I got this email the other day, it's about the Canberra Drag Strip saga.. It would be good to have another stirp within driving distance to Sydney.
To All Members.
Thank you for your continued support in the battle with the Stanhope Government to reconstruct a Dragway in the ACT.
As you are probably aware by now, Mr Stanhope passed off the Dragway issue to Mr Barr over twelve months ago. Mr Barr, (aka the minister for bad news) lived up to his reputation and promptly declared that Block 51 Majura was not suitable for the relocation of the Canberra International Dragway (CID) under their newly established "Draft" noise policy. This farcical "Draft" policy was hastily thrown together for the specific purpose, we believe, to exclude Motorsport from the Canberra region. Should this "Draft" policy be applied to other events such as the Canberra Show, the Multicultural Festival and Skyfire then, under this policy, they would not be allowed to operate.
The Stanhope Government maintains that they "continue to support the reinstatement of a Dragway in the ACT". Mr Barr continues to tell us that he is negotiating with the Commonwealth Government to reopen the previous facility at Fairbairn. In the twelve months since Mr Barr canned the Dragway the only thing he has "continued" to do is ignore us.
CMSG members, make no mistake! The Stanhope government has done nothing to promote the return of Motorsport to the ACT and have no real intentions of doing so. We, CMSG Directors, predict that Mr Stanhope will again promise ACT residents a Dragway prior to the October ACT election this year in an attempt to gain the significant "Motorsport VOTE".
Don’t be fooled by his empty promises again!
As a direct result of the failure of the Stanhope led ACT Labor Government to address the Dragway reconstruction (as per Mr Stanhopes 2004 election promise to " have a Dragway open within 18 months) a new political party has emerged.
The "Australian Motorist Party" (AMP) was formed by motorists and Motorsport enthusiasts that have had enough of the arrogance, and ignorance, of the ACT Labor Government. The AMP is made up from local people from all walks of life and headed by our long time Dragway campaigner Mr Geoff Develin. The aim of the AMP is to represent ACT motorists and Motorsport enthusiasts in the ACT Legislative Assembly and serve to give "us" a voice. The ACT Labor Government has been put on notice for the upcoming 2008 election that we will not be treated as second class citizens any longer. The AMP will field candidates in each of the ACT electorates in 2008 and your further support is appreciated.
The time for aggressive action commences now and here is your chance to be part of that action. Simply go to the AMP web site ( www.amp.org.au ) and download the application for membership form. Membership is $50.00 per year, donations are also cheerfully accepted, and these funds go directly to promoting the AMP for the future benefit of Canberra motorists and Motorsport enthusiasts. Since the closure of the Canberra International Dragway in excess of $100K has been spent taking the fight back to successive Governments and now is your chance to help.
The only way "we" ( Motorsport participants/spectators/fans ) can make a difference is to be heard in the ACT Legislative Assembly.
The only way we can be heard in the ACT Legislative Assembly is by having our own representatives.
The only way we can have our own representative in the ACT Legislative Assembly is with your support.
The CMSG Directors officially endorse the AMP and their objectives and trust all CMSG members will adopt the AMP values and offer their full support.
Thank you all.
