Maybe everyone knew this already, but Shannons policies on modified cars are really great.

I just signed up for under half what my existing broker (Allianz underwritten) was charging me.

It's a weird feeling having to give evidence that you are a car forum member and go on drive/track days before they will give you a policy :)

They are awesome with claims too. Just made one today. Done in 5 minuits and the inspector is coming out this afternoon to give the approval to get the parts on order. If all goes well I will be on the road by the end of next week. Most time is the freight.

The only probvlem iv had with shannons is that they are upping my premium atm, hopefully a phone call sorts it out.

I know if you are a cams member they give discounts as i have that one. I tried the track day insurance but they have very specific restrictions on that and bacically I have no hope of coverage. It is the club racing insurance but restriced to pro drivers with test cars, race driving instructurs and cars of a vintage nature .i.e over 65 years old. It does not say that in the policy but feel free to ring them, you never know they might say yes. Choice of repairer is a good thing too.

Through the circuit racing and car shows I have got to know the local shanons reps so I guess they might of known the plate and took care of it. The basic parts got on order this afternoon but depens on if theyre is anything wrong underneath when I get the car back.

Hmmmm very interesting indeed......seems like there could be a bit of hit and miss with them.I don't think my car is too modded just yet but i'll keep them in mind down the track.

Thanks for that bit of info mate and i hope it all goes well getting your daily fixed :)

Yep. Another vote from me too. Gave me a marginally cheaper quote than other insurers but I told them I'd think about it. They rang me a week later and dropped a few hundred bucks off the original quote. Pay by the month at no extra cost too.

I stayed with them for 12 months or so before pulling the pin. Cancelling the premium was no dramas/hassles either. They cancelled immediately and issued me with a credit for the days of cover remaining in the month.

I provided a couple of photos Kyle was gracious enough to take of me at the drag strip and a dyno day.

For some reason they were skeptical that a Calais was a racer :)

But yes, Shannon are da bomb

Then when I added a second car to be insured by them, it was literally $100 more a year for full comprehensive

Very happy with Shannons

I got a different feeling towards Shannon's, i had insurance with them for a few years and had no complaint , the policy premiums where getting jacked up every year, and the agreed value was dropping fast to a very average market value based on other cars with 100,000+km on the clock (based on the red book or glasses guide), my VY2 has 28,000km's on it now from new.

I had some young bloke on the phone and when i asked for more coverage i was told to bring it in for an assesment, i had the same young fucker come out and tell me he can't give me anymore coverage without checking the condition of the car, km's, reciepts etc.

i was told to try GIO Custom car insurance and was impressed by there service and agreed coverage after assesment at a very competetive price including all mods, choice of repairer etc.

If i had a "Classic" car i may insure it with Shannons, for a late model modded car that we can pour a fair bit of coin into i would rather be covered to get me back into the same position within reason in the event of a total loss.

I have heard that some Shannons branches can be great however, i think i may have had one guy on a bad day.

Earlier on, i didnt have much luck with Shannons. They didnt want to insure me because i parked my car in a (security) carpart in the city. The response was "we're not interested in that sort of thing". WTF? So that initially pissed me off, the way they wrote me off so quickly like that. As it turns out my work carpark is a lot more secure than my garage at home (with access cards, security guards, cameras etc). They didnt know that, but also didnt seem interested. To be fair i suppose most people leave unique cars at home tucked away for weekends only.

But after all the (constant) good reports, and recommendations through friends, i tried them again, and glad i did! Erik and i found someone within the company who is great to deal with. I think that's the trick with Shannons; find someone who understands your situation and only deal with them if possible. Maybe it shouldnt be that way (or maybe it should?)

Just guessing here, but I think because their product isnt really like other pasterised/homogonised and sterilised insurance products, by the nature of that type of business (specialised insurance for enthusiasts) there is a greater element of subjectivity required by their reps. That can work in your favour or against. I think if you have a crappy experience with them, try again with another rep.

Has anyone gone through the claim process with Shannons? I would be interested to hear how they went.

Your experience sounds familiar to me Duncan, they can be very hot and cold. I think i just got onto the wrong guy when my renewal came around. I was dissapointed with the way i was treated by this young bloke and thought they would have had someone else that 'specialised' in doing valuations and actually going over the vehicle rather than one of the same phone guy come down stairs and do it. I was more pissed off at them wasting my time.

I understand your point about main stream insurance companys, that is why i went with GIO Custom Car, it is a seperate arm from the GIO mainstream insurance and seem to be competing for a cut of the market share when it comes to modded/classic cars.

When renewal comes around i will possibly try Shannons again.

Have you got a direct number to the guy your dealing with or are you lucky enough to get the same guy on the phone on the main number or ask for him by name?

Thanks Dunc, my renewal will be coming back around soon and as i said in my original post, i had no complaints with them.

My cousin has made a not at fault claim with a Phase 2 GT and from what i heard they are very good if it comes to a claim.

But i think the important thing is to have an agreed value that can be agreed by both parties and not a mainstreem vehicle value guide when your insuring modified and classical vehicles.

