View Full Version : Mixing cross-ply & radials (at the drags)
I'm after some advice; the ANDRA rulebook says you can't run radial fronts with cross-ply rear (slicks). Apparently it can upset the handling balance and contribute to an accident if you get a bit out of shape.
Anyway, can you run cross-ply FRONTs and (say) M/T RADIALS on the REAR?
Does the same situation hold, it is considered unsafe? Or is it ok?
Reason for asking - it's apparently technically ok by ANDRA to run cross-plys on the front and radials on the rear. We are having issues finding 4" wide radials that don't have a 80km/hr safety stamp on them (we were told to change the tyres the other night at the drags). We don't want to switch to something that is technically sanctioned, yet actually not as safe.
With the power you are putting out now and will be putting out in the future Dunc, does it matter weather or not you have FR's or just normal tyres and rims on the front.
Surely the weight difference and rolling resistance difference with your power out put would negate the need and hassle to find the correct and legal tyres.
Non the less, good luck mate. Looking forward to seeing your beast at the nats.
Troy
I'm asking on behalf of someone else

Yes you can. They changed the rule so you can. I am using ET Fronts and Weld Draglites with ET radials rear. It feels great - no issues at all. It also means i can swap from slicks to radials on the rear whenever its required.
Mine feels more stable with ET fronts on than with any other front wheel combo ive tried before. They 7lb a tyre as well.

Thanks for that Steve.
So the issue with mixing radials and cross plys doesnt hold true when the cross plys are on the front? Interesting. Thanks for making a call on that, nobody else did.

LOL I just so happen to have a set of 4" wide radial F/R's here on Convos here off the old ute..
Well i acquired a full set of m/t fronts (cross plys) and rears (cross ply slicks) - and started the day on those. After it was obvious the slicks wern't going to work (due to rubbing - there goes $500) we fitted the m/t radials - and as per what Steve said no an issue in the world, it works fine.

it is fine when you have cross on the front and radial on the rear, its when you have cross on the back and radials on the front,
trust me it is very very dangerious, i used to race my rx7 like that back in the mid 90's, 120mph it was only a matter of time before the wall would have been meet

Excuse my ignorance.
I'm doing a private day this weekend.I've borrowed two MT Drag radial slicks
and was intending on running them with my normal front nankangs.
I'm now thinking i need front runners...Is that correct?

If you are running MT radials (et streets) on the rear you can run your regular front road wheels/tyres.
You are not supposed to run your regular front (road) tyres with crossply REARS however.

Not MT streets. They are MT drag .Are they radial or crossply?

MT Drag are slicks. You are not really supposed to run them on the rear whilst running radials on the front. Having said that though, it is only a rule for cars running quicker than 12.50's (from memory).

If thats the case.I need front runners. Thanks for that.
I got MT streets and drags sitting in my loungeroom. With the same psi
the drags are so soft.Particulary on the sidewall

Yeah Tony, don't try racing on slicks with radial fronts, I've driven on them once and I found it downright scary and fricken dangerous. I bailed by 100km/h. It felt like driving whilst the diff was propped up by a trolley jack. Not cool at all.
Good luck on Sunday I was only thinking about that earlier. Bring on another PB. :)

Thanks Luke.
I'll be going flat out whatever i'm running with.Hopefully i will line up some front runners before Sunday.I'm sure i'll crack a pb with slicks.Just the weight
in rims should get me there.

:hmmm: ... maybe that was your problem, these cars are heaps faster going forwards.

26"x 8.5 x 15
just the weight of the rims alone. I would have thought would give me a PB.

Make sure they dont rub/scrub under your car. Mine was scrubbing bad and we lost mph. I switched back to the et radials.

Done some passess on my street tyres while waiting to borrow some
frontrunners.Ran 12.409 111.90mph.
The thing is the day before i dropped my car at Beaurepaires(merrylands)
to get a broken wheelstud replaced.
So when it comes time to change the rears at the track.
TWO WHEELSTUDS snapped off from the very same wheel i had the one
fixed the day before.Nice work
I wasnt game to run slicks after that.I did make 4 passess on MT'S with only
3 nuts on the wheel attached. But commonsense got the better of me and i called it a day.Basically my whole day was ruined.
Best i done was 12.108@113.33mph
