View Full Version : Motor Mag - Wakefield Oct 4 - Proton Accident
Hey guys, for those of you that were at Wakefield on the 4th Oct (Eric, Dunc, Troy and others), and recall that Proton that somehow spun around and ran into the tyre barrier where the track marshalls sit, the poor bugger that owns it wrote to the "write off" pages of Motor magazine this month.
Felt sorry for the guy. I was right behind him and still can't figure out just how he lost it (evidentally, either can he). He states that a contributor would have been the fact that he had "better rubber on the front". He still can't get how it got him so out of shape so quick.
Anyway, there is a photo in the magazine as well.

Hazza spoke with him afterwards on the day, apparently he was running slicks on the front and regular road radials on the rear (to save money)... I think that contributed to the balance/grip/handling of the car being significantly out of whack, and when things got a bit out of shape, it bit him hard.

That makes sense Dunc. It happened here on the circuit:

He must have become unstuck from the right - left bend and got a bit of pendulum effect happening. He then spun around and literally rolled backwards into the tyres. Being right behind him made me :puke:
Goes to show the importance of a well balanced car on track.

Yeah when I came into the pits after that session was red flagged (saw him on the infield but didn't know he hit anything), I drove into my pit bay and he was a couple of bays over, and I noticed him perplexing looking at the back of his car. So I went over to see what he was looking at, and then saw the huge damage!!!
Felt really really sorry for him, so gave him a hand straightening his car out a bit so he could limp back to Canberra. Also told him to go see a panel beater mate of mine in Canberra. Nice bloke, just caught out running semi-slicks on the front and street tyres on the rear. Made the car way too oversteery, combined with the tight line he took at that kink sent him into the spin. How unlucky to hit that marshal's post is unbelievable.
Spoke with Colby through emails to see how it all turned out, and he took it pretty well, but he said he has lost all confidence to go out again for a while. Damage was pretty big unfortunately (around 5 big ones). He told me he wrote to motor, and that the article would be published.
Here (http://www.yourfilelink.com/get.php?fid=210296) is the onboard video of the off.
And the pic.. (that's me in the Holden top, trying to work out how to rip the rear bumper off)

Ouch, looks a bit on the nasty side. Good to hear he was ok. How does he go with repairs? Does he have to pay for it himself? Will insurance cover this? Is there a special policy you can get for occasional track days?

Not really mate, you break it you fix it.
If you don't do something silly like put race tyres on the front and street tyres on the back ----> :slap: ... and you don't over drive, there really is very little chance of hitting anything at Wakefield.

Or if your mates car drops oil in front of you as you stick the boot in on the first corner to go up the main straight! :)
