Starting to prep the body work, it was in pretty ordinary shape when I got it, paint was peeling and oxidised on roof and bonnet, numerous dents here and there.

The finished product (well almost!)
Its taken me 2 years to get this far, and it's almost finished. I still need to mount passenger seat and belts, rewire the low and park circuts, number plate light circut and front indicators (these were removed to save weight and were not needed as it was a full time track car). And work out why it won't crank over, but I think I almost have that sorted. And remove the pain in the arse window tint! Hopefully I will get this all done and get rego next weekend!

Btw whats the deal with rego and a cage, is that ok?

Yeah it sure will be fun, will be interesting to drive to and from work. Look forward to giving some HSV owners a surprise!

I have done pretty much everything bar the motor and weld the cage in myself. Its better that way! As for rego, the cage was engineered in 2005 prior to the rule changes in regards to cages.

The bonnet now shuts with the ram tubes, cut them down this afternoon at work. Also made a mount for the rear vision mirror. Sorted out the starter issue, there is an andersen plug which connects the starter and alternator into the main loom of the car, the plastic surround of the clip was broken, causing a bad connection. Just need to hard wire the starter and alternator and it will be all good.
Maybe I will be done this weekend!

Thanks!
It was being built for IP, but with the rising fuel costs, Im going to be running it as my daily :D Dry weight should be around the 750 mark or so, its had a fair bit of weight taken out. Engine will make around 130hp atw or so with a decent airbox once I make it. Hasnt been for a tune yet, I still need to run it in.

There is still a good 10-15 kilos in proof coate that could come off the underside yet, but as its now a daily I didnt want to go that far. Just need plenty of tightening of the nut behind the wheel!

Well I did some more today.
I've now got the dash working properly, it now shows RPM, Speed, Oil temp and pressure, water temp and fuel level. I've rewired all the main battery cables and starter cables, and tidied a lot of stuff up. Mounted the passenger seat an harness.
It now idles smoothy, though it is a bit lumpy. Still need to fit the cat and most likely another muffler and resonator, as its way too loud at the moment. I drove it round the block a couple of times this afternoon, the tune is still way off, its really boggy down low, but once it passes about 4 grand it really takes off. Can't wait to get it tuned and regoed!

Another update, still not finished!
Got the cat done on Friday while I had a day off. I used a magna flo 2 1/2 stainless core cat.

Managed to get some time in on it today to sort a few issues out between the showers!
Changed the alternator as the previous one was charging at 18v. Will need to reco either one as this one is not charging at all. Murphys law.
Resealed sump as was its leaking. Pain in the arse, hopefully fixed properly now!
Going to get tuned on Thursday night by Phil Armour, so should have a power figure finally and able to be driven!

Well back from the dyno session a few days ago. A little disapointed by the end HP figure, but we all know torque wins races. Was expecting it to be low due to the need to run the cat, and the motor being fresh, only running for about 20 mins before it was tuned. Ended up with 103.8hp atw. Like I said, other engines of the same spec make around 125-130. More than happy though with the torque figure, pretty much constant from 4000-8800 limiter.
Anyway to the dyno graph:

Mate i've been following this thread and as far as i can tell with my very limited knowledge of such builds, you have achieved a hell of a lot in such a short space of time and i really hope you get the results.Imho given your commitment to your project, you shall richly deserve all that comes your way at the track!

Thanks for the kind words mate! After all the problems I have encountered from the start, its going to be well worth it in a few weeks time! I'm just hoping that I can get a cold start tune done on it before I take it to wakefield, its a royal pain in the arse to start at the moment, it takes a good 10 mins of cranking to get it to go!

I have been given the ok to keep it as a track only car now, going to get another GTi as a daily.
Spent the better part of yesterday afternoon working on it again, once again in between showers.
Found a massive leak in the passenger side, I'll need to seal that up with some alloy plate and sika flex.
Its pretty much finished now, only minor things left, wheel alignment (which I will do tomorrow), few more stickers and remount the window net.
Got un unregistered permit for it, so I now have the OK to drive it on the road till the end of the month. Took it for the first decent drive yesterday, anyone who knows the area, I went down to Avon dam, has a nice road down there!
Fixed the oil pressure sender problem from the dyno, used speedflow fittings and -3 teflon lined hose, and remote mounted the sender, I still need to make a decent bracket to mount this to.
Made a battery mount, just used some 1/4inch booker rod and nyloc nuts, through the floor to 6mm alloy bar and nylocks with washers underneath.
Got some 13inch wheels to fit my A048's to, still need to be powdercoated but wont have money or time for that for a while.
Pics up shortly!

