View Full Version : I'm 50/50 at what to do!

Guys i've hit a brick wall in what to do with regard to tyres when i purchase my XHP jet blacks next month. The wheels package will come with Nankang NS2s.

I've been told that these tyres are great bang for buck and real good when new however, turn to shit when half worn. Now i've been discussing on the 'other forum' about what high end road tyre to get so i can go to the track, race and go home with no fuss until i buy some drag tyres. Now i'm leaning toward Bridgestone Adrenalin RE001s,only problem is that they only go up to 18"...as far as i can tell from my research.

I started out wanting 19" rims but can't find anything near the load rating that i would be comfortable with.In 18s it's all good there and i don't mind going 18s but i wouldn't mind some suggestions in 19" tyres as i originally had my heart set on them to start with.

I think for track/drags 18" rims are the go but......i really don't know wtf to do

I hope some of you can understand my dilemma and have more of a clue than myself cause i'm getting no where fast :headbang:

I think you might be stuffed mate ... I don't think there is anything in 19" that will have great grip when drag racing.

Have you considered getting some good 19" road tyres and then having 2 18" rims (anything cheap, pick them up 2nd hand) with some RE55s or similar for the strip ? That way all you have to do is swap the rears for the track, yet the 19's will look great daily.

Just a thought ...

On another note, I'd highly recommend Falken FK-452 in the 19's ... I ran them on the VYIISS I had, the Coupe 4 (including several 1.6 60' / one 1.5 60' / heaps of 11 second runs and a 10.9) and I also have them on the SSV (in 20's) ... I'll probably get them on the GTS too when it's tyres wear out. They are extremelly well priced and we have never had a "moment" on them.

Good luck champ.

You maybe right there Nick :( but the search continues for the moment as i'm a glutton for punishment.

I certainly have thought about a 'decent' 19" tyre and to the point that i've delayed my decision for a couple of months now.Very good suggestion though with regard to the smaller rims and RE55s for the drags and trust me...i am thinking about it.

The Falkens do look good and are reasonably priced as you say at around 270-280 ish per corner?

Spoilt for choice seems to be the problem here  I've got to laugh or i'll go crazy.

Cheers mate.

I have used the FK-452 in 19's also. I thought they were fab. Great value for money & the grip was grand in wet & dry. I'd look at Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3. Although, not sure if they are available in 19's. And don't know whether they'd be any good for drag racing either.

I've got F1s now in 17's Erik and pulled a 12.6 at the last private day so they go ok :D

I think i'll go the way of the Falkens for the 19s and just buy some cheap rims and get me some proper drag tyres(of which i will be asking for suggestions due to my lack of knowledge on that subject)

Getting to the track is a hard task given that my lovely wife works mostly arvo/nite shifts as i've got the 3 kids to look after hence why i jumped at the last organised day.....absolutely loved it!

Thanks fellas.....i think i'm almost there with a decision.

I've done about as much research on tyres to last me a lifetime and have made a decision.I'm going with the Falkens in 235/35 19 on 8.5" rims as i think i will have less clearance issues and won't have to massage anything.I just have lowered springs and not coilovers so i think this is the best option for me.

I plan to get the wheels next week but this Friday might be a goer if i can squeeze some time into my schedule. When i do get them i will clean my humble sv8 and present some pics in the My Ride/Your Ride section.

Now the search for drag radials begins

Darren, sounds like the 235's are the safer bet for stock front strut clearance :). When I had 245/35/19 FK-452, I also had my coilovers, but was able to still run max camber adjustment i.e. just shy of 3* neg, without fouling the strut.

WOMBIE
01-05-2008, 05:34 AM
Your right about the safer option...i just didn't want any issues.I know if i pushed the boundaries with 245's and had a problem down the track,it
would have taken away from the enjoyment of having getting them in the first place.

I've waited 4 years to get rims of any sort and it's taken awhile to make a decision on tyres but i'm more than happy to go this way :)

Darren,

I had 245/35/19 Falken FK-452s on VX GTS rims on my VYIISS ... considerably lowered too;

http://www.oz8.org/gallery/albums/NickS/DSC06327.jpg

Never had a single issue with clearance mate, the guards weren't rolled and I wasn't running coilovers either. I don't see that there should be any issue with the 245's.

Just a thought ...

Sounds like a good decision to me.
It always amazes me that many young blokes spend a fortune on their pride and joy with heaps of go-faster look-better stuff - they lower them and fit fancy suspensions, fat wheels............and then go and put the cheapest crap tyres that they can buy....
I believe that it doesn't matter how well your car handles, how good the brakes are, how good the driver is....if it's got crap tyres they still hit the scenery very easily, and usually when you are least expecting it, like in the wet or in an emergency....
So - good call. I've found the Falkens to be pretty good too. :)

WOMBIE
01-05-2008, 12:14 PM
Nick....just call me ultra conservative or scared even

But seriously it's the offset on these rims that may have been an issue and after all,i got some inside info from Steve (GMMAD) who runs XHP's on his ride.Even the the place i'm getting them from recommended the 235's which was cool i thought. They could of grabbed the extra coin if they wanted to but gave me great advice instead :)

And your right there seldo about running crap tyres. It's like when i got a cam install done and ran the oem brakes for a while  I won't be doing things backward again.

I first noticed these rims but in full chrome on Steve's white vx ss and while i thought they suited his ride beautifully,i kept thinking it was too much for a red car.But when i saw these puppies i just thought yep.....that's what i want!

I went through this same decision process not long ago. I had the 19s I wanted picked out and priced but I found the serious performance tyres available too limited to proceed with this size wheel. I have had a bad experience on crappy tyres and wont go down that path again. At least there does seem to be some decent options in 19s in this thread but I didn't want to run separate tyres for the drags so I stuck with my factory 18s and some sticky Toyo RA1 245 18s. Still I often see 19s with polished lips on Monaro's and think man they look good! So in the end I think its a personal choice.

Sounds like you made the right choice for your situation and I hope you enjoy the new rims :)

On the topic of you original dilemma, why sell the SV8 rims? They would be perfect for slapping some potenza RE55's on and using as dedicated track wheels. Being 17's, the RE55's would be a fare bit cheaper too.

From what I saw at the last private day at WSID, Eric had Gorilla nuts on his car and had forgotton the key. Those nuts then endured the beating of a lifetime to try and get them off, but with no success. Actually the lock nuts are still fine and in use. These are a top product. Would need some real tools to get them off sans key. $66 is uber cheap too. I bought mine from WheelKing Moorabbin (Vic) for ~$110 shipped, a couple of years ago. Though, I think I may invest in another key as I've almost lost it on several occasions now .

Mate start a thread if you like and get someone to photo shop both designs of wheel on your ride (and narrow down the other dozen down to about 2 or 3) and go from there. If not try and throw up some pics of what your looking at,either way you'll get some educated opinions from the boys here at TC.

Yea mate, not helping me :( ... VT-VZ have small front strut towers apparently. I ordered a whiteline strut brace last week hoping that stiffens up the front end before i try changing tyres. Another option is getting 245/30s, which MAY fit, but may also foul the strut. And even then no manufacturer makes them with the legal load rating and the tyres would be way too thin!

If the strut brace doesnt do a good enough job ill try the 245/35s and if they dont fit ill look into getting coilovers.... all for 10mm (and much better quality)!!!! damn!:headbang:
