Thought I better start a new thread in the right area. For those that have not seen the old thread there is stacks of details on the above thread. It is just continued here
I took the roll cage out tonight. It took just on 45 minutes so that is not bad for the first time around. One fluke I noticed was the subframe bracing has left a corner gap just big enough to fit the front bolts into. Somehow I dont think Bond and BMR worked this one out but it could have been nasty for mounting points if it was not for some luck. The main hoop all I modified the plates a bit too to allow it to fit.
Those 90 degree air ratchets are great for this job. I brought one today as it looked like it might help and boy it did.
Race meet this sunday for lots of testing and feedback from the cage and subframe install.
Good stuff Listy - where is the meeting this weekend?

Hidden Valley for the normal monthly NAMSC round. Round 5 this Sunday. Second last for the year then a fun day at the end of November.
Good old buildup is here and the real heat has kicked in so hopefully all goes well with temps.

Also a mate gave me his ROH 17x8 of his car finally. They are +26 offset so now I can put the MT 17 x 275 on for drag racing now. These are about the only wheels I know that fit the AP racing 343mm 4 pots on the back. Two spare also. They also fit the harrop 343mm fronts and obviously the back when I had my original brakes.

This weekend meet has now been cancelled due to lack of officials. Too many people away due to the holidays.
Bugger but what do you do.

Since we had the meet cancelled it gave me a bit of extra time to get the car back in one piece. I cut the carpet where the cage mounts and put the small cut out back in the hole. You can not tell it is there unless you look up close. All the interior is back in and it is a normal every day car again.
When I put the cage in for next time all I have to do is remove the back seats, the sunvisors and the bits of carpet I cut out. Pretty simple. I should be able to do the whole lot including the cage install in under 1 hour start to finish so really that is bugger all.

The plan is to change the tyres and alignment setting on the friday, strip the interior friday night and bolt the cage in on saturday morning. Then go racing sunday, take the cage out sunday night and reverse all the wheel alignment and change tyres back to the stockers on the monday. Good think having tyrepower next door to out office and they help me out with costs now too so I dont have to change the tyres at home any more.
Sounds like allot of hastle but really it is about 2 hours work. No problems.

I am at a loss with e-bay atm. A couple of items I purchased latley have been way more on e-bay than in the shops.
For example the roll cage padding, flame proof stuff I got from Revolution racegear supplier for $13 per 3 foot length. On e-bay the current bid for the same product is $25 per length and climbing.
Sparco pedels $145 on ebay with 2 bids on them and I got them for $68 from the sparco supplier
Should go into business but one thing for sure do not think e-bay is always the cheepest way out. E-bay is missing so much Ls1 performace gear and really if someone wanted to could make some cash by purely doing ls1 gear like cam shaft kits, fast manifolds and stuff like that. e-bay has the useal cheaper type stuff or no name gear but I recon there is money to be made by selling brand gear

I have a few items on their way up.
New extra wide front fenders with mesh cutouts behind the wheels
New outlaw monaro front spoiler (too temping as Aarons looked great)
Old model Gforce G meter. Not the flash new one. I just wanted to have some fun with 0 to 100s and some corner Gs. $45 who can argue. The performance box is still waiting the go ahead as they need numbers before the next order. By the looks of it it wont happen so i might buy one outright soon.
and i finally got the alloy hub adapters up here. I used to have the plastic one but one broke. The stronger wheel stubs are on their way up too so a good excuse to put the car on the hoist to get some photos of the subframe assembly.

Yep thanks for that. Bit of background for the next years plans. There will be a few things I do over the next little while for show and fun. When i go in IP I will take it back to where it should be. Bad news is it does not look like I will get the support/sponsorship all in order for next years IP bar maybe a one off event if we do a support race with the supercars.
My sponsorship is all tied in with the apartment development with the company i work for and due to the finance/banking sector on the world markets banks are not being nice. We can easily get the money as the land we own already is worth millions, and the planned development will kick but and sell like wildfire but to get money at a good price is another matter. 200mil is a fair whack.
Basically next year i will just have some fun with the car and do some different things outside IP specks. i have done all the basics now and with a few more dollars easily get it logged booked. The cage should be cams certified within a month as that is a must.
So basically some things for the next little bit might not make sence

As mentioned since my IP racing will not be happening next year :sigh: and the aussie dollar sucks making things way expensive to buy, I am getting some body work done on the GTS. I will get the photos up at the end of the build so no progressive one this time. I will still be doing some fine tuning, maybe cam upgrade and getting bits and pieces on the car like toe hooks, battery isolator etc to meet IP specs but will be doing the body kit at the same time while it is all apart. The new body parts will come off once the car retires from the road so all the body panels will be replaced but the original kept. I will save up for the next 12 months for a pretty aggresive engine combo too.
Basic plan for the next few months
19x8.5 front and 19x9.5 rear wheels with tyres to suit and wheels painted. I am not doing the flairs
Bonnet mods and vents. Not monaro sytle or anything like it. Custom jobie
Front spoiler upgraded with lots of ducting etc
Bigger rear wing
New wider front guards with side vents
All paintwork to suit
Some small stero upgrades. I have stacks of stuff sitting around but never installed it. All will be plug in and out for racing days.
The new pedals arrived today so I will do some trialing ideas on the weekend

Few more photos of things
The second hand Gforce meter. I took it for a run out to a local streach of road and did a couple of 0 to 60mph runs and I got 6.3 first, 5.9 second and 5.6 third. Tried three more runs but 5.6 was my best. Usual traction is very difficult but that is not too bad on a 35 degree 80% humidity day. I did a bit of cornering and .8 was all I could muster with on the edge understeer.
I have to admit it is a good fun toy and the local holden club will have some fun on the next meet sharing it around. I recon I have got $45 out of fun already.

I got under the car with the ramps to look for what camber kit I had in it and took some photos of the BMR gear while I was under there.
Note to self to get someone to guide me reversing the car on the ramps. I went too far and went over the back. Thank buggery for the BMR bracing or I would of smashed the crap out of my sideskirt. Paid for itself already. Stupid mistake and lesson learned to be more careful. You can see there is a bit of damage but bugger all considering.
The BMR gear is the shiney metal.

There is like no information on them either from aussie sites. From the bit I could find they seem the goods and a couple of interesting stories but time will tell. Even the suppliers know very little about the theory behind how they are made and how they improve the handleing.
When you install it just have a spare person or two around and some jacks. Mine was difficult to get into position but once it was in it was a perfect fit.
To answer the other question the bracing is 25kg but of course the weight is very low to the ground.

Well FFS the next meet planned for the 2nd November has been cancelled due to both of the CAMS race directors will be both away at the same time.
Pretty annoying but I guess small town that will happen. There wont be any official timing until next years first meet in March.
30 November is a sponsors day so you can not do too much with a passenger in the car and with the track pretty full. Hopefully a practice day in between somewhere but these have been few and far between lately.
Anyway i have got down to 5.35 seconds 0 to 60mph. Getting better bit by bit. What a great toy that meter is.
At the end of october after I find out how accurate it is, if anyone want to borrow it feel free to ask. It is tiny so only a few buks to post.
I have a motorkhana event on Sunday the 26 Oct and drag racing on Friday the 24 oct so still plenty to do. Might get some MTs 17x275 up here but not sure if I just wait until next years drags. It is the last event of the year so not really worth it. Strong driveline now so time to give her some and see if I can get a 12 something. Best to date is 13.35 and 109mph with 2.1 60ft and 267rwkw.

I did up a check list with every thing I had to do to get the car to IP level.
It is a long list but really not allot of money bar the majors like the cage, seat, wheels and tyres. The rest is all little things.
That is nothing to do with the individual car but i guess reliabilty would be the first thing to do before even thinking about it.
Everything has to be CAMS approved and needs to meet the cams specs.
The main sites are below
http://www.camsmanual.com.au/regs.asp
http://www.camsmanual.com.au/general.asp
http://www.camsmanual.com.au/3category.asp
Bit of a summary of what I had from but to the safety level I wanted. There are a few that maybe slight overkill but read the above documents and it will give you a good idea. THere is a few things that I have missed but most of that is because it is standard on the car. This is for 3J IP
Toe hooks front and rear
2 x battery pull cords one inside within the drivers reach and one outside. Battery isolator.
Battery secured
Standard spoilers, wing etc
Up to 98 fuel or LPG
Sticker set complete i.e. battery location, isolator pull cords location etc
Non reclianable race seat
1kg CAMS approved extinguisher and mount
6 point roll cage
6 point harness
Window nets
Minimum weights and car to be in its appropiate catorgory. i.e 3000 to 6000cc
Race numbers and name on car
CAMS logo stickers
Remove tint from windows back to how the car was when releaced
Fuel tank anti spray foam installed
Wheels and Advan AO48 race tyres
100mm ground clearance at the front spoiler and 100 for the rest of the car except the exhaust
Center of hub and top of wheel to be inside guard area.
Roll cage padding installed to protect the head of driver. Helmet can not hit metal
Full fire proof underwear and balaclava set
Helmet with AS stamp. Full face recommended
Need race overalls, socks, shoes etc to comply with FIA 1986 standard, or FIA 8856-2000
Car Log book application forms
CAMS Roll cage certification forms
IPRA Provisional Circuit licence ,
Roll Over Protection Homologation Processing Fee
Homologation Roll cage certificate Issue Fee .
Log Book (non-Historic) Issuing Fee .
There might be more but if you are keen just read the documents yourself and see what else you may need for your individual car

I am not sure. No instructions but I will e-mail Holmart to see what they say. The blinker needs to change over but I think both the HB and LB bulbs are in there. I am just getting all the parts togeather so in the off season for racing I will put all the spoilers etc on the car so I have not really looked at any thing bar taking photos.
Also I might of found a cheap genuine ex supercar VX rear wing. Only for a bit of fun. Should be getting back to me tommorrow. It will fill a nice gap in the pool room/shed if it looks silly for car shows etc. That is the only time I would use it is promo purposes

True true. And to think i have the new guards, V8 supercar wing, low angry looking front spoiler, flash sideskirts, fat wheels and tyres and a updated paint colour on the two tone areas too. It will look pretty out there but thought why not have some fun with it before it goes to full time racer and the body mods are limited. I am getting a spare bonnet to put this on to btw. Most of the stuff I have picked up cheap, second hand etc. A few thing I have brought new like the bonnet scoop and all the IP gear.

