View Full Version : Rubber on rear bar

What do you use to get tyre rubber off the rear bar, say, after going to the drags??? Having white paint, it is not easy to camouflage the black marks, & I am getting more of them. I heard kero can be used, but won't it also take the paint off too? Also, what do people use as a preventative measure i.e. apply before they go to the drags, so the rubber doesn't stick to the bar?

Thoughts/tips appreciated.

To be honest the easiest time to get it off is when it is cold and hard so it can be flicked off and I've always found that the pressure washer gets most of it, just be careful with pressure washers as if you concentrate the water too much off comes the paint too.

As to kero, a guy I know gave me that tip for washing the lower half of your car and wheels, it removes all the road grime and crap but not that good on rubber unfortunately, then you simply wash twice to get rid of the kero and reapply polish or whatever you use and it comes up an absolute treat. It wont hurt your paint, I wouldn't do it every wek though.

The worst rubber I have ever had to get off was from a set of MT ET Drags ie full slicks that put a thick gooey layer on everything (I beleive they were stuffed as they never hooked up) that never hardened and the only way to get it off was heaps of prepsol which kinda broke the rubber down and make an awful mess.

- Pick it off
- Pressure washer
- Try kero if you like
- Finally last resort is Prepsol

I'm sure there are other methods but that is what I have used with success.

As to what to prep with prior to the drags I have heard that WD40 works well however I've never tried it and don't know that I'd want to although having a think about it I would use something along the lines of Armour All or other product use on making shit look clean, I'd think that would work quite well but I've also never tried it. Short of this you can always tape it up but not the most attractive option

yep ... I agree with Luke but with slight variation.

Spary rubber on bar with light spray of kero/WD40 ... leave for a couple of minutes to penetrate ... then high pressure clean off.

Suggested methods of preventing in the first place.

1. spray area with WD40/armour all prior to drags.
2. Masking tape applied to the offending area.
3. Don't own a white car.

I don't smile either ... :D

I always found using Silicon spray on the guards before the drags meant the rubber just wiped off. Also don't own a white car. :yep:

Silver car, rubber is still there :headbang:

Prevent it buy....hmmmm... I was gonna put contact over the area to make a barrier that would catch the rubber. Then just peel it off, would be almost invisible to the naked eye.

Must try that one day :yep:

Perhaps screw on a pair of factory mudflaps just for the drags? I still have them fitted to my white car and only get rubber on the last inch or so of the bar. As for the wheel well, I'm still scratching it out from the last drag day... :headbang:

I know Adam (VXLS1) used to have those mudspats on his white vx, purposely for the drags. It did work for him.

2nd AWD in the stable now, hmmmm having driven AWD's I can see how the "stick to the road-abilty" of them is a selling point, not that you are getting the GTR just for AWD.

if you are unlucky to be first few cars after they have there fun on a wednesday night it is way worse :flip1:

We use WD40 or cooking oil on the doorslammer.

I think slick rubber is way easier to remove than ETs though.
But there is bucket loads of it each event.

It literally falls out with just a wipe.

I just sprayed on some Tyre Shine and the rubber and crap from the track basically fell off on it's own.A quick wipe before i left and not a trace :)
