Muncha

It all started in late November when i had a look at the new VE ute's, after a test drive and a closer look i traded in my rodeo and became the
owner of a white VE ssv ute.

The plan was to keep it stock while i was doing up another car but after seeing what was possible with minimal mods i just couldn't help myself.
Now i am going after the VE bolt on record, after that i may fit a turbo or two or a cam.

Make- VE
Model- Commodore SSv M6 6L
Body- Ute
Year- 07

Mods-
1 7/8 headers
twin 3inch exhaust
CHE otr
custom mafless tune
Tex Z grip clutch, VZ slave cylinder
25% udp
HSV 3.7 diff
lowered springs
Bilstein shocks in rear to stop axle tramp

Planned Mods-
Will be fitting VE omega spec rear brakes soon so i can fit 16 inch wheels for drag racing,
apart from that maybe some bigger wheels and brakes when i am done racing it.

1/4 Times-
Stock- 13.172@104.56mph
Bolt on mods with street tires- 13.043@111.70

Coming along quite nicely. So when's the debut with the slicks on?

Muncha

Should be next week, might take a few meets to get used to them.

Duffman
15-08-2008, 07:20 PM
Good luck with it :) I'm sure the guys at CHE would have been able to give you plenty of advice given their experience

And thanks to this new forum section you have your very own thread to post your results

Muncha

Yeah Dale from CHE has given advice on how to launch etc

Dale-just remember don't come off that clutch until she is bouncing on the limiter :D

Should be interesting.

Good luck with it Muncha, you've got your work cut out for you chasing Mick but if you can get it to come together like your 13.1 stocker run you'll make a good go of it....im tired of him telling me how good he is, beat him..pleeease! .

So the first time on slicks tonight was good, went 12.466@110mph (left lane).

The best 60' i got was a 1.687.

Im sure there is a bit more in it in the 60' and the shifting could be a bit quicker.

Dam it good fun launching on the slicks, cant wait for next week. :driving:

What was your highest MPH?

They are DOT slicks, and the 12.6@110mph was in the right lane not left.

Highest mph was 111.7 in the left lane on a 12.7, lower than what i was expecting.

Yeah i got the 2 16' wheels, 2 callipers and 2 discs for $340 from NVU.

I got a bargain from them $211 landed here in tassie for the brake set-up and got the wheels at Beaurepairs for $30 with tyres fitted.

Mate if I can get anywhere near that 12.4 I will be stoked. What was your weight if you don't mind me asking?

Cheers Rob

Muncha
26-08-2008, 05:11 PM
Stock it weighed about 1790kgs with a full tank and the stock wheels at the track.

On the 12.4@110mph it was about 3/4 tank, and maybe 50kgs lighter because of the wheels.

I will try to get it weighed again tomorrow at the track with out the spare and with just over a 1/4 tank of fuel.

Results from Wednesday-

1st- 12.538@112mph new pb mph.

2nd- 1265@108 not enough revs of the line, bogged a bit.

3rd- 12.77@111mph bogged again.

4th- 13.38@108 missed 3rd gear.

5th- 12.63@109mph need more revs.

6th- 12.48@109 more revs needed.

I am shifting to early and not giving it enough revs of the line, more practise is needed.

The rpm gauge is hard to read when i am racing, i am thinking about getting a shift light if i can find one that is not noticeable to much and doesn't look to ricey.

Muncha

Yeah it does but they are as bright as they will go. I think i may just not be used to how fast it gets to red line in first with the slicks and am trying to change it to soon, if that makes any sense.

The diff is starting to singe wheel in the burnout as well. :(

If you hold down the brightness adjusters (both + and - together for a second or so) it turns of all lights in the car except for the tacho ... might help ?

Good work though mate, very impressive. I find the the variation in mph between 108 & 112 interesting, some swear blind that mph is always the same regardless of how you launch ...

Id be interested to see which lane he was in for each run as well, 1 often reads higher than the other....so much for accuracy....the timing boards havent even been working for ages now, it makes it pretty shit as a spectator when you dont know what the cars are running :soap:

Well last night was a bit disappointing, the diff is worn out and it stopped going into gears properly.

Still got a best of 12.6@112mph.

I got some videos as well, they came out alright considering i was using my phone.

12.6@112mph

I will post the other vids later tonight.

Not sure if i am going to spend the money on the diff and ripshift or buy a ls1 and stick it in a VS and race that.