Most important though......Since the scoop faces backwards, have you checked to see that it's actually in high pressure zone or not....Depending on design intention, it could be that you will be either reducing induction if it's in a low-pressure zone and intended as an induction scoop, or increasing under-bonnet pressure if it's an evacuation scoop and in a high-pressure zone...
Whilst it may look tough, practicality is the most important thing, and you really should determine the pressure zone before attaching it..
Some rearward facing NACA ducts also look good.....

Seldo this is just stuff for fun. Not really for any purpose. Just want to be different so I have not done any research into pro and cons of running this gear. I will do some circuit days (fun days only) and maybe it will reduce under bonnet temps but you are right it could have the opposite effect. I will continue to run the front ORI so induction wont come into it. It is originally designed to run forward in the Chrysler

The cost of the avalanche repairs were told to me today. I kept out of it and left the insurance do it thing but never thought twice about it.
Get this. All the airbag stuff, sensors, seatbelt gear fully fitted. $6500
New front bar, clips, paint and some other tiny bits $3500
$10k bloody silly considering there is no actual damage to the car. The front bar had a crack that is it. No damage to the undertray, k frame nothing. The wheel alignment will be done just to make sure.
Dont hit gutters. Might of been cheaper to go under the truck

I guess a bit of feedback on the BMR subframe bracing and front and rear strut braces.
One major difference was a major lack of understeer. I seemed to have more grip. Same tyres and all the rest. Hard to tell if corner speed was improved but after a few laps I realised that I could get power on earlier out of the corner. No change under brakes.
There was no timing and it was a practice day so it would be hard to say if the gear is worth time but there is a difinite difference in turn in grip, less understeer and as mentioned power could be put down a bit earlier. Overall I was impressed. My mate who took the car for a lap said it felt tighter and more corner grip. I did not give him any of my feedback until after he drove it. He has driven the car before a few times. Much better drive and allot more experiance than me.
One think funny when I jacked the car up on the front passenger side to put the brake ducts on it lifted passesger front but get this, the passenger back and the front drivers side wheel lifted 3/4 the way up. Pretty weird. While it was up there I then tested the door to see if it was hard to close or not close very flush like normally happens when you jack up the car. Nothing. It shut as it does on the ground. Perfect gently close and totally flush. It did not do that before I put the bracing of that is for sure.
The hardest thing today I struggled with was tyre pressures. I am still trying to get a good medium and getting used to the car because of my faulty tyre pressure guage. First outing it was great then I checked pressures and it was 40 psi hot. Too hight so I put them back to 35 and the tyre took 3 laps to come to temp properly so I was sliding all of the place. So for now I am going to run them at 38 until I get used to it. Too high I know but I dont have 3 laps for them to come to temp. I have one then it is on for 3 laps then a cool down.

When I did the in car measurements when the cage was in it should be fine as it will sit lower. The top of the seat is just below the height as my heat sitting in the car is about 100 to 150mm away from the hoop with the stock seat so it should be ok in theory. I guess i will find out

I get to about 220 to 225 in practice days so that is about what is on the video. Turn one is about 90km/h so a fair old brake into there. It used to wobble all over the place braking at that point but seems fine in the video.
On race days I have seen 230km/h a few times daring to push the car to the limits of tyre grip and hoping it will grip in turn one. Once it did not so it went off the end but that is what it is all about. Finding the limits.

Also this is the mount I tested on the weekend. Much clearer and less vibration. New rules will not allow it but it is a good set up for practice days. If I wind up the window and get rid of the wind buffering it will be better again. The botton area where the legs split are zip tied to the center a/c vents.

I must be a dam good driver hence no comments from the above :drivin: but being the only one to drive the HV circuit it would be hard to say pros and cons and give feedback. Thinking about it I would not be able to comment on others either from other tracks from a video.
My new oil cooler arrived and my billet PS resivor. Bit of bling but the cost of a alloy one was 250 plus 20 freight or I get this one for 350 total. $80 for something different is worth it. New product too and as people know I like to put them to the test. (I dont get anything from the companies but they know I give feedback on forums and I race in extreme temps so in a round about way it does help them for product testing) THe PS fluid level I have a plan but will wait until later as the racing is done this year bar a fun day.
Price was the deciding factor why I got a ASE oil cooler. $150 difference to a PWR one but it should be good and it will be good to see if this makes a difference. In theory it should.

It will be at the bottom of the radiator somewhere. I have all the lines already from the radiator oil cooler so it will depend on the reach as to exatly where it will be mounted. It will be fitted up Thursday by my mechanic so will chuck some photos up then. Since the lines are existing I douth it will be a typical straight out install as if you were starting from scratch.

I believe it is but not 100% sure. I would not have bothered with the thermstatic valve if it was a weekend car but it is a everyday car, go to the shops for milk etc etc so I do plenty of short trips that the car does not get up to temp. Thought for $100 save the engine that little extra bit considering I flog it half to death once or twice a month.
I hear you about the temps up here but the car still takes a bit to come up to temp. Normally 4 to 5 minutes driving. I have a 10 minute trip to work each day.
It will be interesting to see the difference that a in radiator oil cooler cools the oil compared to a external air type. Standard road conditions the in radiator cools from 110 degrees in and 95 degrees out. Pretty good and works great as long as there is not overheating issues with your car.

My mechanic is putting on the new PS reservoir and he mentioned that the square shaped metal ones are prone to airing the fluid out when the PS temps get high and causing noisy steering boxes from air rated oil. Anyone heard of this or any particular type of reservoir that it can happen to. Never had issues with the stock one.
As the one I have is new to the market I doubt there has been much R and D pushing the PS oil to high temps like circuit racing. On the other hand the design of being rounded in shape similar to the stock one may alleviate this issue if it is one
If no one has heard anything I shall leave it at that. My problem is my mechanic 99 times out of 100 he is right. Hope not as these are a nice looking bit of gear.

True true. The best option is water to air oil cooling which I did with the PWR radiator/engine oil cooler. The radiator helped but not to the degree I wanted so now trial without the oil cooler component in the radiator and go from the. It is a pain but bit by bit things will progress.

Listy,
When the water cooling the oil option works is through a true heat exchanger arangement.
This involves an inline heat exchanger that fits in the lower radiater hose behind the radiator and is about 300mm in length.
It is equipped with a flow and return oil port that allows the oil to be cooled by the radiator without the heatsoak associatted with the PWR Water/Oil radiator while also maximising the airflow through the radiator as it is fully exposed to the airflow and not blocked by oil coolers..

So the PWR is a not optional design. This one seems to run the engine oil cooling as the same method as the transmission oil. Wonder why they would not just make one like you mentioned. Obvoiusly there is a heap more heat in engine oil and alot more flow. You would think this would of been a problem and noted somewhere on the net. I would not be bugger all design change to do what you said.
I was convinced by PWR this engine oil cooler was the ducks nuts.
I will rearrange the engine and PS coolers to a better location with the new spoiler. It has a much bigger opening so more room.

I was going to just get a plug in there. Easiest way as I dont need the wiring in the supercar boot anyhow. Just the boot release that I add a bit of cord to so it can be releaced from the inside the car.
The cage put up a hell of a fight. Nealy 3 hours and I have got about 1 to go. Things were not lineing up no matter how hard I tried. Fitting the front stays to the central loop with all the interior trim on was a real pain. That was about 1.5 hours alone to get 4 bolts done. I found a good technique now so next time it will be easier. The subframe gear has caused some difficulties getting to the nuts too. It is all worked out now so next time it will be much easier. I still think 2 hours though not the 1 I roginally hoped.
Had 3 fans blowing on me and it still was not enough.

