Has anyone done it?

I just got an Asus EeePC and thinking about installing a cut down version of XP, and installing HPTuners. After advice from those that have tried. As some of you probably know this little UMPC comes with Linux installed (ubuntu).

Perhaps people have run HPT under Linux using some emulator?

Anyway I am going to try and install XP on the EeePC, just wanted a heads up if anyone has tried it, and perhaps failed or succeeded. I am a little nervious about the driver situation with XP using this machine.

If it works, this little PC will be perfect for in-car stuff.

The "EeePC" is just a very cheap flash-based laptop (it doesnt have a hard drive, it just uses flash memory for the operating system and storage). And the thing is very small (7-inch screen) However it only ships with the Linux operating system currently (something called Ubuntu, kind of like windows for Linux).

thanks Dale, good to hear.

Which drivers do you mean? I think the asus website has a bunch of drivers you can download from their website.

Btw how is it? Does it work ok> Any problems reading and writing PCM's??

it comes with xp drivers on the cd when you buy it so you dont have to download anything and for $499 or what ever they are now is worth it, i got mine when they first came out in october.

it works fine, no problems here, only use it at the track, mostly for the data logger as the software wouldnt work on my normal laptop but i have that fixed now.

battery life is good but it really is a little small to do a full tune with but for just making a quick change to a tune it is ok, i still perfer my bigger laptop over it tho

That's good news Dale.. to hear no problems and it all works. And that's exactly what i want to use for for, something small enough to throw in the glovebox (for the track) and has good battery life.

Well i finally got XP loaded onto the thing. The XP install (from thumbdrive) took over 24 hours to complete! Anyway XP seems to load pretty quick (30 seconds or so - certainly no slower than an ordinary lappy). I am yet to get all the drivers loaded though.

I think this is going to be the perfect "track laptop" though.

it took me under a hour to do the whole install using a USB cd drive... 24 hours i would have thrown it out the window well before then

Yeah i know it sounds crazy. I read a few online install guides (for usb drives) and i kind of expected it. One guy said it took 48 hours!

Hmmm I wonder if you could run the ASUS into a screen in the dash so you could monitor the car while driving?

I dont see why not Daniel. Btw it has a port for an external screen (old style analogue i think). Actually there is a touch screen kit for the asus, maybe you could just disconnect the flip up screen and build somethign around that!

Apparently there is a 9" version of the eeePC coming out, with more memory and bigger solid state drive, and with XP pre-installed.

Just a quick update, the eeePC has been going strong, no problems. It is a great little "secondary" computer.

I aquired some upgrades for this one recently:

1. Touch screen kit (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5HZM9U87Ik). Daniel this might help with your in-car stuff , hell this thing is so good i might throw away my head unit and put this thing into the car! The ebay vendor is called "KiddShop" and the touch screen kit is about $60~$80.

2. 8Gb SD card. As you probably know the eeePC doesnt have a hard drive, it uses flash memory alone for o/s & storage. The 8gb card costs $40!AU (from HK). Hell i remember paying hundreds of dollars for 256Mb back when mp3 players where novel. This SD card equates to about $5/Gb.

3. 2gb memory upgrade. The eeePC only comes with 512Mb ram, it wasnt really a problem as such, but at $40AU for 2Gb (Kingston RAM) from the same supplier as the SD card, i thought why not. Shipping for both memory items was $15AU combined. The ebay vendor is called "PC NightMarket".

Hey Duncan

Can the processor keep up when you log with HPT and Efi Live?

Johnny, i mainly use the HPT blackbox for logging, then download to laptop. I havent logged "realtime" to this laptop. But i'll give it a go and report back.

How are you securing your laptop during events?

I want to do this, my ecu has full data-logging capabilities through consult port.

Dunc, The little Eee's benefit really well from a RAM upgrade. Very simple and quick to do aswell. Just pop the rear access port off, unplug/plug in new RAM and power it up. RAM should be about $50-$60 for a 2GB stick.

My 10.1" Eee sped up quite a bit with an extra GB of Memory however i will be going to Windows7 as the difference between XP and 7 is chalk and cheese speed wise.

the little 7" EeePC was great, and i've since purchased a 10" version (XP, 1Gb RAM) which i am using as my main home browser laptop. Been great for what it is. I dont use hptuners anymore though, or rarely. I mainly use these laptops for looking at driftbox data now. Not had an issue with the two EeePC's, top products. Got my wife a 17" EeePC since as well.

My EeePC 8.9 works great with XP and has been good with every ECU Ive tried it on to date, for $190 its great. Im using it right now as its good on the net also.
