View Full Version : Do tyres go "off" in storage?

I was thinking of wacking back on my original SS 17" wheels and tyres for the drag day (save the good tyres), but they have been laying in the garage for around 2 years.

Do tyres go off when stored like that? Will they still be ok? I remember somewhere someone saying something about tyres going hard and therefore losing grip. Is that true or not?

Thanks. They are the original B530's. I'll try them out a bit before and see how they are.

If they have been kept out of direct sunlight and have been mostly dry, they should be just fine. UV is the main thing that degrades the rubber compounds.

Cheers,

Cheers Beej, they've been inside the garage (dry and out of sun) so hopefully are ok.

I bought some rims and rubber from Dunc a while ago, and they'd been sitting in his garage for a fair while (I think?)

For the first few kms it was like driving on ice...all over the place. After that though, they were fine (and lasted me a good 6,000km + before they even got close to needing replacing!)

Cheers,
- Febs.

Would have been at least 6 months Febs, maybe 12.