Good day today. Had a ball and it was great to take passengers out for a change. Good fun scaring them a bit. Most liked the brakes and how late you brake into the corners and the speed you go into turns. They had smiles so I guess that means they were happy.
Since the cage was in and approved I got asked to go in the promotion race with the race cars set on a handicap system. I said thanks very much but this is my only car as the avalanche is still off the road so I can not sorry. Spewing as it would of been great chance without the points or dangerous passing etc.
Fair amount of feedback today
Feedback on the cage was difficult as I was not pushing 100% but there was a definite improvement in turn in and I seemed to get more feel through the wheel and things seemed more accurate. I need to push it hard to get to know the limits to get some decent feedback.
The wing. Well it was a crowd pleaser and lots of people having a good look so that was pretty cool. Good to say it was a genuine one which does make people impressed. I was down between 10 to 15km/h on the straights even though I had the same entry speed. Normally I will get to 225 to 230 but I could not get above 215 all day and going past the start finish normally I am doing 200 but today 190. Fair amount of drag so next time I will trim it. It made a fair difference under braking keeping the tail less jittery slowing from high speed and it seemed to keep the car flatter in the high speed sweepers. Overall I really do think they do help and with the right angle for the track there is some real benifits there.
Cooling was the other thing and again it was not pushed to the limits but temps did not go above 105 all day. I dare say some improvement as it was a warm day.

Wow! lots of work however, well done.:yep:
Good to see "so far so good" with the temps, sometimes you can be on the edge and a little thing can be all you need to get back to being safe.
The wing has a huge angle on so I could see a bit of drag there, as you say, a play with angle will help.
Have allot of experience wings in my superkart days (400m 9.00sec) have made wings from alloy with alloy wing frame inside, tested with a Fiat Bambina, standing through the sunroof on scales with with fishing pull scales holding the wing measuring drag:shock:
This way I was able to measure downward pressure as opposed to drag at different angles.
The aeroplane affect works well (upside down) when drag is an issue.
The outcome of all this testing would be a thread all on its own. :up2sum:
Keep up the hard work and keep us all posted.

Cheers Steve. The wing does not really fit any local race Categorys so I will do some testing for fun but nothing serous. There is talk of a upping the streetcar shootout to a supersprints class as well as the race against the nominated time so those that have the cages and want to run slicks etc and dont want to go to full racing can do this.
This arvo I will take to car out in the sun and do some idling just to see what the go is. I have noticed already the car takes longer to get up to temp just driving to the track. Took about 10 minutes. Normally it would be no more than 4 or 5.
I did some data logging with EFI live so I will start a thread once I get some feedback to compare my results with what others get. Basically the oil pressure was good, shifts were about .5 to .6 a second, coolant not above 105 all day, and all the other bits like throttle positions etc. One thing is that my rev counter must be out as according to efi live I hit 6800 rpm a few times each lap. I always make sure I shift before 6500 when the shift lite come on at 6250rpm but this seems incorrect now. That is lots of revs and for the oil pressure to be ok up that high rpm that alone is a good result. This baffle has some work to do to prove itself. I will get the data up when I get the e-mail off my mate who lent the gear to me

I will get the data up when I get the e-mail off my mate who lent the gear to me
Listy with the shift / rpm issue, it's typical for there to be some "lag" between the RPM you see on the tacho (right before a cogswap) and the actual RPM - by the time you've done the shift.
If you can, post up your log. Will be keen to see your oil pressures.
Were you running slicks? Performancebox?

No just my normal semi slicks. No performace box yet either. Yesterday was the end of the season so by next Feb I will have my own EFI live and the performace box ready to go. I will have the new baffle in by then too.
Will do with the oil pressure when I get the logs off my mate.

The car looks mad mate!!! I love the rear wing too. :D :D
It is a mean old bugger. Still have all the spoiler and junk to go on yet. Yep the wing was one hell of a crowd please. Everone want to have a look and all day I got positive comments. Nothing about ricer copy or anything. I helps when the wing is real and actually produces downforce
Baby seat and all the rest of the car was back to normal bar the wheels by 6.00 last night ready for the everyday duties. Less 3/4 a tank of fuel but you get that. I took 30 minutes for the boot, ducts and harness and about 1 hour for the cage removal. Not too bad I thought.
I need a new PS pump as it was not very happy by the end of the day but that one is under warranty so cheap job. Good old REPCO.
It was interesting that if goes now with brand new fluid and the new reservoir in. I check the fluid and it seemed to be normal oil looking and not frothy. It got hotter than I have ever seen before like into the 125-130s. Normally it is 115 max. I just heat gun the oil in the reservoir. I guess I will know if the new tank is the cause of the issue if it does the same with the new one in. Might have to go back to the stocker plastic crap but I was warned. Hope not as I like that new tank. Strictly testing first as it is a new product but it could be and most likely just coincidence.

Cheers for the comments guys
Another little surprise today. Found out I came third for this years racing. I did not expect that as I missed the 1st round and the last round was cancelled but either way I am wrapped.
Next year I should be right for every round. Reliability is really good not just need to control the mods so it does not interupt with the season.
I honesly think the car is good enough to step up to IP for the support races at the Darwin V8 supercar round. If I get a bit of support and make it worth the company while with logos etc there is a good chance I would run.
Few small things to do before IPRA log booking but only a days labour for a mechanic to address the things that are not practable for a every day car (bat isolator, toe hooks, fuel foam in tank etc) and a days work for a bits I would need to do like stickers etc. Only things to take off are the subframe gear and rear strut brace.

What times does it run at the moment Listy ?, my engine tuner ran the support race for IP in 2002 got down to a 1.17.6 and another mate was in the 1.19s.
Also do you have a full cams lic (NC) or a 2s lic. Minimum for IP is a NC or PC and it takes a while to get it organised, so get it organised early as CAMS are slow with their paperwork.

That is a ripper time and I think the fastest IP car up here is in the 1.19s now but there is some VL supercar looking thing that can go those times and better but I have only seen it out once and it does not race.
I am down to 1.25.3 at the moment with plenty more in it. As a guess in its current mods status I would say a good second or max 2 seconds with a bit more aggression and new tyres but I am still quite carful on a few higher risk corners. The tyres I have are big time second hands and about 3 years old.
In the old Procar GT performance days the VX and VY GTS's that raced up here in the amerture class on semislicks got down to low 1.23 so I would say that would be possible as the car stands atm. Peter Floyd, steve cramp etc got down to 1.18s with full slicks in race times. They were quoting 280+rwkw and absolute top of the range suspension etc. Big money cars.
In reality with stacks of power, flash as super hard suspension and all the weight pulled out I would say 1.20s would be achievable and then a second or two less with a highly skilled driver. I am not planning on going there for some time.
I have all the forms and the stuff I have to do for the licence so that side is ready to go in a very short time. I will give it all plenty of time so I dont miss out if it all gets the go ahread.
I have arranged a practice day on saturday afternoon in the wet and in normal street tyres etc so I will get a chance to do some practice semi hard driving in the wet. I proberbly will just end up putting around but either way any circuit time is good time.

The private track day (me and me) was fun as. Very wet and on street tyres but the enjoyment of floggen the car in the slippery conditions was great. Good training for me too I recon as during the afternoon if started to dry and the limits of the road tyres started to be reached. Needed the semislicks if I was to stay there any longer but I had enough driving.
2 cars and one other was the bloke who opened up for me. Totally was free track on my own out there and it cost $0. Cant do that down south.
The 19 inch Nexan street tyres did a bang up job for cheap tyres and I would have no problem recommended them. Astonishing grip in a straight line out of corners considering the conditions. Turn in not bad at all but easy to see and notice the limits without it understeering without notice. Traction control actual helped quite a bit today and I had a chance to practice some drifting when I had it off. I am not very good at it at all. Just too much kick out and too aggressive so hopefully the drift training in Jan will help me control that.
Car went great. No idea how many laps but many many is all I know.

I will have a check and see what I have and get a close up. My mechanic fitted these so I will ask him Monday.
While I am here I ordered the below for my cam. All should be here in a fortnight
.040 racing head gaskets
Full gasket kit like everything from sump to tappet covers, water pump, new balancer bolt, intake gaskets the bloody works. Due me me being up here I dont want a buggered gasket getting in my way finishing it in a day.
Ls7 lifters
SLP oil pump and double row timing chain kit
ARP head bolts
Walbro intank pump (again) The 341 better be the right one I hope this time.
Injectors are sorted and should be right in 3 weeks
Oil baffle ready to go in also.
Just need a bit of cash (new RE55s took some cam money) and I will get the stuff from Oztrack at end of the month definitially. Includes
Cam, double springs and pushrods to suit.
Then raid the savings for a 8TB intake and if all goes well the end of March will be the GO. Sams or Harrops intake just working on some things atm.
I would guess 290 to 300rwkw just depends if the 8TB takes power away or not plus this dyno reads bloody low up here. Bazzas Turbo ls1 does 124mph and it has 296rwkw.
I have to do something about the giant strut brace because there is no way in hell it will fit with a 8TB intake. I am looking to modify it but I have not even started to look at what is involved with this.

