Thanks guys, this summer I'm going to just concetrate on the drags thats why I'm putting the turbo 400 in.

The best 60" in that video was 1.51, its just my gear changes that suck.

The gear changes don't appear bad!
What rear shocks/springs were you using in the rear and what rpm do you launch at and do you slip or dump the clutch? just asking cause i'm so bad at launching my m6 ute.

What sort of RWKW you getting?
Im running a 237/242@112 cam with 603/609 lift and YT roller rocker in my 408 with some ported L76 heads although i might look at some ET's when i throw the supercharger on. Its in for a final tune but we are aiming for 380-400rwkw with the current combo.
Very tough ute Saj. How loud is it?

I put the standard FE2 springs and shocks in the rear for the drags. As the lights count down i try to be right on the take up point of the clutch and then come off it quickly ( not dumping ) with a bit of clutch slip. It didnt allways work as sometimes it creept on the line ( thinking now i should of used the hand brake ) or i came off it to hard and blew the tyres of it. I tryed to leave at about 4800 rpm but data logging showed i was all over the place. :)

I dont put much credence in dynos as i've seen it lose and gain a fair bit of power just days apart on dynos with no changes but around 500rwhp would be in the ball park.
Are you thinking of going the cathedral port or LS7 port ET's ?

Currently run a LS3 manifold on the L76 heads so if i go ET's then they will be LS7 style. Ive looked for info on LS3 vs LS7 manifolds but cant really see anyone thats done any real testing yet.

Did you 60's change much between the fe2 suspension and the bilstein/Lovell set up?
How wide are the slicks?
Are you going to run a trans brake with the t400?

The slicks are 26.0/10.0/15. I tried an 8 inch slick but couldn't get it to hook up. The best 60" i got with the lovell/Bilstein set up was 1.75 but that was mainly because i had the rear set up with 2.5 degree negative camber for the circuit and as it squatted off the line it rolled the tyre onto the inner edge. When i put the FE2 back in we set it up with 1 degree positive camber so it got a nice flat foot print when it squatted off the line. This drag racing caper is all new to me so that set up mite be the totally wrong way to go.
We talked about a trans brake but decided it would probably rip the rear end apart.

great looking cage, who made it? is it road legal with thoses side intrusion bars?
Mounting the rear braces through the parcel shelf to the body/chassis is really the only way it should be done in a ute.
Pete from textralia will be doing my cage in the ute in the next few months, theirs is braced the same way into the back and they are also widening the rear wheel wells and modding the rear trailing arms aswell so i can get some wider rubber under her.
your utes coming together nicely:bravo: :bravo:
The cage was done by Race on custom. I doubt the cage is street legal but i didn't have much choice with the intrusion bars as to be ANDRA legal for nines it has to be welded in not bolted. It wont run a nine in this set up but you never know whats around the corner so i'm making sure its legal to run nines from the start which mite save me money in the long run if i go down that road. What size tyre are you thinking of running on the rear?

Now to bring it home to paint the cage, fit longer wheel studs, CV's and axles and try to put the interior back together.
Finally got it back together, ANDRA tec inspected and went to do a few passes today. We've found the converter is way to tight ( flashing to 2700rpm only ) but managed a 10.49@132. The converter has to come back out now which is a pain in the arse but i still left the track happy with the times so far. :)

I didn't get any footage as i was still putting it together 5 mins before i was supposed to be there so i forgot the camera (next time). It still had my circuit setup in the front and was in dire need of a rear wheel alignment but i just ran out of time. I didn't even get chance to wash it from what it looked like in the earlier photos so it was a bit embarrassing, at least most of the dust blew off on the way there. :)

I took the ute to the track last Wednesday in street trim with 235/60/15 ET streets on and between showers got a couple of runs in. The track was shit so i had to just ease it off the line and got a best of 10.73@130 mph.

