That is surprisingly very clear vision. Is the mic separate? Not much wind noise picked up on that vid.

That's great John. Looks wicked. Would love to hot-lap Bathurst. Every red-blooded Aussie male's dream. Seems the camera works a treat too.

Were you backing off down Conrod or was it just the wind noise in the mic louder than the engine?

NickS
19-12-2007, 04:38 AM
I think "Drive Bathurst" in an absolute must do ... that was great John, thanks for posting. I'm still amazed at how little wind noise there is, very impressive.

A few Q's ...

When are these cameras available ?

How fast did you get up to down Conrod ?

I picked up mine today and I have not tested it yet (Apart from in the lounge room), but it looks the goods, very solid components and construction. Good instructions and is very simple to use.

The mounts look great and give you many different angles, the SUCTION cup mounts is massive compared to the size and weight of the camera :yep:

:bravo:

Thanks John.

Edit ... just been having a play (how hard is it to work this close to Christmas !!!) ... this is awesome, I can't wait to get it on the car and try it out. Very, very light and the suction cup is super strong, I couldn't pull it off my window at work no matter how hard I tried. You can mount the camera upside down and then switch something in the settings so it will keep the picture the right way up ... and it's water proof !!!

Quick question for you John ... will the camera record until the memory is full ? I stuck it on the front of the car on the way home, but it turned off at 10m:30s. The file size is only 350mb so there is heaps of room on the card ???

The picture up till then was sensational ... :bravo:

For a clearer view for all that dont have it, save your footage to the TC media Gallery then post the link in here.

Also did you use the suction cup for that or one of the sticky mounts?

That's what I meant by square-ish ... it doesn't look wide screen I guess. Considering the size of the camera it has a very wide shot, I was amazed how much it fits in.

As I said, the image looks more normal when the camera is mounted on the front, I just wanted to see what the wheel looked like. I reckon that would be an awesome shot on the track. If you aimed it a bit lower you would pick up all the flexing of the tyres on the rim.

I'll be having more of a play tomorrow ... I'll get some more up after that.

WOW! Considering the size of this camera the picture quality is very good and sharp. And it is ultra portable enough to put anywhere. And waterproof too!! What more could you want.

The only thing I could pick a little on it, would be the framerate. Even though I see the sample footage is stamped 30fps in the header, but it seems to be around 20fps as it's a little jerky sometimes. But still for its size it is very good as most other micro ones do 15fps tops. Also it has an interesting image stabilisation system. If you look at John's in car video, over bumps etc it actually smoothes the picture out by removing pixels (electronic stabiliser as opposed to an optical one?). Watch the passenger airbag cover (or the windscreen) and notice how it shrinks and stretches in vertical size to absorb camera shake. In such a small device, this is actually a great feature.

Does it use miniSD/microSD? From Nick's clip it seems the native res is 512x384, is this changeable? The codec it uses for recording seems to be MJPG (motion jpeg), are there quality settings like high/low (ie Nick's was obviously the highest as it is around 4mbps which is a great quality stream)? Also I assume it is a fixed lens, so no zooming. Are wide angle attachments available (ie is there thread on the inbuild lens)?

Also what does the wireless video camera mean? If it records locally to SD card, what is the purpose of the wireless? Does it come with a receiver and allow realtime viewing (or recording to another device) too?

Hazza

Hazza, SD card, normal one. Wireless as in there are no wires attached, thats all I can answer for now.

Im taking mine wakeboarding on Thursday (remember to attach some foam so it floats Troy) so well see how it goes in a marine environment.

Gee Troy thanks for the helpfull answers.. NOT!!! LOL..

I know it uses a normal SD card. My question is, is it normal microSD or normal miniSD haha.. And also, of course there are no wires, it records locally to memory. But this is usually called standalone, not wireless. Wireless means it communicates to something else using wireless signals. Just wondering what it communicates to? John any ideas?