Should be fun. Easy to do now that it has been done pretty cheaply. Dont forget adding if finding 18s to fit the big APs too.
The other thing I had a sponsorship meeting this afternoon so could be interesting times ahead. Nothing out of the ordinary other than some help with paying for mods etc. I thought I might be able to score the 8TB for free but dont think the idea came accross very well. They had some interesting thoughts though. The accounts people are looking at the budget and promo people are going to do some designs up professionally in the next week or so. By then hopefully we will come to a budget agreement and get thing moving. It is still not for IP but for general promo related things for the development.
Once people here what the plan is you will be saying WTF and WHY would you do that on a circuit racer.
Listy what compound are these tyres?
SR2 or TT?
TT's are soft - good for lap times but a heavy car will destroy them in a day (or as little as a few laps).
GTS Listy
20-02-2009, 11:11 AM
They are the TT but I checked with the guys down there and did some looking/researching they seem fine for what I will use them for. One warm up and 3 lad dash and one warm down. Should be fine. As long as camber is spot on he said they will do great but will wear faster than the SR2.
This weekend is just a fun day so I will be just putting around so I will see how they go. I guess if they wear stupid fast then I will look at other options. They have others in SR2 for cheap so if need be I will get another set. At that price even having a set for setting a new PB or getting a one off 3 lapper at max speed after I do some mods or something it would be fine anyway. That is allot of rubber taking the weight too so that should help.
I also picked up the car from the aligners and holy crap WIDE LOAD but dam they look serious. Photos this arvo. I have the semi slick HOWL back. The noise is incredible wowowowowowo.

It is Sunday with racing starting at 10.15. I will be out as early as possible to get a couple of runs in before hitting the show for the arvo.
Couple of photos of the wheels and my newly painted boot. Ignor the garnish as I have a new one coming and it was a 2 monite job just for sunday. Wing and the mount I am picking up tomorrow. I also talked to the bloke about flares and some more guard width but he said I need to get the flares on not just for the top but the sides of the tyres. We will see. They do stick out even with 1.5 degress - camber.

Looks like it but I have the suspension set right and - camber dialed in so it does not touch even on the hardest corners. The alignment bloke put one wheel back wheel on the gutter only, so the suspension is under full load (half the car is hanging almost) and the top of the tyres still just misses the guard only by a small small margain. It does not tuck under like the dunlops did but I did get him to raise it by 5 to 6mm today in the wheel alignment just in case even though I did not need to. The rear suspension has bugger all movement from load on the wheel normally to load under full corner weight. Bit back yard but the alignment dude has been there done that and knows more on race and stanard car alignment and set ups then most. Used to pit for a pro ralley team and circuit team. Now he is semi retired and helps me out with my car and tyrepower too.
Sunday I will find out anyway

All is done for tomorrow bar the exhaust. The bloke that put the subframe gear in must of removed the little exhaust mount I used so i could not put the straight out pipes on. Naturally I did not realise this until the old exhaust was off and I had the straight out pipes 3/4 bolted on. Very much peeved me. Then I had to put the original back on. All in about 1.5 hours wasted part of my day. Cage took 2 hours so still a bit long. Ducts easy but still take about 30 minutes with the taping and stuff. The new spoiler taping will no longer be needed
Took it for a bit of a drive and one tiny bit scraped even though we loaded tha back up to the max. Must be tyre wall movement just touching in corners. I raised the spings another 3mm or so so it should be right now. I will have to be pretty cautios. Pretty well decided today the flares are going on. I will have to steel the new 3 pc wheels I got from the avalance and use them on the GTS.

Good fun track day today. Bloody humid but lucky enough it did not rain. Car and tyre went well. I drive at 8 tenths pace and it felt bloody great. No need to warm up tyres not so straight into it. The TT spec were great and grippier than I have ever felt especially in the slower corners and hairpin. Just amazing levels of grip. At the end of the 3rd lap in anger they started to get a tiny bit slippery but virtually unnoticable. At this stage I can not tell if it is pressure or the compound.
There was no issues or damage to the tyres, chunks out ect. Really good result and worth every cent.
No scrubbing either so I might be able to leave the flares for a bit. I had a few touches on the street but no signs of touching on the track. After my mate Bazz told me that the street has big bumps and the track is smooth and that is why it touches on the street and not at the track. Makes sence too with speed bumps etc
Bugger all photos as my daughter was keeping the misses very busy.

2 sets of 3 with warm down laps. Pretty short timeframe between each. Not allot but I did want I wanted to do plus a short day to get to the show. If I knew the show was finishing early I would of stayed.
Bring on mid march as they will be a full race day at race pace.

Thanks for the photos again Dave. Cant half tell I took some angle off the wing. Last time I nearly could not see out the rear view mirror. Seems better with this angle here. Mid march is the proper round so I will do some fine tuning and start to get the tyre pressure sorted again with another set of tyres.
Can I start a rumor that the next lapspring day you are bringing the green ute down now that you are keeping it.

Found out what the bloke does to get the guards pumped. He has a small hydraulic press with a extension arm on it and a multifit panel beating tool on the end which he can change tools for different curves.
He just rigs it up under the guard against the chassis bit and uses a small hand pump that pushes the arm outwards hence pushing the guard out. He heats the inside of the guard with a hand held blow torch on low and the paint side with a heat gun. All very easy, no effort, fast and cheap.
$150 for both sides including the guard roll at the same time with the same tool so good pricing. The guard roll he has another tool on the end with some sort of lip that bends the metal over.
Also looking at the photos of the GTS the ol bugger sits pretty flat. Basic Tein suspension and stock sway bars seem to do a pretty good job.

Changing color from green and with silver inserts to green and lambo gold inserts. Should look sweet. I am doing the back diffuser too.

Final sponsorship meeting this afternoon so hopefully it is a goer and I will have timeframes for things.
No giant engine rebuilds or anything like that but it will be general stuff this year and 2010-2011 for improved production racing and even going into a couple of down south events (hope) . Just a small upgrade and track running costs like tyres, fuel, wheel alignments, unplanned damages and stuff like that. Hopefully it will be worth between 5k to 10k per year which is about what it cost me anyhow with the bits and pieces of upgrades I do.
There is that one thing they want that requires the car to be sent to south for a couple of weeks. It was my idea but it has sort of grown into reality so it seems.

We are in business. All approved and a goer.
Some conditions as with anything so now it is approved I will go into a bit of a story. I mentioned the sponsorship idea about 12 months ago to the company I work for. They are a developer and like to build with good energy ratings, efficiencies in their buildings and designs.
Anyway I mentioned the thought of promoting the next stage of the development by signwriting on my car and installing a LPG system on the car being the liquid injection LPG. Being a bit green and the LPG idea they seemed to like it so I put a few ideas together and did up a speal. It was all on hold while the development went through the normal council, planning and government so now that is all done we are proceeding with the build in the next few months. It will be about 120 apartments and lots of office and retail space. 14 story high so not too bad for Darwin.
So I will get the car sent to APS in Melbourne for the cam install, 8TB install and the Liquid injection LPG system. The cam will be specific grind to suit LPG running and circuit racing.
It will be on a truck heading south after the 15th March once all the parts and 8TB stuff is sorted.
As always I will have lots of picks and be open with information as I always do.
I pay the upgrade stuff like the 8TB, cam and the LPG (which I was planning to do anyway including cost sending the car south) and they pay race related running costs, race related mechanical breakdowns, fuel for race days, race tyres and a bunch of other race things. Basically anything circuit related will be taken care off. Pretty cool really. Eveyday stuff I pay for like servicing and all the rest. It is for 3 years including a budget for some down south events next year.
Signwriting should be done while it is down south too. The car should be back at the end of April. APS will be doing some real time circuit testing for me too to make sure the tune and set up is spot on.

Should not add too much. Maybe 30 odd kg. ( I need to loose some weight so maybe this is some incentive)
The LPG thing should be fine as long as it has a couple of weeks of being driven and some proper circuit testing before it comes back to me. There is a local supplier who is very good at repairs but not officially LI LPG certified so he can not install them. I will have local back up thank goodness. Frank at APS will get some circuit testing done somewhere. Not sure where and when though be he said he will take car off it.

Understand what you mean (I know your are joking and all) and honestly I dont mind putting a explaintion to it. I often wonder how others afford some mods but you never really know. Simply I have a budget each month for the GTS and spend it. That is about it. Thats why it is a bit by bit project
This part of the GTS project has been on the cards for about 18 months so I have put same cash aside each month for this bit. Seems studid spending 15k on this sort of stuff but this is what I wanted to do and fully intended doing it when the time was right. Always like to do new things, try new stuff, do things that are not a run of the mill etc.
(BTW that suspension of yours would of been in my car by now if I was not doing this stuff at this particular time. Oh and the wheels would of been in my shed too)
Yeah just kidding. Lots of goodies you have there.
Good luck with the build.
With the Harrop intake, keep an eye out for sticking throttle blades. I know of several that have had tolerance issues and get stuck on cold mornings for example. Also check to see that each throttle blade doesnt have gaping gaps, can cause a few issues.