I went through the claims process. Had the incident at 9.30 Friday. Called shannons at 10.00 and got a claim number within a few minutes and they SMS it to me to my mobile. Took the car to the local smash repair place that I have used before and he did the assessment. (a truck sprayed my car with stone chips so not a crash when I used this smash repairer and it was a local council who paid). It is your choice of repairer. He wrote it up by lunch for me. The shannons assessor went there about 3.00 the smash repair bloke said and approved it. All the parts are on order now but I forgot to ask if I get a new front spoiler. Either way I am not fussed.
It is a smaller town and getting a assessor out on the same day is good going so might of been lucky there but either way the responce and service is great. So easy. 20 years of driving without a single claim and when I do need one it is a piece of piss. Makes me happy.

First claim for me.
My old man has driven millions of km over 60 +years without a single car accident or insurance claim. My mum only once crash but that was a drink driver who run into her but she got over it. (you wonder why I hate drink drivers)

I just switched over to Shannon's seems like a good move so far. Saved about 400 bucks a year, agreed value went up by 3500 and excess dropped by 1600!

The rep was pretty helpful, asked a LOT of questions about whats done to and what i use it for, i was a bit worried i wasnt going to 'pass' because it wasn't modified enough :drivin:

I half expected they would want to inspect it but cover was given over the phone.

Another bonus is theyll insure our other car (boring econobox) now that we are on board with them...will definately be giving them a call come renewal time.

I've got the white SSled with Shannon's the 2000 Echo and home contents policy too with them and have saved a bundle in doing so.
One thing you should check with Shannon's if switching over from another mob is to carry over (if you have it) your life time 60% no claim bonus. They will houour it if you have it, just need proof from your past insurer.

Shannons got the bomb from me, i made a claim at the start of the year due to the hail damage received in decembers sydney hail storm. They were grate with the claim, no hassles at all but due for renewl time and the up my premium about $300 and classed me as at fault. I checked with nrma again and hooked up with them with the rest of my policy's and saved me nearly $1000 off my premium, i checked with nrma about hail damage and whether they class hail damage as at fault and they dont.
Ihad previously checked with nrma about insurance for my ve ss and they wanted over $600 a year more than nrma as well.
Shannons 0
NRMA 4 policy's

I got a quote on Home / Contents from Shannons ... came out $100pa more than I'm paying with NRMA, even after some discount adding it together with the Coupe 4 ... so I'm still with NRMA, @ ~ $1,800pa

They were about 10 per month cheaper for home and contents up here. The part I liked was the $10,000 in enthusiast cover for all the spares and car gear lying around the house. Spare spoilers, roll cage, sets of tyres/wheels etc. All adds up. Just saves itemising them on other insurance companies. It is all under 24/7 video camera and on alarms like the rest of my house but still good to have anyway.

I originally tried Shannons but they didn't want to know me because I use the car for business.
I swapped to Ryno Insurances a couple of years ago (from Suncorp) and premium dropped to $940 (business use) including all mods and a handsome agreed value and saved me $600.
Now I've had to make a claim and they have been exceptionally helpful. I called for a claim form and they emailed one to me on the spot and I sent it back with photos of the damage (someone crunched my door in Bunnings car-park) and the $2600 claim was approved in 48 hrs without even inspecting it.

Back with NRMA for that now but cars are with Shannons.

Just insured my other project (a HX 308) this afternoon with Shannon's. Saved 10% on premium due to their multi-policy scheme.

I was originally with NRMA however they charged me 4 times (close to 3K) that of the policy I now get with Shannon's. So NRMA can go :flip2:

I'm with them as well(All 4 cars)... paying just under 2k per year, agreed value, 70% NCB fo life with all cars insured well above market value but their Home/Home contents insurance is lacking in certain areas.

AAMI wanted 5k just for the clubby and forget about the wifeys BM, the dam thing is only worth 5K and they wanted 3k per year for 5k BM'er???? WTF!!! :faint::flip2:

Im with Shannons and always have been. When I had my modified VL they insured me. When I got my XR6T at 20 they were the only ones that would insure me. And now I have the VE with them too. They are great with modifications too. Just ring up and let them know what you’ve done and they list it on your policy. When the VX was still registered, it was insured with them too, and I called them up to add the brake upgrade, and a few other things, to the policy and I told the guy that I’d upgraded the brakes and he basically knew what I’d done before I even told him. I was speechless.
So they get 3 thumbs up from me. Yes, three.

As i've said before,i always thought that these guys were a bit of a 'hit an miss' type thing when you ring em' up but i gave it a crack last Tuesday none the less.....a complete waste of my time as it turned out

At the end of the day it didn't matter about my driving record and that my last fine was way back in the late 80's......it didn't matter that my ride was not heavily modded and well maintained with very low k's........it didn't matter that my no claim at 65% and guaranteed for life and that my last claim and 'not at fault' i might add was over 10 years ago......it didn't matter that i could prove that i'm an enthusiest when it came to my ride.

When it came down to it i was knocked back because i didn't have a garage and wasn't able to secure my ride at night......can you fuken believe that :weirdo:

Am i missing something :dunno: wtf is with that

That surprises me Nick.

I was with NRMA for nearly 20 years with NO claim. (Multiple Cars) When I got 'minor' mods done, (ie) tune, zorst CAI, I did the right thing and informed them, then they had a tele hook up with the underwriters, and promptly flicked me.

I signed up with Ryno, halved the premiums, and couldnt be happier.

Glad to hear that.

I have heard of people getting the 'Dear John' letters from Ryno, but they happily renew me every year and even offer pay by the month with very little premium increase. (if any) I guess it pays to be a tad older than 40 and have a low risk postcode.