Went out for a couple of runs again last night, i think i may be addicted. :eyes:

Best was a 12.70 as the car is bogging down still off the line, even when leaving off the limiter.

If i slip it it just over heats and doesn't go into gears properly.

I might strip the interior and tray liner and see how it goes.

Cool vids!

i have that same problem with (very) high RPM / heated gearbox gear changes Cary. It just wont go into gear. I can drive around it on the circuit (shoft-shift) - i am sure it is costing me time - but it's moreso a death sentence for the 1/4 mile results. Hope you get it sorted. Which clutch are you running?

Muncha
02-10-2008, 07:54 PM
I am running the Z grip.

I will be getting a piece of hose that comes off the clutch bleeder to the firewall so i can bleed the clutch before i go to the track, hopefully the fresh fluid will help it.

Those remote bleeders are great.

I dont think it's going to help with high-rpm issue though (fresh fluid that is). Anyway didnt with me. We've bled the mofo at least a dozen times on my setup anyway.

Went out again this week, got 7 runs in. They have started the Friday meets for ANDRA members again and it seems like the Wednesday meets are a fair bit quieter.

Managed to improve my pb to a 12.448@113.41mph, with a 1.72 60'.

Wont be back out for about a month, when i go back i should have a ripshift fitted, the stock flywheel and clutch bleeder installed and maybe a harrop lsd centre.

If i can get it done on time i will be at the Wakefield day as well.

Suppose i should look into a PS cooler also.

In regards to the PS cooler, i've got an extra brand new PWR one left over from the group buy a while back. If you want it it's yours. And if you feel the need to give me a case of beer in exchange then so be it

I finally got back out to the track yesterday after CHE fitted a ripshift and remote clutch bleeder last week.

The first run was good with a new pb of 12.41.

Second run it spun a bit off the line but i had just over 20psi in the tires. Ended up with a 12.44.

Third run it wouldn't go into 4th, still went 12.7.

Forth run it wouldn't go into 3rd, went 13.0.

The shifter feels good but i didn't get a chance to bleed the clutch, i will replace the fluid for next week and hopefully it will help with the gear selection issues.

Did a bit of hot lapping tonight as there was only 15 cars out there.

Went 12.64, 14.2, 12.62, 12.54, 12.51, 12.50, 12.42, and 12.47 before it started to rain just after 8pm.

Towards the end the clutch was staying low, but with fresh fluid it seemed to handle the abuse a bit better.

Might start bracket racing just have to work on my lights a bit and i will be there.

Done 106 passas now.

Muncha
18-02-2009, 10:30 PM
6 more passes tonight, new pb of 12.376 with a 1.722 60', only about .65 to go.

No tune yet, some time this week hopefully. I just felt a bit different driving it.

Muncha
04-03-2009, 10:26 PM
Went to CHE to see if the new OTR needed any changes in the tune, apparently it needed a little bit of fuel somewhere but it still made 275rwkw so no real gains there.

At the track things were a bit different. First pass 12.45, then 12.33,then 12.27 then a 12.25. So it gained just over a tenth at the track, mph was only .5-1 higher.

I didn't have any tools on me so i couldn't take the filter out, i will take it out next week and see if i can get a little bit more out of it.

Busy night last night, i didn't get there until about 6 and with the last few weeks being canceled with rain it was packed.

First run, they were running a pro tree and i was concentrating on the tree more then the launch - 12.38@113.

Second pass, same as above. Went a bit better with a 12.30@113.

Third i forgot about the tree and concentrated on the launch a bit more. It went 1.70 to the 60, but wouldn't go into forth gear and ended up with a 13.0.

It is still a bit over tyred with the slicks so i bought some of these,

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x308/Muncha81/VE/P060409_1609.jpg

Hopefully they will help me get a bit more wheel speed off the line and stop it bogging down.

Might even have a new intake if i can find some time and it makes more power. :)

Good work Cary acquiring the radials, they will work better fr your application i reckon.

Muncha
16-04-2009, 04:47 PM
Tried out the radials last night. In full street trim with the 19s on the front and the spare, jack and air filter still fitted.

First run i didn't have enough revs in the burnout and it single wheeled a bit, got to the line and it spun/tramped a bit to a
12.57@110mph with a 1.77 60'.

Second run was a bit better 12.55@111mph with a 1.79 60'.

Third was a 12.49@110mph with a 1.74 60'.

Forth was a 12.62@111mph with a 1.84 60'.