Hey Listy ... have you given consideration as to how the LPG will work/integrate with the Harrop manifold?
Another one of those outside the square things I like to do. 8TB intake with decent cam combo done with LI LPG so it will be all in the tune. All the lines and valves in the engine bay will have to be custom fitted to suit the mountings on the 8TB intake so it is not a stock LPG install. Frank from APS has done research into it and he actually thinks it could help having the extra air flow and the higher tuning abilities with individual TBs. If I end up getting the cylinder heads shaved and compression lifted, again he thinks it would work really well. Just not sure on that as yet as driveability and stock internals may be a issue with reliabilty. LPG especially liquid injection type can work very well on higher compressions. There is a high end car in the US running 13.1 on stock LPG.
We will see anyhow.

I spend the last hour or so doing up a list of things to do over for APS and for me to do over the coming 2-3 months.
I only did this up for APS and for me to tick off as I get things done. For those who like the details there is enough there to keep you happy for a bit
Start from tommorrow onwards
Mick at rev it up book in race seat fitment. LOW as possible.
Buy new alloy radiatator header tank. ASAP and send to APS.
This weekend
Fit roll cage window net
Fit side intrusion bars
Fit brake ducts
Saturday car checks
Few lings for the intake set up and progress photos from other builds

APS information
Need to discuss if we do a cylinder head shave or leave it be. I have already supplied 0.040 head gaskers.
Need to work out cam, pushrods and springs to suit the car. APS need to supply cam, pushrods and springs to suit. Around the 232/234 with a good high lift for good torque mid to high range
Need to work out boot space required and if the rear strut brace will have to be removed. If it has to be that if fine as if I go IPRA it has to go anyway.
Diff preload may need adjusting. After the install of Harrop Trutrack when you stop at lights and you go from sitting in neutral and then select first there is a small clunk and the car moves a small amount. I am not sure if it is clutch adjustment or diff issue. Never caused any harm and been like it for 8 months. Fix it if you can.
I would like the engine oil cooler and the PS cooler relocated to the bottom of the radiator side by side or close enough to it. If you can do this while fitting all the other stuff please. Remove the platic undertray below the spoiler as this is not needed anymore. The sump guard can be mounted back to the stock way.
I have a VY supercar spoiler going on so I have plenty of room to get air into it, The spoiler is modified to fit the VX lights and panels. No where near as low as a genuine supercar one so still useable on the street. I would have it fitted but I can not transport the car on a truck with it.
Originally the car was tuned by Tim from Electonic Automotive so not sure if this will complicate the tuning getting into the PCM
I WILL WANT LOTS OF PHOTOS PLEASE. Each bit that goes on the car needs to be photographed and progress photos of the install. I can send down a digital camera if it is too much trouble to use yours.
Fitment, intake changes and check to do for before instalation
Oil filler cap will not fit with Harrop intake. The plastic extension has to be removed. Need to get a filler cap to fit direct onto the oil filler outlet.
Strut brace should still fit but may need spacers under the bolts for extra room to raise above the intake pods
ORI mods to split air flow to each side. I will draw up a plan of what is to be done. Should be able to be done in house at APS.
Fuel line pressure regulator may be required (APS to advise)
Confirm all the gear and parts for the Harrop intake is there to relocate the intake air temperature sensor and all necessary vacuum fittings and brackets are there.
Please check operation of new 8TB intake and service if required
May have to relocate the PS reseivor to suit new 8TB intake (note a new PS pump is required to be purchased by APS as mine is very noisy)
Jobs for APS to do
(No particular order for all this by the way.)
Fit oil catch can (supplied by me)
Fit new PS pump. Just a Repco or similar one please. (APS to supply)
Relocate the PS cooler and engine oil cooler to below radiator
Install new alloy radiator header tank (supplied by me). Just use the same plastic bottle for overflow as I will sort out a chrome one later
Please supply 2 x Gloss black silicon joiners to suit each pod to ORI. 3 inch on pods and 3 inch on ORI
Get all the LPG brass looking things annadised in HSV red (same as the GTS HSV TB colour). If there are other items in the engine bay for the LPG gear please advise and I will tell you what to do with them
Get the 8TB set up with the LPG components
Install walbro fuel pump (36lb injectors are supplied with 8TB intake)
Get appropiate lines done in braid including the fuel line for rails on the back of the Harrop intake. If speedflow or other fittings/joiners are required use red unless it is going to look silly with red in a particular bit
With all the intake, ORI and other bits off the car can you do something with the engine bay from the water damage I got when the radiator burst on me spilling stuff everwhere. Near the firwall and on top of the radiator needs a good clean and alloy polished up.
Install 8TB intake
Install LPG gear
Install all camshaft gear supplied
Install Baffle sump insert (supplied) so sump will have to be removed. Please note I have not supplied a new sump gasket but if needed please get one.
Install battery isolator and cable (supplied by me) with cable coming out of top of the bonnet infront of drivers side front window. (no holes in bonnet) Mount so it looks good in engine bay and flush where it come out from under the bonnet infront of the windscreen.
New fluids for engine. Use quality engine oil to suit getting hammered and only Motul, Redline or mainline race oils for other oils as required
Use stock holden coolent with a bottle of redline water wetter
Tune on dyno to suit LPG and 98 octane fuel. LPG will be primary fuel and I intend on running on this as much as possible
Note this is a new sump baffle so please check oil pressure regulary.
Set radiator fans to suit 160 degree thermostat (already installed but tuning never adjusted)
Set RPM at 7000 if possible but dont jepadise the engine for it depending on comression it ends up being. Minimum I need is 6700 rpm.
Set small red shift light limiter up to come on at 6400 to suit new cam (about 6200 now)
Real time tuning for road use
Real time tuning giving the car hell on a circuit or somewhere you can do aggressive on and off throttle work. I do 5 minute races up here at full tilt with warm up and cool down laps on top of that.
SPECIAL NOTE. If you have the semi slicks on they are soft compound. DO NOT go more that 2 or 3 laps at full speed as it will bugger them. Normal laps and normal corner speeds or flogging the car down the straight and backing off for the corners it is fine and wont hurt them.
I will be sending down the below gear. Everything else APS to supply. If you need a extra parts outside standard stuff for the job or LPG install please let me know costs as the part is needed
8TB intake with intake pods and tray (tray not being used)
New alloy header tank
SLP Oil pump
Adjustable double row timing chain
Ls7 Lifters
Arp head bolts
Walbro intank pump (36lb injectors already on new intake)
Front main seal
Front cover gasket
Water pump gaskets
Harmonic Balancer bolt
Exhaust gaskets
Head Gaskets thin version cosmetic 0.040
and one or two other bits for the cam change. It is in the packet
Oil catch can kit from ASE
Custom Baffle sump insert
Battery Isolator and pull cord
Send all gear removed back please including gaskets that are still useable. Cam and eveything. Even if the cam and lifters are stuffed as it is a C4B so most likly they will be.
Please be carefult with the HSV throttle body as these are very expensive and worth heaps second hand. Ensure the intake tray of the 8TB is packed well.
Me to do before leaving and to send down
Do up plan and diagram for ORI mods. Get parts as required
Order in LPG stickers for return to race with LPG onboard
Me to do on the return of the car
Purchase e-bay filler cap saying ls1 and swap over
Paint selection and color for intake pods and ORI. Custom gold color or gloss black
Supply and install alloy and nice looking radiator overflow can instead of small hose going onto the ground (drag racing require it).
Make up two red annosied blocks engraved with HSV the same size, ingraving type etc as the HSV GTS original TB. Have some method of joining the block to the hose clamps like 2 small hooks or similar
Also get 4 hose clams to suit 3.5 inch pipe (suit silicon pipe joiners from ORI to intake pods). Get done in either annosied red or painted in the same red as the blocks will be.
Replace clutch resivor with chrome one. Rosso one
Put chrome covers or paint to suit the new pods and ORI on other items like fuse box, ABS cover, washer fluid etc. Need to shine up ABS controler
Buy 3 new GTS badges
Buy 1x 300 badge for boot
Buy 2 x HSV badge for rear diffuser and boot garnish
Put on toe hooks and intergrate into spoilers. Must be removable so a removal plate on the back and front spolers so that the toe hook can be put on and removed with a socket

I took the side bars out and now need to have a think. I got them as low as they go just above the door sill.
It is the combination of the race seat position, the high sides on the race seat and long bloody legs. I had it all worked out and then this problem I never thought I would come accross.

I talked to a few blokes today and they gave me some ideas too. Not so much on tall side but more on ideas to make it all happen. It is easier with a race suit too as eveything slides easy. Practice and some trialing different ways in the race suit seems to be the way to go.
I did 3 out of 4 races. Misses needed a hand as the kid were being difficult. Still 3 out of 4 races is still good.
Good news is I smashed my PB by 1.2 seconds. Down to 1.24.16 for a lap now. I struggled with consistency but that was going to happen with new tyres. The soft compund were great but the outer edge wear on the drivers front even with -4 camber was bad. All the other tyre were totally fine.
Heaps of grip but at a cost.
The car in general was brilliant with one small issue. The camber bolt come loose and I lost my camber but easy fix thankfully as the same thing happened when Garry was up here. The race seat felt great too. Really comfy and it feels like you are more intune with the car not having to hang on like grim death just to stay in the one spot. Hard to explain but hope you get the picture.
So now the car is fast, feels great, so now is a good time to bugger with it again. This time power. Woohoo

Just to explain the 3rd lap. I caught up with the toyota right on the end of the last lap and all twistes so not passing. Normally they dont allow cars that slow in but the numbers were way down for streetcars shootout as 3 blokes have steped into other racing classes and with race cars and a few regulars were not there.
They did speedo gun tests at the end of the straight today and best I got was 211. Still a good 10 to 15km/h down compared to the times without the supercar wing. I had it set of the flattest setting to and not much difference. Thing is my times are better by a fair margin even without the new tyres so it must be doing something elsewhere on the track.
Late braking is the best thing I found the wing useful for. Just so steading and flat.
Next meet will be mid May (miss April due to upgrades) Long time between drinks again.

