View Full Version : AP Racing 350mm Replacement Rotors?
I've been using the HSV 350mm/330mm "Surplus" brake kit for a while now and it's been awesome. I must have done at least 15 track days with them thus far but the front rotors are looking a bit tired/crazed now. They'll last a few more track days but they will need replacing eventually.
What are the options? Genuine AP rotors only? Anyone know what the going rate $$ is for the front 350mm rotors?

Can't help with costs/prices but I do know that DBA are now making DBA4000 & DBA5000(2 piece) 350/330mm rotors for the AP 4 piston setup in our cars now.

Dunc, are they a two piece rotor? I think from memory 362mm rotor without hat was about $750 each for AP rotors a couple of yrs ago.
You could try Matt at race brakes Sydney at Wetheral Park, or V-Sport at Arndell Park.
Just a thought,
Those packages were a good deal! would be interesting to see what % of the total cost just for 4 rotors. It might be like a Makita cordless drill that has shot batts, to buy two batts would cost about 80% of the initial cost for the complete set and maybe sell off the other kit and avoid overhauling the calipers.

If the kit was still $2700 i would consider it. Now at $3300 i am not sure. I heard the 350mm rotors are about $400 each (AP's) so x 4 = $1600. A set of pads is about $450 so there's $2050. I'd be left with 4 calipers for $1300 (still not bad) i wouldnt mind a spare front and back.. but i woudl be stuck with odd calipers.
If DBA make a 5000 350mm rotor i might be tempted to try that.

I've had bad experiences with DBA 4000's, so when mine need time for replacing, depending on cost, either genuine AP or try the 5000's.
I couldnt find the part number on the regular clubbie section but it's coming up under other VZ cars (Skaife Senator, HSVDT Clubsport etc)

Still a very good buy for $3300 IMO if your comparing to Harrop for anyone in the market.
Dunc, what do you mean by "but i would be stuck with odd calipers", wont they be the same as a new kit hence the spares?? or do you mean 1 front caliper and 1 rear caliper as spare? i thought they only suited one side (i could be wrong), are the pistons different sizes?
Also looking at the slots the AP's look like they have more, which might suit track duties better, but if the DBA 5000 are cheaper and provide the same or better performance it could be an alternative, would be interested to hear feedback if you do use the DBA's or anyone else that has tried them.

I recall dattoman on ls1 also stating that the above was the correct price for oem ap items.

Dunc/Erik if this is the kit you have the $400-$450/pair does sound right for one piece rotors, the $1200/pair sound more like the two piece genuine AP or DBA two piece rotors.
http://www.vsport.com.au/ecommerce/index.php?categoryID=104
Are those rotors made by AP or are they to suit "AP Cailiper package" and could possibly be made by DBA or RDA etc on contract to Holden/HSV??
It would appear the DBA 5000 are available as stewies also has them advertised on his ebay shop.
That's the kit we have, apparently the rotors are genuine AP but i could be wrong.
The $1200 / pair quote - i confirmed with the ebay seller, and it is for single piece rotors (not two). So that was odd, a few hundred more than what we thought.

Yep, I get mine very lightly skimmed every second track day. That also lets me lay down a completely fresh pad material transfer. Sometimes, the cracks are only in the transfer material too, but if still evident when it has all worn away from normal driving, then yep just a surface skim should fix it up.

Ok thats good i have one person who appreciates good service ($100 in the post VooDoo) With the brake pads I would have to see them because i would hate to think i sent you the wrong pads you paid for.DS2500 and DS3000 pads have the same part number for the pad shape but the letter on the end of the part number which is either a " H " or a " R " determines the material.
eg :FRP216H would be DS2500 and FRP216R would be DS3000.The brake pads and pad box will have the number stamped on it so check that against each other and the invoice and PM or email me if there is an issue.
Have done the rotors before and have worked fine but never pads. With the introduction over the years of the DBA4000 and 5000 series we haven't done any for a long time.

$247.50 per rotor in the DBA4000 slotted range.Brake pads would be between $80 to $220 a set depending on the type you want.Regarding the upgrade i am looking at doing a 362mm two - piece rotor and bracket with that caliper but haven't pulled my finger out yet.If you are interested let me know and i will speed things up.

No, just from the temps I took when i was racing with them they get very hot and take a while to cool down. I never had a compare with one and two piece DBAs. I regularly saw over 550 degrees just from general circuit 3 lappers.
Just saying some simple cooling would help these work better in fact any brakes. I would recommend getting ducts put in. $50 a side with cheap hose.
I only used the one piece Harrop with the stock GTS brakes and they did not last at all but they were drilled so they cracked.

