for the GT-R is being considered for the U.S., where the sale will follow the Japan debut, but details aren't decided. The service will be offered at American Nissan, not Infiniti luxury, showrooms.
BMW and Porsche sports cars need special care for their revved up, delicate engines, but such dealers are prepared for high-quality maintenance.
Anticipation is high among car fans for the 7.8 million yen (US$67,000; €47,000) Nissan GT-R, although Nissan has given scant specifics. The company has not given a U.S. price yet, but the vehicle is being promised to come under US$80,000.
Nissan already sells other sporty models, including the Z sports car, but it costs a third of the GT-R, which is billed as more powerful.
Nissan has set up a Web page with a countdown clock until the launch to hype the car. GT-R won't be promoted in Japan with any TV ads, which Nissan says are only effective for mass market models.
The model will be on show at the Tokyo auto show, which opens to the public Oct. 27. The event also displays many futuristic "concept" models that aren't for sale.
Analysts say that high-end sports cars aren't expected to sell in numbers, especially after the hype wears off, but they are critical for a manufacturer's image, not a practical moneymaking endeavor.
"Obviously, the size of the market is very, very small," said Credit Suisse Japan auto analyst Koji Endo. "It's really an image issue."
Japanese rival Toyota Motor Corp. is also strengthening its sports car lineup, and recently showed the Lexus IS F, which goes on sale in Japan in December, and early next year elsewhere.
Sports cars come with some risks.
Nissan officials said they were worried about possible social ills - citing safety and noise concerns - from how people might use or modify such a powerful car.
"We feel a social responsibility," said Nissan marketing director Yoshimitsu Kaji. "We must deliver on maintenance so everything is safe and legal."

Ahhh, that makes a lot more sense, sorry.
I forgot it was a WRX thread, IMO - Crap, I've seen a couple on the road now and I think those pizza cutter wheels combined with a body that belongs on a Kia is ridiculous.
I'm actually a fan of ugly cars, previous Wrx's, Cayenne's etc..... but the new Subie isn't just ugly it's altogether WRONG.
I want one of those wrx 's i love it.
As for the skyline i will never afford one but i can dream.

After seeing it in the flesh yesterday at the Motorshow, it still doesn't excite me like the old ones... The new evoX is much better, though they needed to pump the guards a bit more... everyone seems to be refining their track spec cars.... to be more of a road car... to me that makes them lose some of their appeal...

The scary thing is the Hyundia is the better looking car.
The new WRX is an example of a classic car ruined by the push to score sales in North America. Huge front/rear overhangs, narrow upright style hatch with narrow tyres and designs from every popular selling car in this segment.
Its no longer the bulging little boxer that earned its reputation as one of the best road/rally cars ever.
I had the new model launch off from the light beside me yesterday, sounded like a cross between a sewing machine and a hairdryer. Did get off the line quick but looked like shite :puke:
The new Evo..... thats a different story, from early reports this will be a supercar slayer.

A good mate just picked up his new white WRX a couple of weeks ago just after they were launched. I haven't driven it, but been in it a few times. Doesn't look too bad, but nothing like the older ricey style WRX's. Very quiet inside engine and exhaust wise (bit of tyre noise though), you should see the size of the muffler under the rear bumper!
I haven't been in it when he's given it a flogging as he was running it in (tried to tell him to get into it), but the mid range is pretty good. Of course it's nothing like the grunt of a V8, and I can't begin to compare it to a stock LS1 as I haven't been in one for years. Will go for a spin soon when he's getting into it as he has now finished his "run-in" procedure according to the Subaru manual.
Nice car, he loves it, but not my cup of tea. Oh yeah, just after he bought it he was going to drive it to Brisbane and return from Canberra on the family trip, but he couldn't fit his wife, 2 kids and the luggage in the car so he took his Forrester instead.

Not to mention the overall cheap and tinny feel of the thing, it was heaps of fun though.

I've seen a few of the new wrx's around and imo they don't look any better in the flesh than in a photo.
I must be the only person who doesn't like the look of the GTR. The rear shot looks good but the front doesn't do anything for me. Not that i'm in a financial position to care about it anyway :waving:

You're not the only person who doesnt like the styling of the GTR. I might get used to it though. It looks huge too? Performance would be more important to me though. Also had a close look a the wrex and evo at the motorshew too, and the low dna base these cars come from is extremely ordinary to say the least. But like commodores, what makes them exciting isnt so much the base model powertrain or styling.

We've now had 4 people put a deposit down for the GTR in the last week at the dealership I work for, 2 of those I have sold myself. Lots of different pricing being thrown around at the moment, so far we expecting it to be around the $150k mark to be on the safe side.
One of the deposits was by an owner who bought the original R32 GTR new from us and still owns the car.
The new one will be an awesome car when it arrives, at this stage we are being told early 2009.