They are no that bad true but being brand new and getting that much wear on the edge is the thing I was talking about. The rest of the front tyre is fine. Just the outer edge is the wear area. I already have -4 degrees but have room to go more if I want. Next time I will try -4.5 or so on that wheel only and rotate back to front.
Pressure was 32 psi hot.
Total laps with them so far about 30 total in all. Broken up about 15 reasonable fast, about 8 flat out on the limit stuff and the rest warm up warm down or stuck behind cars.

CheersI thought the tyres looked pretty damn good - nice wear pattern across the tread, and no obvious hot-spots. Listy - as stated once before - get yourself a pyrometer - the best tool you'll ever add to your race-kit. If you'd run a pyrometer over those tyres I doubt that you'd be changing much in the way of alignment or pressures. They look good from the photos... If you add too much more camber you'll end up with the inside being burned and also start to lose braking from loss of contact patch. You'll also see that you have a bit of a build-up of rubber at the outside edge of the inner sipe, which indicates that that area is verging on over-heating. The shoulder war doesn't look too excessive to me but may indicate a but too much kneel or boll-roll.
Get a pyro !

Had a mini brain wave. Work hired a thermal imaging camera today as they normally do once ever few months for inspections on swithcboards etc. I was thinking i might borrow this for a weekend and use it to take some images of heat accross the tyres, brakes, exhaust manifolds etc. They are talking about buying one so could be handy. When if comes off I will chuck some picks up. To hire them it is 350 per day and to buy about 15k. Not cheap but a great tool. I am not sure of its range though.
Also the GTS is on the truck today heading down south so time to get the 300zx going as a run around. I will start a thread on this very small project.

Small update. The custom stuff is being done this week and next. That being the ORI, the anodizing of some parts, braided lines made up, the cam shaft selection and ordering etc.
Next week the LPG gets done following is the cam and 8TB intake install. Hopefully done by the 24 April. Then tuning, testing and some more testing.
I will leave one week just in case leeway.
Plan is to get it on a truck by the 8th May and be up here in plenty of time for the meet on the 23 May.
So no powercruise this year. It is on May 9 up here this year. I wanted to go but just not enough time for APS to get all the work done with the ls1 drags and easter.
After the event on May 23 the spoilers go on and all the painting and decals gets done. I will get a efi live system purchased too.
After that, I was wondering how much work it is to put a hollenger 6 speed in and join it up with my ls1.
I also have some final drawings of the decals but can not upload as they are in PDF and if i copy all the decals disappear. Must be something done via photoshop.

To put a hollenger in it would blow any form of budget for the next couple of years, very pricey and having to get a custom bellhousing wouldn't be cheap either. Have you thought about the PPG gear sets, convert it to a full dog box, not that they're cheap either but it would be alot cheaper than a hollenger.

I can get one for about 8k referbed but yes the belhousing and electronic changes it would run into 15 k or there abouts. Future plan yep.
The crash gear sets are only 1 to 4 arnt they. I remember seeing 4.5k some time ago for a set. It would be good if they do 5th too as it would be a good option.

Well it seems photos will be difficult to come by. Bit of a shame but not much I can do from up here.
The engine is out and stripped down to the short block. Plan is to get all the cam gear and all the other bits like 8TB, pulleys, new PS pump etc put on over the next 5 days. Then engine back in and get the LPG install done around mid next week. After this tuning starts and and we should be in business. The custom ORI is being made this week as well as the finish off of the gear being anodized. I am getting the ARP rod bolts and new rear main seal while the engine is apart. Not sure why it had to come out but maybe just easier for them.
The car should be still right for getting on the truck back by the 7th May. Racing on the 26th so bloody hope so
It has taken me 2 years to spend 15k on this car but in 3 weeks I will double the amount spent. Lots of money for really very little power increase but it is different and I like that. 15k with maybe 30rwkw = $500 p/kw.
If I get a photo or two I will put them up.
GTS Listy
23-04-2009, 10:13 AM
That 15k is out the window now.
It was inevitable that once things were opened up further more work will be needed. The Tex is completely buggered beyond reconditioning including the flywheel. Shows even with damage the buggers still hold together and dont slip. I felt nothing wrong with it. Not surprised really considering what happened to my stock clutch i.e. literally major cracks throughout the metal parts. I am going a bigger version of the Mel Wood one this time as as it will still handle lots of punishment and hopefully stop the shuttering which really drove me nuts with the Tex. I bedded it in all the time to help with drivability but I was never going to get another one. They are bloody strong and this has certainly proven it but compromise is there.
The heads are not sealing due to some overheating in the past. No idea what he is talking about there. :flame: I need a skim/shave to get a good seal on the new gaskets so while I am at it bump the compression up a little. It is the C4B heads so there is some room for more compression as they are less than stock ls1 anyway. Again not surprised as this poor thing has seen some heat. It will be just a clean up and small port of the heads so no major porting etc
Also I need some new valve train gear as there is some issues/damage there. I am not sure as it was all a bit hard to understand what it is damaged so I am opting for roller rockers as a upgrade. It will help it rev higher better too.
One thing this is all upgrade gear so if I went a new motor I would of needed this stuff eventually anyway. I am definitively going to stick with 5.7 liters long term now. Other than the short block the rest is pretty well new. Some you beaut lightweight internals will be done later and some more revs put through it.
Things are progressing well but more dollars. Doeh. As the old saying goes you play you pay and it is the case here.
Please that be it. No more wrong from here.
Any guesses because I have nfi. 267rwkw is used to be with a safeish tune.
Tuned 5.7l, 8TB intake, higher compression but not sure what yet, slightly ported heads, cam around 236/238 area with high lift, a 7000rpm redline and on higher octane LPG produce in regards to rwkw.

Update
The engine is back together and going back. Dyno results should be here by the end of the week. All the LPG stuff is mounted or being done this week. It is madness but the 8TB trumpets had to be drilled to suit the LPG gear. People will squirm at the sound of that as I did and I own it. (I was expecting it to happen too)
No photos as yet sorry.
Cam size is chosen to suit my applications so no exact specks sorry (first for me I think). It is designed for Hidden Valley and the rpm requirements for the track so really the information would not be much use to anyone anyway. So there is some idea it is in the 230s area with 615 ish lift. Lsa will be in the 108/110 area. Probably going to have so toe with that cam size, 8TB and LI LPG.
They are testing the stock Harrop intake tray I got with the 8TB on the first dyno and road runs before going further with the custom ORI to check if it is worth putting the custom one on. If there is minimal or no real drops compared to straight out the trumpets we will leave the Custom ORI for now.
I will also have a bonnet with a scoop on it so for some fun and shows etc so I can have the tray and intake pods removed and it still drivable without the 8TB sucking in too much hot air.
I will do some track testing too for some fun with this on. Facing forward too.
http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk77/HSVListy/Scoups007.jpg
http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk77/HSVListy/Scoups008.jpg
So the plan if all goes will with time
24 may will be testing the gains on the circuit with the power increase. The car will be in the exact same set up as the last race so i can see what gains more HP will give at the track. If i can get consistent I might try it on 98 oct and LPG but no point until I get lap times very close.
I will do a few laps without the supercar wing to see if this is sucking up too much speed plus so I have a time with the stock GTS body work.
The June round I will get the supercar wing, the new front spoiler, modified and lowered sideskirts and rear undertray/diffuser put on to see if there is any gains with a aero package put on. I will have the car full of sponsorship decals too so that is worth a second right there. Sponsorship kicks in at the same time. Very happy with that but it has been allot of work to get to that stage though.

It was about 1900 with me in it and full tank of fuel last time I weighted it with the cage, subframe bracing etc on it. Still had both front seats in it then.
I will get another one before I start the proper weight removal testing.
The biggest problems I will face with weight removal is bloody me.
Also the front spoiler has been modified and raised for street use. (street use but not street friendly) I will be over 100mm off the ground though providing I dont lower the car too much. I have some leaway. The rear diffuser will have a similar set up to the V8 supercars but just a home made jobbie stuck on the existing spoiler. Have not really done much homework on that as yet.

No dyno results. Actually the engine is not even back in yet. I was told it was going to all done and run up today. There is still some LPG gear to install in the rest on the car too and this was supposed to be all done.
All a bit slow compared to what was supposed to happen. Basically not much has happended this week at all. Hopefully they get stuck into it early next week and get it finished.
I had next week for daily driving testing and some hard driving testing to make sure any bugs were sorted before it got back. I still need this done but it will delay things. I have it booked on the truck Friday but may have to revist this.
I a not winging but I am so used to having apsolute control over what happens to the car that when things dont get done as they are planned it gets to me.
I must calm and trust the man. Good things come to those that wait but I need to be at the meet on the 24 May and it takes 12 days freight to get back up here.
Also no photos is driving me nuts.