Back to race trim I borrowed a converter for the weekend while mine gets sent off to be redone but constant shifter problems meant i tagged the limiter or found neutral on most runs. The best i managed on the day was 10.45@131.
I weighed the car in race trim and it weighed 1546 kgs with driver.

Hey Saj,
I know you're not doing it anymore, but how did you find your ute went out on the track? I'm unsure as to whether I should set mine up for track stuff given the size and amount of flex in the chassis in these things. Do you know if it's much worse than the sedans?
Any advice would be appreciated mate. Just a little unsure if I'd be wasting my time/money with a ute.

The utes are surprisingly good with pretty good weight distribution. I ran a simple and cheap set up of bilstein strut inserts and lovell springs in the front and bilstein shocks and lovell springs on new tyres and 2006 spec pedders saloon car springs ( softer ) on old tyres in the rear. I ran Whiteline adjustable sway bars front and rear with the front set at the second hardest setting and the rear set at its softest. I normally ran 4.5 degrees negative camber on the front and 3 degrees negative on the rear. The plus for a ute is you don't have the fuel tank behind the rear axle line but as it sits under the tray on the drivers side and with a full tank and a 100 kg driver on the right side of the car it makes it hard to set up as it handles very different left handers compared to rights. The other plus for a ute is they have the weight brake distribution valve under the rear so if you take the factory cable off and replace it with a fine link chain you can quickly and easily change you front to rear brake bias. You will need more rear brake bias than the factory cable gives to help settle the rear other wise there prone to turn in over steer. I only ran a 235 RE55 tyre because of cost but if you ran a bigger tyre or a slick you could stiffen the car up but with a small tyre on a low grip track like wanaroo you need it to be able to transfer weight other wise it just understeers on the way in and oversteers on the way out. To give you a idea how effective the utes can be here's a list of all the road registered cars that have done timed track days on the wannaroo short track.
http://www.nolimitevents.com/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?723
Cars 1,2,6,8,9,24,26 and 27 are all full targa cars that compete around Australia and New Zealand with my ute being at 23rd so with a few simple mods can be quite competitive. I hope that helps.
A bit of an update on the drags. I finally had a good day with no shifter problems and even made it though the first round of eliminations in super sedan for the first time. I put some second hand 90/10's in which helped get me a 1.49 60" but still doesn't get the big launch look like some get

In the second round i fcked up big time as the other car had a really bad light so i had a good lead coming to the line and braked but still broke out with a PB 10.37 on a 10.40 dial in.

Keep up the good work.
Thanks mate, where getting there slowly. I think there may be a 10.2X in it if i can get it together on a good track with some good air, time will tell but I've got a good feeling about it after the 10.37 on the brake. Bit of an update, made a few changes for friday and saturdays Top Alcohol meet. I put FE2 springs in the front, borrowed a 4.11 diff and trialed a Metalcraft prototype OTR. The air was the worst i've run in with a density altitude ranging between 1900 to 2950 feet but on the friday ran a new Pb of 10.36 @ 131 and then bettered it with a 10.34@131 and a new best MPH of 133.33 on sat after a tuning tweak by John from SQP. The only down side was i lost 60" time with the front springs, it looked better but was on average slower to the 60" all week end by 3-4/100th.

Awesome work saj yet again another pb, i puting my money on a 10.2 next time you go out to keep the trend going, must have some real good mid track grunt, with you doing 1.5 60ft and 131 mph for 10.3, mine doing 1.5 60 ft and 132 mph for a 10.7, would that be the weight difference or is there something else i should look at, cheers once again congrats...
Thanks Craig, its going to take someone a hell of a lot smarter than me to explain how that all works because i haven't got a clue. I still cant work out why some of my best half track MPH has resulted in my slowest top end MPH and why some awesome 660" times have resulted in dismal ETs. I'm starting to think drag racing is like a woman, there fun to play with but i'll probably never fully understand either. :sigh:

I think you need a set of my 8 rib billet pullies systems though :D
Edit: you in WA or QLD? (Metalcraft is listed in both http://www.metalcraft.com.au )

