No worries Eric. Maybe next year.
Anyone else considering coming along. It will be a huge day, and there are product and cash prizes for class winners. We are looking for some "well powered" N/A or F/I Commodores/Falcons.
I would like to drive over and have a run, just for fun.
Will see what I can do.
Will be good to catch up again John :yep:

Hazza with these classes (5.7 and 6l) does that mean that strokers are in the "other" class?
Hazza
30-10-2007, 06:40 PM
No. Strokers will compete in the 6l open class N/A ($500 prize money). It should really be called 6l+ open class N/A.

I just decided it wasn't my thing. I'm a naturally aspirated fan, give me a stroker any day :) The whipples make great power/torque at low rpm, but they can be a bit inconsistent in the heat and coming up to a very hot Canberra summer it would only get worse.
Never had 1 problem with it, no belts come off, nothing.
The cam I have now has a nice lope to it and has made between 296 - 315 rwkw depending on dyno and it's in the 220's custom Sonny grind. The heads probably don't help it at all - in fact it's probably gone backwards if anything (versus the L76 heads) with them but they were very cheap and mega $$$ Higgins heads so I thought I'd give them a try.

Ahhh makes sense now!
I recall living in Canberra with my R32 GT-R and yes warm summers in Canberra and F/I Vehicles are certainly not a match made in heaven, far from it..
Do you miss the Whipple setup? I must admit im a cube fan as well, but each to there own..
Good Luck on the day mate.

Big day today with a good turnout, I'll let Hazza write up a full report + pics...
Some of the standouts in my mind that I saw:-
fastback 427 mustang - 400rwkw
insideout ute - sams 383 stroker - 410rwkw (with a lean/poor tune?) takes out the N/A for the day
Kits drag car getting started - damn that is clean & loud - good luck next w/e
Hazza's bolt-on - does amazing numbers (again) for a bolt on
Oscar - 380rwkw from an old school 351 XY(?) (unsure of mods)
Didn't see this run , ms700 - XC Supercharged - 8 cylinder F/I , 580rwkw+ (I think)
The gentech dyno - usual moans from those that didn't get as big a number,
yet readings seemed to be slightly up on the day.
Well done to the Gentech team!

Yeah thanks Ian.
Here's a quick post with results. I will post some pics in the next day or two.
First of all a big thanks to all the entrants today, you have helped make this the biggest and best National Shootout/GenTech Dyno day ever!!
Here is a quick list of results (marked in Bold and with a * are class winners):
A big congratulations to MS700 for taking out the day and winning the $1000 aswell as a set of Difilippo Headers. He has very generously donated the winnings to Cancer Research Charity. Good stuff mate.
Also a big congrats to Alex for taking out the 8 cylinder N/A open class and probably will be the 8 cylinder N/A National Shootout Champion.

Also another big thanks to our sponsors who made the money and product prizes a reality.

Thanks to the Ball Boy from 104.7 for doing a great job of MC for us, and also to Chic Henry for donating the Summernats Tickets for the winners and joining us for the day and also Jason Gray for coming from Sydney to join us and take some snaps for Street Holden magazine.

insideout ute - sams 383 stroker - 410rwkw (with a lean/poor tune?) takes out the N/A for the day
A lean / poor tune ?? really ??? is this your opinion of someone elses ?
I actually saw it prepped on Sam's dyno prior to coming down for the day, there was nothing I could see wrong with the tune or the AFR's.
Considering the quality of the cars that were on site, and it ran 3rd to 2 supercharger engines and absolutely SMACKED a few twin turbos and other supercharged setups, I would dare to say it performed adequatley for a N/A setup.
And I would have had a few $$ on Duncan's N/A set up getting a prize if he had managed to attend too.

He's probably referring to the gallons of smoke it blows.

If its blowing black smoke , it is rich and rich is a safe tune not a poor tune . Any tuner would be wise to let an engine go rich buring the last 1000 - 500 rpm for safety .

Animal,
Can i ask what the inlet manifold is on this beast?
I dont think i have seen one similar to this before.. And id be bloody stoked with that donk in my SS!!