I got a couple of pictures through. The brass on the LPG gear can not be anodized so we are leaving it. It is fine like that anyway
The pulleys look pretty good but I will have to do something with that big thing in the middle to tidy it up. Dont know what but.
The PS pump had to be updated to a later model one to fit the pulley and they are better anyway so a good idea. He had to get a couple of new hoses to get it all to fit.
The engine is 'apparently' going back in today but he said to call on Thursday to see how things are progressing. I have pushed the pick up out to Monday next week. Frank recons this should be fine.
There will be a few bling things not on here as planned but I will do them on its return. Mainly braided lines etc
Missed out on the photos of roller rockers, double valve springs, new cam etc etc but they are in there. Same with the new clutch
The new cam just fits so it must be pretty decent. Be interesting what rpm the peak power comes in.

As much hoping, planning, organising parts before hand, pushing the workshop along it looks like the car wont be finished in time to get back up here for the meet on the 24 May. Engine aparently got put in today but it was supposed be in last Friday so another week waisted. That is 2 weeks now virtually waisted.
They just have not spent enough time on my car but what can I do up here. They have spent 22 hours in 5 weeks on the car to date. No parts delays and no reason as they have not done any tricky bit like tuning etc.
Really very annoying and I had sponsors coming to this event and all.
Also it is the last official timed even until August so I wont know official gains until then. This break is due to the supercars in June and July there is no race meets due to holidays.
I am sure the work will be top notch but they have known since February when the planning started how critical it was to finish the car.
The poor old nissan will have to come out of retirement. Floggen a 25yo car with 280 000km on it does not seem fair to it but it will have to do.

Got some progress photos.
I am going to organize a private track day as soon as I can on its return to do some laps and at least get a feel for the changes. That will do. Fact is the car has stacks of grip, massive braking ability and it is set up to handle more power so a good guess is that with more power will bring more speed. Even with the new spoiler on I dont think that will make bugger all difference.
The new pulleys are looking better now they are in the engine bay.
APS will get some more progress happening on the intake and LPG gear. Maybe towards teh end of the week we will have it running.

THanks for the comments. I am pretty happy with the look that is for sure. Most things match either green, blue, red and some brushed look alloy but I am not planning to go full chrome.
Looking at the pictures of it set up I really dont care about it being late, all I want to do is go for a drive and do some laps and listen to that intake noise. They say it sound pretty good but have only heard about it from others.
With the Harrop intake my mechanic is familar with them so if dramas happen he should be able to get things soreted pretty quick. I was fully serviced and a number of checks were carried out before instalation. APS have fitted a few in their time so he has done some tidy up things to it. Not sure what but I trust him.
Only downside my nice pulleys are hidden but for shows etc the front cover and the side pods will be removed so should look pretty good. Also once I get the scoop set up done they will be seen.

Just spoke to APS. All the little bugs have been sorted. YEA>
Tuning is complete. They are going for a good test drive today to double check everything and give it a bit of a work out. Later today they will be putting it on the dyno for some final power runs both with LPG and petrol to get some numbers.
So if all goes well the end is near.
It also come in under budget too which I am wrapped with. (dont tell APS that otherwise they might charge people more.) It was my budget so maybe I was over estimating a tad too. Either way can not complain.
Just on 15k thats including the clutch, 1.7 rockers, motor removal and head shave. Great price actually considering the LPG was $5700 on its own. There was freight back and forward on top of this which is $720 down and $1450 for the return trip.
A summery of what work was done is below
Engine/gearbox removed
Disassemble engine and fit custom cam (yes actually custom grind not off the shelf cam), double springs, new oil pump, baffle sump insert, double row timing chain, 1.7 roller rockers, new gaskets including thin head gaskets, upgraded PS pump and bracket, 8 rib billet pulley set and new rear main seal
New 600hp Mal wood clutch.
Resemble and reinstalled engine/gearbox
Fitted 8TB with LPG gear. LPG injectors, 36lb petrol injectors and installed
Relocate billet BS tank to suit intake tray
Install new radiator header tank
Installation of LI LPG system, fuel lines and LPG tank including second outlet
Installation of second LPG pump
Fitted walbro high flow petrol fuel pump
Full service and race spec fluids front to rear
New premium spark plug leads and spark plugs
Unlocked ECU
Custom dyno tune and road test. Lots and lots of this one.
Thing outstanding is the oil catch can, the battery isolators and the big ass BMR front strut brace and if it will fit with the Harrop 8TB intake/pods. If not I will make one to suit.

mine have a gap of about 20mm and it causes the shock to bounce when i go slow into my driveway.

They are the Noltec offset top strut mounts I think. They are a bit shallower and I remember they needed some extra spacers under the strut mount to get them to sit right and nice and tight.
I think it is the ones in the packet on the bottom.

Few more photos of the GTS as that is all I will see for a few more weeks. It will be leaving a bit later. All the battery isolators are all in and the other bits and pieces. Not sure on the strut brace yet but hopefully it will be ok.
The issue is the TPS fueling so still going on the tune. It was sortedbut they did a few hundred km to get the first service done and the tune was not as perfect as they want. It is not exactly a drop down to the local tuner for a touch up once it get here. Another few days wont hurt
Mid next week is pick up now.
The outside shots come up good too. I am happy with the bay and the colors so I will leave it.

Yes that is from APS today. They were doing on and off dyno with a bunch of so called private road driving to get some circuit type driving in. Instructions were simple. Drive it like I do so they are tuning to that i.e. not exactly putting around on the streets type driving.
It is all good it is just the TPS fueling side that they need to get right. Not hard but needs time and needs to be spottie dog.

Quick update. I really hope this goes to plan this time as I have said this before. The hold up has been the software program they are using but the car is on the dyno today for some more tuning and some full power runs.
So the plan for its return. Plan is to get the car finished by Friday fully turned and road tested with a couple of hundred km or road testing done.
Then on Saturday hopefully one of the APS blokes can take the GTS over to Chevs to get a dyno readout on the same dyno as 100s of other 5.7 L cars.It would be good to get a good number and atleast then I will be able to get a accurate result compared to others. 324rwkw is the highest so far on the Chevs dyno but I am not sure how it will go or if it will go that high on a different dyno. Also I don't even know if Chevs can do it this Saturday as i am waiting for a call back.
Then on Monday or Tuesday get it on a truck for the 12 days return trip, ready for the race meet on the 26 July.
Hopefully it all goes to plan. PLEASE

Things are going well but a small snag. The front strut brace will not fit so they are making me a new one out of roll cage bar. So Tuesday it should be done now. Probably wont get to chevs for the dyno run anyway now as it is too much hastle.
It needs to be picked up from APS frankston, driven to chevs in Curren downs one suburb away, do the dyno then take it to the transport depot at Laverton North which is about 1.5 hours away. Oh yea needs to be done Wednesday morning when eveyone is at work. Any takers. :yike:

Happy days. The GTS will (yes WILL) be on a truck tomorrow.
Final number with a safe tune for giving a stock internal engine hell was 320rwkw on LPG and 308 on 98 oct. I made more rwkw on LPG but was wound back for safety on my instuctions as I dont want to risk the motor.
Both tunes are perfect and ready to roll and running two tunes in the one PCM is a pretty cool idea.
It will basically be getting of the truck in Darwin, going the tyre place to put the semis on and out on hidden valley for a test drive.
I am one happy camper. :breakdance: :breakdance: :breakdance:

It has come up great
There is a liquid injection LPG bloke up here already. They have only just finished the course and are still setting up. They have been doing normal gas installs for years though.
I will be dropping in to see them so they can go though the set up and get familar with it and I will be doing the same with Mick at RIU. Tuning is limited to APS but there is internet based tuning so they can check things over the internet. They have a copy of the PCM program so if problems occur they can send me the other one to get me out of trouble.
If it comes to it I would organise a tuning with a 3 or 4 people and get them up here. Hope that is not neccessary though

