View Full Version : Track Day (Wakefield Park) Monday 27-Nov-2006

Wakefield Park have an Open day on Monday, 27th November 2006.

The format of the day is one 20 minute session per hour between 9am through to 4pm.

You can come and go as you please; do one session, or six+ sessions!

Cost is $90 for the day (+$40 for a 12month Wakefield license if you dont already have one).

There is no "racing" as such; and no timing system. It is just an open day where any road registered car can participate. Wakefield is a great little circuit for beginners; it is relatively low speed and has no concrete walls; and there is plenty of open field runoff areas. You just need a car, helmet (can hire one if necessary) long sleeve top and pants, enclosed shoes and brown undies.

There is a canteen on-site that sells old-fashionsed take away style food.

Any takers?

I can't help you with the brakes unfortunately ... unless we do them down there ??? Just haven't got the time between now and then.

We usually meet up in Sydney and all head down together. If Dunc, Erik & myself are heading down from Sydney you should just meet up with us and we can all cruise down together.

Excellent, so we officially have a possie for this track day.

Troy, with that video, is the * supposed to symbolise braking, because it kind of looks like something else..

Would love to come out again, but doesn't look like I will be able to make this one. I might be able to squeeze out there for an hour or so to have a looksie or help with anything, but that's about it.

Have a busy day on that Monday unfortunately - big presentation in the morning, then on a plane to Melbourne (for training) for the rest of the week. It's not all bad though - I did manage to get accommodation in Crown Towers for the week. :D

Thats fine mate i understand that you have other things to do! :) Down at the track seems like a fine idea.

Would be an idea as whereis directed me onto the freeway to go down to wollongong and then i had to ask at subway how to get to wakey, a 4hr trip instead of 2hrs! HA!

Ok trackmaster troy sounds like an idea mate, what do i need? Obviously pads and brake fluid (my car is dot 4, any good brands? Castrol?) - any hosptial equipment?

Hethro

p.s Thats cool that ur coming down bok1!!! You'll have a blast! :D

Discounts hey?

Sounds good Troy. Being a poor uni student and all! :eyes:

It looks like ill be picking up Valvoline super performance dot 4 for the fluid, and bendix ultimates or advanced for pads. But im leaning more towards advanced as thats more suited for after the day...will shoot u off some info soon troy.

Less than 3 weeks to go now! My best mate from uni might be coming down in a r32 GTR, so a bit of rice to watch out for!!!

Hi guys.

You better take me off the list for driving or even coming (I'll only come if sam is driving - ill come in his car)

Ive been crunching some numbers and i wont be able to afford to come down, not before xmas anyway - I have got some bills to pay etc Plus id much rather do the brakes properly (ie bed/bleed them correctly) and earn some more money during xmas so i can actaully afford to fix the car if any thing goes wrong with it.

Sorry looks like the laugh will have to a wait a few more months :(

Plus i bombed one of my exams today so im not happy!

I would like to shave a couple of tenths off. Wakefield really isnt about horsepower though, so i'll have to figure out a way to get around the track a little quicker (ie learn to drive proper).

Guys, as you may know, this is an OPEN DAY at Wakefield; you dont have to get up at sparrows fart to be there for 8am. You can turn up at 9am or 10am if you like. You can essentially come and go as you like. However I plan on being at Wakefield Park 8am Monday.

We've found the best bet is to meet at the Mobil Servo Station at PHEASANTS NEST; basically this is about 40 mins south of Sydney on the M5. I found this meeting point better than trying to convoy through areas of Sydney.

So for those going early (heading south from Sydney) let's meet at PHEASANTS NEST Mobil, such that we can depart there 6:30am. We should get to Marulan BP (to top up fuel) about 7:30, taking us to Wakefield Park for 8am. I'll be leaving my place about 5:30am (Maroubra).

If this is too early for some, thats cool, just meet us at Wakefield.

A new meeting point !!! Very good.

This actually makes it easier I think, I'll hook up with Scotty at Pennant Hills and we can jump straight on the M2, then M7, then M5. That time of day should be a breeze on that road.

I take it this Mobil is on the freeway ? I can't picture it, I have probably usually dozed off and let the cruise control take over by then.

1 ... A few guys coming down just to take pics ... so that should be easy.