The 343mm 2 piece DBA slotted rotors are $550 each. These rotors will run cooler being lighter and the fact they have a alloy hat that will disperse heat quicker and not a heavy cast centre which will retain the heat for longer. And yes ducting on any car will help a lot but don't run it to the face of the rotor but to the hub centre.

THERE ARE QUITE A FEW COMPANIES STATE SIDE THAT ARE DOING BIG BRAKE KITS FOR THAT VERY FAMILIAR SHAPED PONTIAC GTO. AS MOST OF YOU KNOW THEY STILL RUN ALL THE SAME STUD PATTERN 5X120
NOT THE 5X120.65 LIKE THE MAJORITY OF THE US GM FAMILY. AND THE GTO'S OFFSETS ECT ARE ALL THE SAME AS THE MIGHTY MONARO.
WILLWOOD OFFER A 2 PIECE ROTOR PART #140-9296 WHICH I'M PRETTY SURE IS A PERFECT REPLACEMENT FOR THE O/E AP ROTORS. MOST OF THE AP RACING/WILLWOOD/BAER ROTORS ARE INTERCHANGEABLE WHITH EACH OTHERS HATS TO IN THE 2 PIECE DESIGNS.
BAER BRAKES ALSO DO A SIMILLAR BRAKE PACKAGE.
AS DO STOPTECH AND ALL THESE COMPANIES OFFER 2 PIECE ROTORS FOR THE GTO UP TO AND OVER 355MM.
THE BEST PART IS THE PRICES.
I CAN LOOK INTO THIS A LITTLE MORE IF ANYONE WISHES.
I DO REGULAR TRIPS TO THE STATES AND SHIP STUFF BACK ALL THE TIME.
i'LL BE GOING OVER AGAIN IN A FEW WEEKS MIGHT BE DOING A BULK BUY ON ET STREETS.
THATS MY 2 CENTS WORTH
CHEERS TO ALL:cheers:

Not really an answer but from stock original fronts from Harrop weigh 13kg 343mm. DBA 5000 with hub are just on 10kg. Correct me if i am wrong.
Original backs from harrop weigh 9kg. DBA one piece 4000 are 7.5kg. Note only 315mm not the 343mm like the fronts.

That sounds right but as DBA do not do a 1 piece front 343mm rotor i can't confirm the weight.

Thanks for the info Matt. Thankfully, I don't need them yet, but won't be too long.

Asking me about these rotors is like asking Colonial Sanders if the chicken from the local takeaway shop is any good (lol)but I really think you answered your own question above.I can tell you they are not DBA rotors. On the other hand there is a argument that could be started because there are many who i have talked to who do not like or agree to the plated rotor as it has been proven to retain the heat longer than a unplated rotor and surely when the pad rubs the plating off it has to contaminate the pad to some degree.Plating of the rotor is only done to stop the rust from making the rotor look ugly.

Matt - Do you think the VZ AP Kit that Holmart etc are flogging at the moment would be enough on an I.P car ? Specifically a VT / VX ?
If not, what would you recommend ?
Cheers,
Paul...

There are a few different types of rotors used with different bolt pcd's but i assume the rotors are 375mm x 36mm ? The price on hats depend on what type of bolt up it is as some are a floating type and some are just a bolt up.The other question is if they are 36mm thick what calipers are you going to use ?

They would work and DBA now have the 2 piece front disc which would help. The price certainly makes them attractive and affordable but to be honest they would not be my first choice as there are better quality calipers and kits out there but these will cost more though. Here are a few things to ponder :You have to have 18" wheels for starters and the caliper and bracket is all 1 part so if you break a mount you need to buy a complete caliper which may be hard to do.
You could still use AP Calipers but there are stronger calipers which have less flex and more pad surface area but a better optioned front and rear kit with racing pads could cost you from $6000 to $8500 depending on 4 or 6 piston, rotor size and pad brand. With a full race orientated kit you could easily spend from $10500 up to $30000 .
I hope i haven't scared you away but if you are only out to have fun then the cheaper option may be the first choice and then you can always sell them and upgrade later if you find you need to.

I would just like to let you know i have received 2 more sets of the 2 piece 350mm front slotted rotors to replace the 1 piece rotor on the AP HSV 4 pot kits. The rotors are still $505 each as they are from the original order i placed 2-3 months ago.
PS.I also have the 362mm and 343mm rotors from the HSV 6 pot kit.