Review of Listy's GTS:
I was the lucky one that had the job of driving the car from Frankston to Laverton.
I gave the car a bit of a run, but didnt pump it too hard.
The car needs slicks permanently, I didnt take it out but the rear end felt a little lose due to the power.
Brakes felt good, only gave them 1 medium stop but stopped well.
Car is very noisy, maybe lack of sound deadening, as well as partially stripped for the cage. I could hear more than i wanted to ahaha
What rear end is in it? Was skipping a bit (kaaz?)
The gear box is fairly notchy, but the 2-3 shift is very nice (ripshift?)
The car felt a bit gutless low down (thats me coming from a super 6 that only makes low down power), but from 3k onwards, the thing starts hauling ass. Didnt give it to it too hard due to speed limits and not wanting too much attention, but lets just say the 3-4 xr6 turbos i past didnt even try me ahah
Handling felt good, but the car feels very heavy compared to my super 6. Im not sure if the tein damping was ramped upped tho, that could contribute. They felt a little soft. What bushes have you done to the car?
The cushion button clutch took some getting used to as I hadn't driven a manual in a while, but it was good fun and the car was an easy car to drive, too much torque to ever stall... ahaha.
The intake started to scream from 3k onwards (induction noise :D) and on the dyno it sounded like a fukn jet or the hulk, thought it was about to go transformers on my ass and rip the place to shreds.
This aint a very detailed run down, but all in all the car felt really nice to drive, handled well, power was good and delivery was great, would be awesome on the track with you never going below 4k.
Hope you enjoy the car Listy, I am ashamed that I got to drive your baby before you did, but Im sure you will have a grin ear to ear once you do.
Note: This was my 1st v8 drive, I could only compare to my super 6 and jap turbs I have driven, but the sound alone required 2 changes of underpants, LOL.
Cheers for the experience Listy, glad to help you out and would do it all again in a heart beat next time its down for work (turbo hint hint ;))
Nick
only downside for the day was the copious amounts of public transport to frangas and back from laverton, as well as button clutch in some road work BS on dandy-frangas road. But it was worth it :D
EDIT: BTW there were no noticeable problems with the tune. Ran gas the whole time (i think), no idle issues, started well, didnt smell too rich, no flat spots, just a nice power curve :D Tune felt spot on. only thing that is annoying is the airbag warning light. are they disconnected? only seemed to happen on the 1-2 shift ;)

That is one hell of a review. Great and great.
Also thanks so much for your help today. Much apreciated.
I guess to finish off with some comments so I can answer some of your questions
Tyres will be fixed with 265 RE55. Hard to get them to slip unless you really want to.
Glad you liked the brakes as those suckers face plant you if you want but not with street tyres as much.
The exhaust and road noise is pretty well there but that is mainly from the boot noise coming through from lack of back seat. You get used to it but as mentione it is in race trim.
Interesting about the rear end twitchey. It has a Harrop trutrak in it. I know the preload was out a bit and I wanted to get that adjusted up here to suit me. Other than that no idea. Will do some testing
Gear box sounds right, got to love the ripshift
Power sounds like it is coming on exactly where I want it.
I had the teins set to 16 full soft for being stuck on a truck going down south so I guess APS did not adjust it. With them on hard it make a very big difference to damping and handling. I guess that would of been the issue. Also all the set up has been done with semis slicks in mind.
I have all the good superpro and noltec gear under there. All bushing are upgraded to good stuff.
THe clutch sounds good. Looking forward to that one. I am very glad you did not stall it as sometimes those clutches can be a real pain. Good result actually. I stalled the old Tex a number of time when I first had it.
You done well. Good job
Yes the 8TB intake noise (love the way you put what it sounded like). I have heard about how they sound and I am hangling out for that one
Great to hear about the tune and it feeling good. Lots and lots of time went into that. And it stayed on LPG etc which is great.
The airbag light gets reset after I change the seat over for race meets. I told Frank not to bother as soon as it gets back the race seat goes in anyway. The airbags side and front still do work just the warning is a reminder that the SRS switch was disconnected at some stage. With the race seat in they are disconnected. Dont want to smash a ripple strip and one of them go off like what happened in the avalanche when I hit that gutter that day.
Anyway very much apreciated for your time today and the running around. Glad you enjoyed the drive. Shame about the transport back home though.
If I am down that way one day I shall give you a bazz and get we will have to have a ale and likewise if you ever visit. i will book the valley for you to go for some laps and not worry about cameras etc
Cheers

true trac hey! i have one ready to install! i did like it, but i think a combination of the tyres and the no back seat would be the noise I was hearing.
What diff gears does it have? cruised nicely in 6th.
I was going to comment that my konis on full seemed harder, but thats why, u had it on soft. felt nice as a daily though, if you reinstall seats you wouldnt know its a monster!
I noticed you had a similar (albeit) smaller strut top plate to strut top spacing as I do, do you notice that when you ramp the damping to full?

Well the day have come and the car is back home. I went for a quick spin and all seem good. As promised I did a video of the drive so I will put that int he camera development thread to save doublein up vids.
Some feedback.
Started cold no problems and I thought it was stalling but it seems it idles at a low rpm. About 600 to 700 if that. The clutch was a bit tricky to find the take up point but it feels stock like pressure and very easy to get used too. I stalled it once but after that I got used it it by 5 minutes of driving.
The engine note sounded deeper but the exhaust sound the same db. The idle is pretty agressive but nothing silly at all. Just a slight runble but no sign of the surges you hears i.e it goes bubu buba buba and not brum brum brum.
You can hear the induction noise from teh 8TB easy as once you start to give it a little. It is quite a uniques sound and very angry roar. I have some video of that too.
Power wise it is very good. Not quite I was expecting as I was planning for a real power band type feel once the cam kicked in but there was no sign of that and I mean no sign at all. it puts around like a stocker and from about 2500 throught to 7000 it just hauls an the rpm shoots up very quick. Very suprising too feel that. Maybe the 8TB calmes it down a bit, I am not sure. As for throttle responce it is instant, like touch the pedal and the engine does what you want almost immediatly. I did not do that before.
I have not really given it much other than a quick squirt as my back is playing up so I dont think I could handle it today. Maybe tomorrow. Left traction control on etc.
As for the LPG. Totally un-noticable it is even there. THe little thing on the dash tells you when you are on LPG and can switch over from LPG to petrol as I please. The tank does not take up any where near as much room as others have said. It is bugger all actually. No extra holes on the side of the car etc. Some say they can head the injectors and the LPG pumps but I can not hear any of that. Maybe the buggers need a louder exhaust. In all honesty even with the windows up I can not hear the pumps and i have 2 of them.
Lots o fthings planned over the coming two weeks so plenty more updates to come. I will see if I can get the new spoilers on and maybe get the bonnet scoop on there to give this sucker nice cold air. I have a plan all worked out with that and it should work great. (I know not IPRA legal but fun for now)
As always lots of photos

I went for a lap around the block and to fill up with gas. About all I could muster (fkn bad back). It took 55 litres of gas and the guage did not change but it may take a bit to register.
Also I took it to redline for the first time and it seems to be about 6700 or so. I thought it was going to be 7000 but maybe that much was not needed. It hits the rev limiter very hard so it was a hell of a shock to be reving then wham redline. It revs so fast youd dont get enough notice with the shift light. Might have to adjust that a bit.
As for power it all seems good. Pretty hard to tell it has 320rwkw as it is always on the power and no real low rpm low power spots. Very smooth delivery that is for sure.
It is still a bit tricky to get off the line due to the low idle but that will come in time. The clutch is actually lighter than stock or the tex by a margain. The misses confirmed this too as she took it for a drive around. Little bit suprised by the clutch but the changes can be very fast as it has a high take up point so just a quick dab on the pedel and change gears.
It is also noisier by a fair margain too. Makes a hell of a racket coming towards you and going away. Sweet as.
So I am looking forward to this sunday to let it loose.

Factory tacho is dampened to ensure the needle doesn't bounce around.
If you logged RPM you'd most likely find that 6700rpm on the tacho was 7000rpm in reality.
My VT used to bounce the limiter when stomped in 1st at 6100rpm (according to the needle) with the limiter set higher than that.

Bit of feedback from sunday
First 3 laps was all good then I think I hit a ripple strip the wrong way and damaged a front tyre. It eventually went flat and buggered it self.
Also the new power steering pump seems to have died. I have some more checks to do before confirming. It is ok at revs and at idle no PS at all so it is ether a leak or the pump is dead.
Power wise was no change and the speed on the straight was no change. I am a bit wary of this as it will take time but I thought more power = more speed on the long straight but no go with that.
The next meet is on the 16 August so hopefully a better day.

With a bit more thought time, your lack of extra speed on the straight could go back to your entry speed onto the straight.......with a deflating tyre I would think there is a very good chance you were slower at entry and subsequently slower at the end.
You need a datalogger of some sort. If you don't have anything at all, I will bring my performance box up when we come do Darwin next month so at least you can get some basic driver feedback from your track time.
Going back over my data told me so much about my own inconsistency early on. Now I use it to see where hundredths and thousandths are lost on each and every lap. It has definitely helped mw with much more consistent lap times.

Garry you are right I do need one of them things. My mission was to get 95% car complete then go do those fine tuning bits. I would say I need something like that now to sort out the wing, get some entrance speeds logged etc. As mentioned there is a good possibility that my entrace speed was down as that tyre could of been going flat after the second lap.
In short I need more track time to do some more assesments.
A new tyre is on its way up so buy buy to $620 but it is a 2008 make so no discounts. The replacement PS pump is on its way up too.
To answer some of the other information I posted earlier.
My redline is 6800 as per EFI live, the throttle position sensor is correct when it says 80% but in reality the TB blades are at 100% open. Something to do with the 8TB intakes and the TPS fueling. That is from Harrop too.
Fuel compumption I have not even started that but for not I am not fussed. I took off today and give the car a bit and it definitially goes harder so it is not in my head I am sure.
Drags on this Friday night and the next round of circuit racing is on the 16th August. All good once I get the pump and tyre fixed.