Hi Paul,
Sam designes these one's himself. The throttle bodies are purchased separatley and Sam outsources the building of the manifolds then assembles it in his workshop. He has a few different trumpet lengths depending upon the application. He also purchases the basic manifold found on Darren's dutton car and kits them up as well.
Some guys like the trumpets popping out of the bonnet, some like them neatly tucked away. Sam set up a similar set-up on a 8 sec FJ ute.
If its blowing black smoke , it is rich and rich is a safe tune not a poor tune . Any tuner would be wise to let an engine go rich buring the last 1000 - 500 rpm for safety .
And sadly some people fail to understand the necessary precautions that must be taken prior to doing a tune for some dedicated Dyno runs.
It wasn't a mistake that the ute turned up and performed like it did.
Alex spent a fair bit of time with Sam geting the setup and output he wanted.
If it was a lean / poor tune like some of the genuis's hear would like to beleive, an experienced dyno operator would have noticed the pinging from the engine and aborted the run and sent the car home.
Personally, I would rather see Alex congradulated for spending the time and money to get his ute to the level it is now. And remember - he not only won, he beat a similiar stroker by over 100 rwkw :teach:
I think all it may have been Ken is a POOR choice of words.
Either way a great effort from a NA car.

There was only 1 other stroker at the dyno day, and it made 345 rwkw, so that makes it 65 rwkw, not over 100.

There was concern on the day for the AFR's when it dynoed.
I was standing next to Scott (a tuner) from Melbourne/Chiptorque and he was concerned about the AFRs.
Fact - the owner Alex was asked after the first run whether to dyno run it again.
Fact - only two dyno runs were performed on the day. It had beaten all other N/A's anyhow.
It is an outstanding engine and achievement, from a great engine builder.
Also the car didn't appear to have any issues with smoke on the day.

I will comment here and echo bluess57's words.
This is an exceptional engine by Sam and there is no doubting that. Ken you have nothing to worry about.
Yes on the day it ran a bit lean, something to do with atmospheric conditions between Sydney and Canberra maybe. From what I saw, the smoke/oil issues from the qualifier were gone and there were no smoke/oil issues with it.
Due to it running lean Alex was asked whether he wanted to run a second run, at that stage I don't think pinging was evident. It ran another run with similar AFR's, and there was no need for a third run.

Something that some tuners and a fair amount of guys with performance cars fail to understand is that AFR's are not the be all to end all. O2 sensors are not really that accurate. They can be bolted in near the cats, or stuck up the tail pipe. Both are acceptable and data from both vary slightly.
However, there are more accurate ways of tuning an engine. Some which Sam reverts to when building engines of this calibre.
Watching an AFR line on a screen is really pretty, though it is just a guide. I don't think atmospheric conditions are a factor though.
If this does seem a little off centre, perhaps a few of you could ask Todd from Mainline what the most accurate technique is to tune a high performance engine.

Could be true Troy, many people on forums could choose their words better.
It appears from the later responses that this is not the case though :(
I tend to take them as they are presented, as people take mine. I hope my previous post explains why the AFR's appear to be lean. Sam didn't tune Alex's ute using the AFR's. They are not accurate enough for him with cars at this level of performance.

p.s It has a lot to do with metering the fuel going in rather than reading the gasses coming out :yep:

Ken ... considering the rubbish that came out of Sam's mob when my car was being built I would have thought you'd have a thicker skin. I know those comments didn't come from you, (you have always been a top bloke and I appreciate that) but there certainly wasn't anything from you telling them to keep their mouths shut either. Don't get so defensive mate, you can't tell guys here how to post when Sam's boys don't follow the same rules on LS1.
:yep:
There is no doubt Sam's stroker was the stand out N/A engine on the day. Let's just leave it at that.

I'm sorry you feel that way Nick, I purposely kept out of your episode because I didn't know to much about either you ar your car. I have had nothing to say but praise for you building what you have in your garage. Even today I still think what you have done is a giant step out of the normal box.
And I really think your drawing a pretty long bow asking me to tell the guys to keep quite. ( damed if I do - damed if I don't, you must have been paying attentions to a few females lately :p )
As for the setup, sometimes it is hard to educate those that have their minds already set. I tend to get annoyed ( rather then defensive ) when people make comments when they have a basic grasp only of a situation. Something like me telling you I am able to obtain a tax benefit from my owner occupied home because the guy I was standing next to at a car show said he can against his.
Would you educate me a little better or leave me to beleive that this is true ?
For those that do want to learn a little more about tuning, as I mentioned before, ask questions to and find out ( and some could learn to choose your words a little better )

Regardless of all that it looks like a good day was had by all with some good results . I noticed from the pics the cars were ran with the bonnets up ? I was at a recent dyno day in Sydney where a Dyno Dynamics guy was running the day (Nizpro at BTA) and we all were dynoed with bonnets down , does this make a difference ?
How lean is lean ? My car on the above mentioned dyno day came up lean as (no pinging) but as tuned it is definately not the case , some of these dyno afr readings are way off I'm afraid .Different tuners , different methods .