Any updates Saj , heard a rumour that you had a very good run at the WA LSX nats.:)
I ran the WA LSX Nationals with no changes from the last meeting. It ran a new PB of 10.32@131

Awesome work bud saw that 10.1 coming from miles away... i had an absoloute disaster of a day run one, fried the tires then gear box slipt in top ( 10.68 ) second run felt poo (10.65) so checked file and was running rich, as in no gas checked bottle was on 750psi bottle blanket had shit itself, fixed that got presure to 1100, launched off line felt strong as UNTIL bang ripped flex plate to pieces pulled the centre of it clean off the rest!!!will pull it apart this week and no doubt find more issues. only good thing about it is that it appears to have done a 10.65 with out gas..cause of the psi cut out on the bottle and the safety valve..will upload some pics of the damage when we start pulling it apart..once again congrats on the time oh yer it single wheeled one run aswell i about to give up..

That's a shame Craig, but don't give up. You just need it to all come together and it will be worth it, a 10.65 with out the gas is nothing to sneeze at. Hope there's not to much damage and your back out there soon.

Would it have anything to do with the suspension changes you made?
Would it have anything to do with the suspension changes you made?
No, I'm pretty sure its because i've put ET streets on for those passes so when it leaves the line it wheel spins badly and then just grips so it just shocks the axle.
With the slicks it a constant and progressive load with out the shock to the axle.
That's my guess, I could be wrong though but the only change to how i normaly run is the tyre.

If that shoulder isn't radiused properly it will create a weak spot where they will break almost on cue. It might be worthwhile comparing a few before installing some more...

I've decided on a plan of attack for next season.
I've got myself a new LS7 block, traded my ETP LS7 4.0s for some ETP LS7 4.1s, my new FAST LSXR 102 manifold should be here next week, sold my th400 and ordered a new th400 with a trans brake and all the goodies, ordered a 2 stage limiter, got some QA1 double adjustable drag shocks, got my Gforce billet outer stubs and ordered gforce 33 spline spool, 33 spline axles and level 3 Cv's.
The plan is to run my crank and rods for 427ci, use my cam, stud kit and anything else i can use from the old motor to keep costs down.
At the moment i'm still in the parts gathering stage but when it all starts to go together i'll get some pics up.

If i can get it to hook up i'm aiming for around the 9.7 mark. Its going to take some sorting out and could quite possabley start off slower than before but it should be just a case of fine tuning the whole thing and then just chipping away at the times.

I went to the track last night for a bit of tuning but the track was shit. I couldn't get the ute to hook up at all, just wheel spin through first and second with the best 60' I could manage was a 1.62.
I gave it up as a bad joke after 4 pass but it still went 10.051, 10.018, 10.015 and 10.000 all between 137-140 mph so with a half decent track it should hopefully be in the 9's.

Thanks mate, the track hasn't been preped yet. I put new tyres on it but until they prep the track for the first open meet i'm pushing shit up hill trying to run a decent 60", I could chase the track by softening the rear up but then I've just got to change it all back in a couple of weeks.
Here's a video of my semi-final run, an 9.89 on a 9.89 dail in.
Thanks to David( VYLS1Berlina ) for the video.

Well done shane that is awesome result specially a 9 out of a 1.5, be great to see the mid 9 when you get back in your normal 60ft times, keep us posted.
Managed to shave a couple of 100th of my pb with a 9.815.
Even though my 60ft times back in the 1.46s it still getting massive wheel spin so i've got to work out how to stuff a 28x10 inch tyre under the back and then change the diff ratio to suit.

Great work mate, it's flying now. I'd love to wedge a 28" tall slick under mine one day too.
Been a while since i updated this. I've been trying to get the 28" tyre to work. I changed to 4.11 gears again but i really need a 4.3 or 4.4 ratio with the tyre because its giving away to much rpm at the line but as 4.11 is as short as you can get for these diffs i'm sort of screwed.
Any way we've managed to finally get the time down to a 9.68@139.75.
