Well first of hi, as I thought it was time to introduce myself.
Bit about me, well am a pom, that lives in Newcastle, been here for the last 7 years on and off, working for a Engineering company.
Love anything to do with motor sports, engines etc (like everyone on here)
My car, I have a Holden VZ SS Ute m6 with a few mods at the moment:
K&N pod filter set up
1 3/4" 4-1 short headers
2.5" twin cat back
original cats
Exhaust cut outs just after cats
lowered on king springs
Koni yellow shock
re-bushed on super pro bushes
HSV premium brake upgrade 4 pot from and back
356mm disc's front
330mm disc's rear
Billet short gear shifter
And that’s about it at the moment, al attach some pic's at the bottom
Ok questions and help time if you could.
In the next few months I will have all the $ together for some more mods to my ute. I am looking into keeping the engine N/A, the ute will be my weekend car and gets used for manly on the road (not city) and prob the odd track and drag day a year
I have been looking at changing the 346 ls1 (57K on the motor) in my ute for a new create engine and having it stroked. Ether a l98 to 402 or a ls3 to 416.
My question is, is it worth the extra $'s for a ls3 over a l98? Also will i get the power down on the road? I under stand that it comes down to throttle control, but I don’t want to be spending this cash and it just smokes the rubber all the time.
Oh and the diff, stay with 3.46 ratio or 3.7 -3.91?
Any help would be very help full
Cheers
Lee

Welcome aboard mate :welcome:
The ls3 is a strong base to work off if the folding stuff allows it, my best advice would be to buy a block and build an engine to your specs and application...find a reputable engine builder and he'll steer you in the right direction.
Never could fathom why crate engines are so popular (ie l98).. by the time you change everything over there is very little difference between a new stocker and a custom forged engine built to your specs...and no doubling up throwing new OE parts in the bin to replace with new aftermarket parts when the need arises :up2sum:
However going down this path will result in sustained loss of traction every time the right foot is applied....a set of semi comps may be a wise investment :drivin: good luck!

Welcome Lee... and I'm in the same boat as you.
My LS1 in the clubby is a little tired and would love to go with an LS3 but the L98 is just as strong base to start from and half the price(LS3=6.7k, L98=3.3K).... decision, decision, decisions...

if i was to go stroker i.e. ls3 379 to 416 would become lazey? i.e. not want to rev? am just asking as am not sure!

Hi Lee.
Nice ute, probably could not find to many 400 + ci engines that are lazy ,check out some build prices from some of the rep builders.I think some have good deals at the moment.
Diff , a 3.7 is a good compromise imo.

thanks for that, yeah 3.7 should work well on the road. Al give the man who am wantig to build my engine a call in the week, and put some of my ideas and concerns to him.
cheers

416 out of an Ls3 is only a 4" stroke, the same as an LS7 so you wont have any problems with it being lazy. I run a 4" stroke in a 6 ltr block (402ci) and that made power to 8500rpm but we only turn it to 7500 so it doesn't shorten engine life.
I'd go with 3.9 gears, they make a good all round ratio with a manual.

Cheers Saj thats just what i was looking for, i was just a little concerned that the engine would become lazy, but a 4" stroke in a 4.06" would rev nice as you said with the LS7

Lee on the odd occasion when i do fluke a half good run at the strip,i am going accross the line at 6500 rpm at nearly 130 mph in fourth with 3.7's and am actually thinking about putting the 3.4's back in.
I was thinking the 3.9's might be a bit high but as saj said he is spinning to 7500 if you are going to rev this high they should be ok otherwise i would stick to 3.7's.
Just my 2 cents.

yeah i see where your coming from, i wont be reving that hi to a longer diff might be a good idea, might even give the standed 3.46 diff a run first to see how she goes.
thanks again all for your help cheers lee
