View Full Version : diff gears vs stall converter
I have 3.46 diff gears in the ss at the moment and i was wondering to get more low down torque should i go up to 3.7 diff gears (i don't won't to go any higher as i do a lot of hwy driving)or should i get a 2800-3000 stall converter?I will be doing a bit of circuit racing as well as running down the 1/4 mile wsid.So i was wondering can i have both or should i just get the diff gears?

Absolutely you can have both. Stallies are more suited for drag racing, giving you awesome launch capability; and they keep the revs higher during your run. A 3500 stallie netted me almost half a second over the quarter mile (essentially due to better launch). There is a misconception that stallies make our cars harder to drive; however a medium sized stall converter actually enhances the drive if you ask me, smooths out the power delivery (and no brutal snappy gear changes). I loved my stallie (I had a VY Ute previously).
This graphic gives you an idea of the comparison of a stock stall vs a high stall converter 1/4 mile run (however this is a larger converter):

However if you are want to try circuit, I would go the diff gears first. I think the diff gears will give you better aceleration in-between the twisty bits at the track, the stally will probably be more of a hindrance on a circuit. FWIW I wouldnt go any bigger than say a 3000 stall if you want to do regular circuit.