John, SD card, as in an SD card as in not a micro or mini or tiny or small. I dont know what to call it but SD card, if it were a micro I would call it Micro etc :lmao:

I just got mine, the thing is great. Shame I rushed out to use it without reading the manual. I did some video's, only to download them and find it was in picture mode :headbang:

I want to mount it over my shoulder like the video below (that was using a different camera which had a helmet strap, i just strapped to the head rest). Any ideas how to do it easily?

Basically i just want to see the speedo/tacho and out the front. I tried sticking the suction cap to the drivers window which kind of worked, but you can hardly see out the front, most the steering wheel and dials, and the left side of the road.

I guess you don't have a sunroof mate ? That works perfectly, just flip the picture and hang it from the glass.

Otherwise, have you tried extending the arms as much as you can and using the passenger side rear window, you should be able to get a pretty good angle from there ... maybe.

2 cameras is a good idea, actually, three would be nice, looking out the front, feet, speedo/tacho

The Oregon scientific one i had did ok (youtube videos above), i got that one for $180ex for my old work, but had to give it to a customer. This camera is a much nicer unit with more features, easier to use, good suction mount etc.

I am in the process of making up a 4 camera in car 2009 CAMS approved system. It will be with help from our IT side of the company I work for. I am planning to be under $600 total. I will make sure it has ability to patch into the performance box when I get that too. All solid state so no heavy things and using very light but hi res off the shelf camers. 4 camers will run all togeather and record all togeather.
I estimage about 2 months before final testing. I will put one in the GTS to test for race conditions and one in the ave for normal street use to test for that too. It will be two forward and one out each side all wide angle. Also will have a run on feacture so records for a set time while you are in carparks etc for breakings and people damaging cars in carparks. Low power use so easy to do.
I have the cameras and the digital recorder already just need mounting systems, testing and the IT blokes work out the cumputer side stuff. The company has access to world wide resources for IT systems and they buy direct so you would never get the cameras for the price they pay hence the mission to get it all under $600.
I will update over time.

I should have the first one sorted in about 2 weeks. I can only use the avalanche for road use for now but once the GTS back I will get some track time in with it set up in there.

Basically it will be
4 camera input, one mic input, solid state DVR both vibration and impact resistant, relatively light. Has full run on and also motion sensing
Removable 3.5inch, 250G HDD
2 bullet style camera at 420 TV lines (with option of 2 more camera at extra $150 odd)
Zoom style microphone with wind resistance
20 meters of high quality wire and connectors included. Easy to make up leads to the length you want.

Base 2 camera package it will be about $550 to $650 plus freight. Extra 2 camera it will be about $150. Need to make sure the camera are spot on before firming price.

Mounting systems depending on roll cage, no cage, cams requirements or just street use. Price will vary on this but my intention is to offer many options at the best price.

Installation costs will vary. You can do it yourself depending on what you want. I am going to set the avalanche up to record on start up and for 6 hours after ignition off under the motion sensing setting so trips to the shops in case some bugger wants to break in then I will have his mug on camera. The GTS will be just on start up and shut off.
Total maximum power draw will be 1.1 amps@12Vdc with 2 cameras and 1.4 amps with 4 cameras. Depending on your amp hour rating of your battery would depend on how long your could record.
This will be found out during the testing. Est would be about 6 hours.

I am also doing a test on remote GPS tracking system that I might be able to plug into this camera system. Still not sure yet. That will be about $500 plus a $10 month sim card fee. (you own the card). For example your car alarm goes off, you get a sms from the tracking system saying alarm, you would be able to call your car and have a look at what is going via your mobile phone.
I am working on that one.

I will let you know how it all goes.
BTW these would be good for in the home too if you wanted one for car and one for home. Just some different cameras with IR would be required. Just a tad more for the cameras.

It is in offers and products so my imput is in the someone elses thread. I made the error as I though it was general discussions for incar cameras.

Big sorry about where I put this information. Remove my informaiton if you deam it not suitable please trackchat bosses

Without making it too complicated, why don't you just start a new thread with your posts 45624 and 47240 and we can then delete these ones.

I look forward to seeing your progress on this... my only suggestion with the startup routine on the GTS, you may wish to have a couple of minutes after ignition in case you stall in the outfield and have to turn off the car before restarting.. I experienced this with the driftbox...