2 ... Several of us will have video cameras ... so no probs there.

3 ... ... now the pressure is on !!!

As much as I would love to do a sub 1:10, and I have no doubt the car has it in it, I'm not sure I'll be doing that next Monday. Haven't been on the track for 12 months and I think it may take a while to work out the best way to drive the beast around the track.

Just some notes for people who havent been before

How to get there

From Sydney, get on the M5 and head South for about 2 hours. Take the first Goulburn exit, drive through Goulburn, turn left at the brown "Wakefield Park" sign. Then drive another 10 minutes or so, Wakefield park is on left. For those going early, we are meeting at the Mobil service station at Pheasants Nest 6:30am (about 45mins south from Sydney, servo is on the freeway). If you get lost, call me on 0408327007.

Cost

$90 for drivers + $40 for 12 month Wakefield park license (if you dont already have one)

Format of day

Arive, sign up, and drive; no pre-booking required, can come and go as you like 20 minute session for street cars every hour, between 9am and 4pm. No need to get there early, you can turn up anytime after 8am

Requirements

Drivers to wear long pants, long sleeve top, and enclosed shoes; Bring a Helmet, or you can hire one at the track. Passengers allowed (on track) but they must be signed up drivers. Bring your regular car license

Lunch

There is a canteen there that sells take-away style food and drinks

Other facilities / notes

The track has an air compressor where you can pump up your tyres, no pressure gauge though (I have a gauge you can borrow). You can't get fuel at the track, best to fill up on the way down. Nearest servo is about 10 minute drive from track. There is only one or two pumps of 98 Octane in Goulburn, ask someone where they are before you head into town.

Check you have at least 50% brake pads.

Any of thoughts/questions please post them up!

It was a great day, some ups and downs, but picture perfect weather (perhaps a bit too hot) and Goulburn turned on the flies for us, millions and millions of them.

But, at least half a dozen trackchat members on~track today, and a couple more potential members signing up (Red Liberty Turbo and Blue WRX). It really wasnt a day for PB's (not for me anyway) however I believe the Red Libery pulled off a 1:09, which is awesome. Oh and Bomi (aka Risk Maker) with another go on the RE55's netting him a 1:13.3 PB, well done mate.

Lautray, what can i say; TWO cracked rear rotors! Gotta give those 6x6 DBA wiper slots a miss I reckon. So Erik had to sit out a few sessions.. Any future mod plans Erik? Do tell.

NickS, awesome to see the Coupe4 Stroker Turbo in the flesh; and whizzing around a recetrack no less. Can't wait to see some of the video footage.

Unfortunately towards the end of the day, Burto (RS4) spun off the track, clipping a ripple strip and (we think) buckling a rim, I hope you can get that fixed or a new rim without too much drama. Little consolation, but it could have been a lot worse.

Kyle, what can we say but thanks for putting in the big effort to come and shoot photos for us; I'll be buying some for sure, really appreciate the effort mate, I know it's a long day.

Good to see a few track newbies along, having a go too, well done guys.

My car went well today, first couple of sessions were ho-hum, but started reeling off low 1:12's and even one 1:11.9, still a whole second off the pace though. As for the harrop brakes, I am still undecided if they are worthwhile. I'm having a few issues with them, pads not fitting right in the caliper, and getting some rather loud vibration noises which gave me the shits. I dont think the bigger brakes have helped my lap times, just being honest.

I have some video which hopefully I can rip and post up soon. I am sure Bomi has heaps too.

thanks for a great day guys.

Although a certain white VX SS owner was putting bad ideas into my head about more power :) He was kind enough to offer me a DBA brand boat anchor though...

It was hard watching cars go flying around the track and not being able to join in the fun :D Although even harder was eating the pie I bought from the canteen, the bottom fell out of it and it went everywhere! Just a bit embarrassing...

What a day ...

I left early (3:30) as being one that doesn't sleep a whole lot I wanted to be on the road at a time that I had a chance of staying awake. Would have loved to have stayed till the end of the day but I just can't do that drive after 5pm ... bores the life out of me.

Had a few brake issues early in the day, shudder after a few laps when they got really hot. I had this same issue at Eastern Creek at the start of the year. However it seemed to improve as the day went on, I'll need to do another day to see how they go but there was very little, if any, shudder by the end of the day.

