Hey Wombie. If you are interested in unlocking his Wii when he gets it, and you know a bit about downloading, you may want to make sure he doesn't spend any hard earned on games.

Did you bother to read the thread in it's entirety up to the point when you decided to reply?

I have 2 teenage girls that do exactly the same thing.......they look but do not see, hear but do not listen you'd think by now i'd be used to it.........but i'm nowhere near it :headbang:

Hazza it looks like you may have started something here with the saving of some 'hard earned' :yep:

LOL.. Didn't think there were that many Wii gamers on here. They are bloody good fun though aren't they.

Okay well a quick history lesson to start off.

2006 - Wii launched. Wii mod chips begin. Expensive, don't work with all games.
2007 - Nintendo change the security chip so existing chips don't work. New mod chips developed.
2008 - Nintendo chop the 'mod' pins off making it harder to solder the chip. Wiiclip and other workarounds are made.
2008 October - Nintendo hit back against the mod chippers and now cover the 'mod' pins with high temp epoxy (1000degree?) so that mod chips are no longer usable.

We got given our Wii for christmas so suffice to say its post October 2008. Bugger I thought. After doing alot of reading I found out the only real way to hardware mod chip this revision is to buy a 'old style' Wii DVDRom which does not have the high temp epoxy. Then buying a mod chip, then soldering it on. This is a 250+ dollar proposition, for a 300 dollar console, bugger.

Not to be deterred I did some more reading, and found mention of a 'softmod'. Interested, a did a further 10 or so hours reading and viola 6 days after recieving my shiny new Wii I had unlocked it and I was playing, I mean testing game backups.

The softmod is a software modification allowing burnt backups of games to be used. It is free and does not require any opening up of the Wii or any soldering. It is also better than a mod chip as it doesn't need upgrading like mod chips do. The only requirements are a SD card, wireless router so the Wii can hookup to the net via wireless, and an original (or rented) copy of Zelda the Twilight Princess (I hired Zelda from VideoEzy for 7 bucks).

The best guide I found is this one (http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-faqs-guides-tutorials/7199-3-1-3-4-twilight-downgrade-starfall-gammatutorial.html). Takes about 30 minutes to do. Warning: Make sure your wireless connection is solid before doing the steps as there is a chance you could brick your unit if it is interrupted. Get well acquainted with the steps before you attempt it. Disclaimer: I take no responsibility for any problems encountered while doing this :)

Thanks for the guide on the "how to" Hazza the Possum thinks that she'll be able to manage that no probs :D Connor is nearing the $200 mark so almost half way there although he has casually mentioned that the Nintendo DS (i think he said) looks cool

Check the latest sales for target, k-mart, big w and dick smiths. Play them against each other especially dick smith who are easier to bargain with. Cheapest I saw was $386 big W. Dicky should meet and better it. Take the catalog with you.
Nealy there with the money raising. I like the way you are doing it.

Thanks for the tip mate and the beauty about playing those two against each other is that when a deal is struck,i can get a discount at either one also :woohoo:

So we might be closer than first thought and doing it this way it teachs him the value of money to a degree.

Well Connor finally got his Wii on Friday just gone and absolutely loves it :)

We both would just like to thank those people who purchased an item along the way as it got him over the line a whole lot quicker  not to mention the hard work he put in himself to earn some extra coin!