Awesome job! Must be very satisfying to have finished it given how much time and effort you've put into it.
What's the deal with the unregistered vehicle permit though?

Yeah mate, I might do one or two next year depending on how money goes. OP is only 15 mins down the road, and WP about an hour, so its nice and close. Will be at most rounds watching anyway.
Met John at Wakefield on Thursday, nice Evo! The thing is QUICK! I managed a 1:16.03, which is a bit slow, but I need to sharpen my skills, haven't driven in over a year, and never driven this car before. I need to change the phantom grip diff back to a welded centre. This will save a few seconds a lap.
Will be going back on the 2nd december, see if I can get into the 12's.

Went to the new track at Marulan on the weekend, had a blast! Great track and great layout, will get better as time goes by. Don't listen to what people have been saying on the net, get out there and have a go yourself!
Had a bit of an off, over cooked it into the second corner and ran off into the infield, ended up pushing the bottom radiator support back into the extractors, I managed to hit a small ditch, which slowed me down pretty quick!
Looking at the data out of the dash, I entered the corner 5km/h faster, and braked 2/10th second later than the last lap, so locked up and speared off. Data also shows I went from 99km/h to 9.7km/h in 0.7 seconds. I've got a bit of a sore neck today, but I will live.
I towed the car to work this morning and pulled it apart before I started for the day, I actually managed to disloge the radiator support on the passenger side. All fairly minimal and easy to repair. I'm thinking that I might replace it with a 50x50 RHS box section.
Anyway some pics:

You can just see how it tore the weld out on the right hand side of the radiator support.
Quick Vid for you guys to see what it sounds like:

Ended up doing about 43 laps within half a second of each other, so I was pretty stoked. Can't wait to get back out there in the dry!

So does GW own that as well as an interest in Wakefield Park or has he sold his stake in Wakefield?
Interesting and certainly worth checking out.

I think GW has ceased his stake/interest in Wakefield Park when it was sold not long ago. Last i heard there were some issues with the new track, and agreements about operating within x k's of Wakefield etc etc. But anyway it's obviously up and running now? cool.

Got some photos from the hillclimb on the weekend. Was a GREAT event, bit disorganised and was dissapointed in the timing (they only timed to full seconds, no 10'th's or 100'th's!), but the drive itself MORE than made up for it.
For anyone who hasn't heard of it before, Buledelah Hillclimb is a closed section of the Old Pacific Highway (now known as Wooton Way). Its just over 1km long, 3lanes wide and has 5 long sweeping bends, both on and off camber.
I ended up running in Touring Cars under 1300cc, this was combined with Improved Production under 1600cc due to low entry's. All up there was 46 entry's, with every thing from open wheelers, to a BF GT falcon, to a 3 banger stock standard charade. And then there was me in the swift! I ended up with a time of 39 seconds, which was good enough to take the class win, and 20th outright.
It was a cold morning!

What sort of files / format have you got? If you have a windows PC, you could try Windows movie maker - it's pretty basic but usually good enough for simple editing (and it's free).

They are *.mov files. I tried movie maker but couldn't work out how to use it. I'll give it another go today on my wife's computer, she has some editing software on it.

Worked out movie maker won't read .mov files, so I downloaded some compression software, forgive the watermarks but my net is too slow to upload the big files, they are almost 500 meg each.
Anyway this is my last run, which was 39 seconds.

I've also started making a foam mould for an airbox, which I will be making from carbon fibre. You pretty much shape the foam to what you want then lay the carbon or glass up over the top. After its had time to dry, you pour acetone into the mould to disolve the foam and pour the mix out.

It just a breathtaking bit of road!