Everything else in the car didn't miss a beat. No fluid leaks, temp didn't even approach half way all day, gear box stood up to the punishment (for now). Reset the trip computer before I left and 550kms later, including all the track work, I averaged 16.1 litres / 100 kms for the day. Love your work Sonny.

Tried the new tyres out yesterday and despite the fact that it's a pain in the the arse to get the things on they were brilliant. Much better than street tyres. The suspension worked a treat, I can actually dial in more of a track setup and will do this next time, just took everything fairly easy yesterday. I was consistently in the 1:14 bracket and based on a dodgy stopwatch time I may have managed a 1:12 near the end of the day. The brakes had me somewhat hesitant all day so I hope to give it more of a go next time. I do however feel that 2+ tonnes is never going to be suited to incredible times around Wakefield.

Main thing is ... we all had a ball.

What a fun day.... I had a ball....

First time to the track... with more than one corner:)

My best was a 1:17:22... and yes I had my traction control on all day... yes soft... but I didnt want to worry about my lack of car control skills early on... then forgot later on...

Fun moment for me was travelling around turn 5 when I could no longer steer and had to head off the track with troy up my clacker... the terpentine... no serpentine or something belt came off... had to crawl back to the pits...

Thanks troy for driving me into town and fitting for me....

Thanks to all for a good day... its great to see everyone helping everyone out.

Few points from the day:

Flys Dear lord how many were down there! Did we bring them down with us or something? The rid got a workout! Althought i found if you sat down in the shade they didnt bother you!

Troy and Gill Its always great to see you Troy and to finally meet you Gill! Hope you enjoyed my stories on the way down haha. And dont fret Sam and Hugh will be joining up soon.

Erik Honestly you are a good driver, far out! Im sure the nanna naps before the sessions helped you out haha! Thanks once again for taking me out (on the track that is!)

Scott Mate you are one lucky bugger with your fan belt, hope you got home in one peice!

Kyle Dude looking forward to your happy snaps, should be some good 'uns there! Thanks for the Red Bull on the way down :eyes:

Dunc Cant wait too see that new engine in your red beast, I think you enjoyed the flys as much as i did ha!

Nick Man sorry to hear the brakes are still rooted! Hope you can get those sorted out so you can fly around the track with even more confidence :)

Hugh, Maz and Sam Thanks for coming down. Good to see some 4cyl's going around, cheers again to Hugh for drive back to city!

*One random note from the day - When I was out with Sam in the mx5 for the last session the Blue 350 Z was stopped on the exit lane off turn 12 before going onto the straight - As soon as we turned to go onto the straight it started to reverse back onto the straight! What an idiot! :yike:

Hope everyone enjoyed the day as much as I did - I'll be there next time for sure in the Camry haha

vosadrian
28-11-2006, 05:01 PM
Thanks for the tips mate!! :)

What an experience it was driving your car on the track. Much different to mine (AWD turbo). Your car has a good second or two in it maybe more with the traction control off (but was not game to turn it off in a car that is not mine). It is a really invasive system and seems to keep the power out for a long period of time after it detects the slip. A little bit of slip would be much better for lap times than the loss of power caused by the traction control. I could not feel any slippage at all when it was cutting in... do you have an LSD? Maybe it was single wheel slip rather than both?

The brakes on your car were awesome. Very powerful... a little difficult to get used to the feel... but smooth and confidence inspiring. I should have been braking later than I did with those stoppers. The gearbox and clutch and pedal placement were a bit difficult for me.... I normal heel-toe, but could not with yours. Just different to smaller cars that I am used to really.

I was surprised how top end oriented the power was. I know this goes against everything, but my 4 cylinder turbo pulled out of the corners alot better than the big V8.... gearing would have had a play in this also, but the LS1 engine is off the boil below about 3500-4000, and you could catch it out coming out of the slower 3rd gear corners.

I would have liked to take you for some laps in mine just to show the differences if not for my delaminated front tyre!! :( The smaller/lighter size with much harder suspension really is alot more direct in its handling, and the turbo torque really pulls from lower RPM. Of course mine has alot of mods to do that!! :)

Thanks again for the drive!!