Are you implying VYMaloo is the only one saying there is nothing wrong with the tune? As well as VYMaloo, there are a few others in this thread that have not questioned the tune, one stand out being the people that ran the car up, us. That's the exact reason the car wasn't sent home after one run. Pinging wasn't evident in the first run so although it was quite lean it was judged that it was probably ok.
But you can surely understand that the AFR (and listening for pinging) is the only way to tell how a car is running during a dyno comp. And as sheepstations weren't on offer, there is no way we were ever going to risk destroying the engine. Hence why Alex was consulted and only two runs were performed.
PS - For the record the snipped quote looks like VYMaloo was saying his car came up lean at our dyno day, when he was actually talking about a different dyno day and different dyno.

I didn't imply anything of the sort, you really need to learn to read and comprehend it before pasting dribble like that.
Here is the whole post for you to re-read without the snip

His car also showed a lean AFR reading on a different dyno, and he knew his tune was ok .... does that help you Hazza ???
Surely AFR and listening for pinging is the ONLY way ???
So the dyno operator with a keyboard on his lap and access to a stack of tables ( and composite graphs ) with the touch of a key is ONLY going to look at the AFR graph and now listen for pinging because you think that that is the only way.
Whatever :waving:

Mate its just a friendly discussion on a forum, no need to get hyped up.
It seemed like you were saying we were in the wrong. If not, no dramas. Take a chill.
And regarding the quoted snip (no problem with my reading) I was just making it clear VYMaloo's comments were regarding a different dyno as the bit where he stated that was omitted from the snip. Again no biggie.
Hm interesting. So during the dyno pull at a dyno day, you expect the operator to have the keyboard on his lap looking at tables? Not to mention having to hook up and log it, during a day that we need to run 50 cars. I think not. The AFR and pinging is the only feasible way during a run. In any case he had already won, so we weren't going to risk anything.

Great to see nothing has changed since I have been away. Looks like a great day was had by all. Good to see Alex's car did so well on such a crap tune. Imagine what it could have done on one of these so called good tunes:) (as far as the tune, the initial tune was done on an engine dyno using 8 lambda sensors as well as as some other tricky way that is way too technical for me to explain. It does not get any more accurate than this. An AFR sensor is fine for everyday application and credit to the guys at gentech for asking the question of the owner if he wanted to run it again. From what I hear that car spends plenty of time on the limiter and hasnt let go yet.
Best car I reckon was the xy with the blower. May not have made the most power but nothing beat the look and sound of an old skool 671.

Good result for your car and greeat to see you happy with it. Shame to see you lose a bit of power going from the standard L76 heads to a set of big $ heads. I guess that is why many people are now using CNC heads. They are always a lot more accurate than handporting. You would pay a zillion to get the same quality hand ported heads as a set of reasonable CNC'd ones. Anyway good result.

One more time ... wasn't talking about you Darren ... I thought I made that clear on LS1 ?
I can't remember who the guys stirring shit up where, don't really care to be honest. I don't recall you ever making direct attacks at Sonny or his abilities, other guys did, they are the guys I am talking about. As for the shit stopping ... that's crap and you know it. It stopped on the forum but it never stopped in the back ground, I have been accused of lying about the weight, using race fuel, running higher boost than claimed, having a "special tune" etc. etc. etc. This was all in the last few months after the drag day.
It never stops mate, and you know that. It may not be in print on the forum but I hear about it anyway, from a lot of people.
In any case ... all I said was don't get so defensive, or "build a bridge" as you say. I gave credit to Sam's engine as credit was clearly due, no doubt about it. If anyone needs to "build a bridge" it's all the girls that use Sam that where clearly devistated when I handed the car to Sonny and to this day continue to spread the bull shit in the background.
For the last time ... I'm not talking about you mate (or Ken for that matter), I know you don't talk behind my back, you have never had a problem saying anything directly to myself or Sonny ... and I appreciate that.

I'm stoked with it Darren especially considering the cam is only a custom 21x/220 (that's all Sonny would tell me) and it's making over 300 rwkw. The CNC heads should be better, but these cost me just about nothing after selling the L76 heads so gave them a whirl.
I could probably get 320 odd rwkw with a bigger cam like some others are doing with the L76 but big cams aren't my thing.