The radials are a lot harder on the car than the slicks. It was a lot harder to do a decent burnout as the diff was
single wheeling on most runs resulting in one wheel spinning/tramping a little bit of the line. I now know why Mick went through so many diffs. :)

Next week i will try it with the front runners and spare etc removed. It really needs a new LSD if i continue to run these tires.

Future mods- Fix diff, fit stock suspension, 350 shot of nos. :D

The slicks i have are a bit to much for my current power level. It was hard to get it off the line without it bogging down.

Also i had to drive to the track, change all 4 wheels, race, change the wheels back and drive home. I was getting a bit over it.

Last night i drove to the track, raced and drove home. Soooo much easier. :D

After fitting a shift light in the weekend i went out to the track for a change yesterday.

I has helped with consistency a fair bit. First run was a 12.325@112.21, second was a 12.322@112.21. Third run i upped the shift light by 100rpm and hit the limiter in first, still went 12.42@@111.9. Forth well blah. Bracket racing to start soon. :)

CHE also fitted one of there new OTR's for me to try out, happy with the results so far.

Kinda disappointed with how things went today.

I got there just after 12pm thinking it would be packed, it wasn't so yay. :)

I flushed the clutch fluid out yesterday, hoping it would help out with gear changes, unfortunately i haven't had a chance to get any decent fluid so i used castrol sumshit dot4 or something. The rest of the bottle will be going in the bin.

First pass, took of good, all going ok until forth gear when it just wouldn't go in. Ran a 12.8ish

Second pass, first gear was ok, went to select second and it wouldn't go in, ended up with a 18.3 or so. :D

I left the car for about a hour to cool down hoping it would help.

Came back and on the third pass it went 12.454@112.99, looked promising. From there it went 12.57@112, 12.39@113, 12.72@113- 2.04 60' car rolled forward when i brought the revs up, 12.81@104 no forth gear, 12.66@111, 12.75@111, 12.46@113.2.

On the last few runs there was a loud banging sound when i took off, I went for one more but it sounded real bad so aborted the final pass.

I think i have killed the diff or a driveshaft, it still drove home fine but under load with the MT's it wasn't happy.

I have vids of the last 2 complete passes, the first vid is the final pass - 12.46. I had to do gay small burnouts to keep the clutch happy.

Check out the hectic shift light. Listen for the bang just before i pass the tree.

After a quick look today it looks like i have killed the LSD. I will be getting a harrop tru-track within the next few weeks and maybe a few other little touch ups for the drag day......

You have to admit cary the old lsd held up pretty well to the umpteen passes youve thrown at it, not a bad return really. Harrop Trutrac is a good upgrade IMO.

Yep i agree, it has lasted over 100 passes. Not bad for a factory part.

Got my ute back today from Castle Hill Performance.

They fitted a Harrop Tru-track LSD centre and also fitted a set of stock springs for me, it looks like a 4wd now. :)

On Saturday i will be giving it a final once over and putting it on a bit of a diet to try to get that 11.999999.

Wax it. the reduced drag coefficient will get you into the 11's LOL

Good idea, might scrape of all the rubber that is under the rear bar, a few kgs there.

How serious you getting with weight reduction? are you like taking the hard lid and tailgate off and pass seat out etc of just making sure you don't have any old maccas behind the seat?

Yep I'm talking tailgate, tray liner, pass seat, spare, jack/tools and anything else that isn't necessary.

See you on Sunday Wombie, it is shaping up to be a great day.

Entered my first bracket meet which is on tomorrow.

It will be the first time back to the track with the harrop trutrack and the stock suspension.

I have 2 qualifying runs and then hopefully i will be able to go a few rounds. I have lowered my shift light to about 5700rpm to try to get it consistent and hopefully it wont put as much strain on the clutch and gearbox so it can get into gears better.

I don't think it will go near my pb but it will be interesting to see how it goes off the line with the new suspension.

Updates to come tomorrow night. :)

No updates.

ANDRA wouldn't let me race, they say the space saver wheels are not allowed to be used anymore.

ME = Very happy at the moment. :rocket:

Went out for a spin at the track yesterday, no front runners yet so i was running in full street trim.

Managed to get in 6 runs, there was a few delays as well so more were possible.

Ended up with a best of 12.68, which improves my street trim pb from the private day of a 12.8.

I also managed to get a few vids, this is the second last run up against a turbo VY it ran a 12.4@129, maybe the guys at Russo performance can give us more info on it?