Good to hear everyone had a good day and no major brakedowns occurred.
Eric - you need to do something about your achors. Is this the third time you have had problems with the stoppers? :headbang:

Nick- Lucky bastard, bet it would have been awesome piloting the coupe round there. :up2sum:

Dont feel bad Dave I also had to keep the Aussie economy ticking over.

My best was a 1:17:22... and yes I had my traction control on all day... yes soft... but I didnt want to worry about my lack of car control skills early on... then forgot later on...

Not soft at all Scotty, well advised and sensible IMHO. :)

Better to err on the side of caution when 1st venturing onto the track as opposed to opting for the hero option and then working out "hmmm how the hell am I gunna get to work tomorrow" when it's all gone pear shaped in a moment if excuberance.

Good on ya for having a go.

Yep... next rotors for the rear will NOT be DBA4000 with wiper slots... I think the little wiper slot is their weakness. Can't be wrong 3 times :headbang: . May try RDA's or DBA4000 with no slots. Cant keep kissing >$200/rotor goodbye every track day.

How old are your rotors lautray?

How old are your rotors lautray?

Erik would be stepping on a plane right now.

(his Rotors may have done a two or three track days)

The theory on why these are cracking relates to the relative thickness of the DBA4000 ventilated rear rotor "side wall", versus say a SOLID rear DBA4000 (which others here might be running, and which I have run, with nil issues).... with 315mm REAR DBA4000's, being ventilated, and not as thick as the fronts of course - thus relative thickness of each "side wall" of these rear rotors is rather thin, much thinner than a non-ventilated (solid) rear. I hope that makes sense.

Watching rear DBA4000's fail like this (three times) cracking right on the "wiper slot" (I think that's what that little slot is at the top of each disc is called) - well I just wouldnt run these ventilated rear rotors again.

However, I have run the solid rear DBA4000's and never had a problem. Kind of ironic that something designed to be more robust ends up being the reverse. In any case, its just a theory, and could be wrong, but it seems to make sense to me.

Here is a pic demonstrating where they fail:

I believe Erik has tried to take this up with DBA a couple of times, but they have not responded.

Wakefield was my very first track day and what a day! I didn't actually get on the tracK but still had a good time!

After seeing the Renault Clio out there, I'm wondering if the Rolla could be taken out for a spin... :lmao:

But seriously, I'm too much of a scaredy cat to get into the passenger seat of Bomi's beast, especially when he's driving! Perhaps Valium would be useful in that situation!!

Look forward to attending other track days!! Nice to finally meet the other members I have been hearing so much about (all good of couse!)

hey guys, i was down at wakefield in a nc mx5 (Wasnt mine, twas dads) as was my mate in his clio. Glad to see your all sensible and dont try and run us slow cars off the road, hope we didnt hold you up to much. some of you i met most i didnt, but glad everyone had fun. Hope all the injured cars pull up ok!

(btw my car is a 2000 wrx [with 25inch chrome wheels and 1 metric tonne of stereo equipment, and in stead of fluffy dice ive got chrome dice the size of your head- i jest its standard] and is currently at the panel beaters after i restyled the front end, hence my reason for not bringing it. Just dont want you thinking that the poofy convertible was mine)

Well done guys! Can't wait to see video's!!! Bring em on. Sorry couldn't make it for a looksee, hope to be racing with you next time.

Dunc. The problem with the pads, do you think that is an inherent redstuff problem? Erik. I would go to DBA and request new ones (non wiper-slot). Even thought they aren't supposed to be used for the track, that kind of fault is ridiculous. Nick, good to see you running in the coupe. Chuck as much neg camber on the front as you can next time, and watch it turn in. Bomi - awaiting your roaming camera angle footage.

Hazza, I'm not sure. I've had more than one vendor tell me it is a known issue with harrop calipers (the calipers not built to a fine enough tolerance) and the pads requiring linishing. I'm not really happy, if i knew this much attenton was required for each new pad set, i would have never bought them. FWIW, the vendor (just brakes) tried to fit a set of bendix ultimates to a new harrop performance brake package the other day (thje "OEM" pad harrop use) and they had to spend an hour or two filing down the pad backing plates. Something is not right with this kit.

Now then now then the Clio is a perfectly good car Gill! Its considered to be the best sports hatch back going around for the last few years!

I bet you my camry would be quicker than your 'rolla round the track!
