Sounds great mate, I take it this isn't going to be driven anymore ? Can't wait to see how it all looks when you're done.
:yike:
willbe interesting to follow progres son this.
What happened to the DMS? (maybe i already asked that..)
VooDoo
04-03-2009, 07:43 AM
Yes it will be driven. One of the challlenges is to make it "show room" but able to be cleaned as yes ill still race it, drive it and show it.
DMS is up front Duncan. I do have an eye on your lower control arms and Bilstien strut tops btw...

That'll be pretty cool when its finished, keep the progress shots coming.
I'm guessing its being retired from strip duties, i broke 3 of them in my ute.... I got good at swapping them out with a wheel alignment to follow!
I do NOT envy you lol Make sure there are lots of pics! May i ask why you have decided to go with the Zymol?
Personally i would lay down a synthetic base such as duragloss or Zanio then top it with the Zymol for that bit extra
VooDoo
04-03-2009, 09:28 PM
I prefer the wet look of the Zymol than the Zaino (i have both) and the titanium lasts for ages anyway. Ill try a few different things im sure. The new detailing shop will have a hoist for a reason.
Put the Zymol over the Zanio and you get the best of both worlds!! lol Cant wait to see what its like when its all done

Can you explain the 8 rib set up please. You would need a 8 ribbed 2 belte balancer and a 8 ribbed a/c pulley also to go with those 4 pulleys in the picture above. Or is there another way.
Just confused.

I sorted this out, the a/c and the two small tentioner belts stay as stock. All the rest get replaced. Hope that is correct.
Anyway I will grab a set including the balancer Voodoo.

Correct, you dont need to do the Air cond, it says stock. The PS pump is a real PITA to get off but holden have a special tool. The Alternator and idlers are easy. Ill also have a waterpump one coming out soon but i need to find a better way to remove the old pulley as i killed a brand new pump this week trying to get it off :( (yes id started to polish that up to)

TA mate.
Got some coil brackets test coated in the same colour as the K frame will be. Came up really nice with a nice metallic through it. It was a custom colour to match the car so i had to buy 2 boxes of powder to get the colour just right but im pretty happy with the results. Main section is now smoothed and getting done now and just awaiting a press to remove the hubs so i can get the lower swing arms finished then its time to start putting it back together. Diff is now rebuilt as I smashed a set of Cryo treated stubb axles and destroyed everything internally. I did get to reuse the housing so it wasnt a complete loss. Now have a Kaaz in there and some now goodies plus GFORCE's driveshafts to go back on..
Ill post the pic's when i can get them off the phone

^^^^ I was going to go down the same track as you with the under carriage, but when I found out it will put me up to the "Elite" class at Summernats, I decided against it!
VooDoo
31-03-2009, 06:39 PM
If all goes to plan i hope to give that class a nudge in a few years with the things i have planned. At least with local shows it will be a bit different as many dont seem to go the extra efforts (and realsiticly, its actually not that hard to do even with basic spanner skills)
Just takes time and care which doesnt cost a lot of $$ really. ALL of the chromework, powdercoating, polishing etc is less than 1k so far.

Progress shots
Main section of the K frame is smoothed and is off for a chemical bath, etching and 3 stage powdercoating. We are doing a silver as the first coat, 2nd coat is a secret atm and then finally a coat of blue over the top. (see test peices at the bottom of this post)
http://www.oz8.org/gallery/albums/Kframe/30032009158_G.sized.jpg

http://www.oz8.org/gallery/albums/Kframe/31032009163_G.sized.jpg
I got my coilpack brackets done with this 3 stage proccess with took a while to get right as the colour was hard to match, get the metallic content right and and i wanted a slightly darker blue close to edges with the silver showing through in the open areas. To say the powdercoater went beyond the call of duty is an understatement (DAMN i need to get a decent camera though)

nice colour i like that blue
the other shots look like chrome, the metal seems to get shiny, or just appears so in the photos
VooDoo
01-04-2009, 10:50 PM
Metal is shiney not chrome but its smoothed out and all the weld spatters, lumps and bumps removed and then polished to removed sanding marks ready for powdercoating. I was tempted to polish the lot and clear anodise it to keep it shiney but i like the blue and there are a few chromed bits to highlight it in any case.

Coilpacks are mounted on the chassis rails behind a stainless heat sheild. The are still on the stock brackets with some ali standoff's. Ill post pic's when they are done.

best way to polish sand cast alloy,
and where are the bearing for the pulleys going? can you PM me a price for standard replacement pulleys but metal (not plastic), just for v6 idle 6rib?
Thanks!

These are 8 rib for the LS1. I havent played with V6's for years.
Bearings fit in the middle of the puleys and are held in with a curclip

ah yeah, look good.
well the 6 rib wouldnt be hard. could send up a plastic one that you could model. would just be looking for plain alloy, no coating.
let me know what you think and maybe a price via PM.

how are you polishing? sand paper or a rotary tool?
Both. I have a pretty decent collection growing of air tools, flap disks, dremel attachments and 2" pads. Still havent found the perfect tool to get into gaps and 90 degree bends yet so just focused on the larger flat areas. I have a heap of 400-1200 grit Wet/Dry papers which i use by hand. Not too bad an effert for my first big job.

How are you deciding what should be blue, chrome, polished etc.
Also no offence please, but man you need a tad better camera considering the work you are doing here. It is awesome stuff and just without a decent meg camera it is not getting the detail your work deserves. Maybe in the future when you are reviewing your build it might help too.

I like my bling a bit no question and I admit it which is importiant I think. My theory is nothing wrong with bling as long as it has the go and reliability to back it up
Maybe a bling thread so people who like bling can put there examples in there and those that done like it dont read it.
Why not. (I am not starting it though but I have a few examples now and even more when I get my car back)

I like the bling here, no need to change threads. There is some serious hard work and hours put into Stu's stuff - personally by him. Its not a matter of ship it off and get someone to make it bling. He is actually on the sand paper and wet and dry!
Still reckon a better camera would do all those hard hours justice though. :whip:

Great work Stu - when does it all go back together?
Im respraying the whole underside then that can start being put back together. Just waiting on the modded rear end (lower K frame bits) but the rest is done. Engine is out now so i can start work on cleaning that up and the gearbox. IM hiding some wiring and AC lines, ABS lines, Brake lines etc plus replacing all the hoses with Braid.
I'm aiming for a top 10 finish at Summernat in Jan with the blower fitted, 1000hp and full detail. Only thing i havent looked into is the stereo which might hurt me in the judging but im not a fan of the huge DB systems. I might just put in a CarPC.
Justin
29-05-2009, 11:29 AM
I must say Stu that I'm impressed by your efforts in this, it's going to look pretty serious when completed. My only suggestion is that the extra paintwork, and polished/plated finishes will actually detract from what a "Concourse" car should be and how a "Concourse" car would be judged, ie meticulously cleaned and prepared, but essentially factory finished car. Having said that, as far as judging for Summernats is concerned, your car should finish quite well, since I doubt they'd be using a "Concourse 400 (or 100) Point" scoring system.
With regard to the stereo side of things, by all means have a car pc system, but if you don't like the db side of things, that doesn't mean you can't concentrate on having a brilliant Sound Quality system with nicely hidden away component speakers, or even some compression horn type speakers, subtle sub-bass system etc etc.
Good luck with it, and I can hardly wait to see the finished product later in the year!

I have some horns here and a few AMP's. A nice set of 8" subs in the rear and maybe some splits should finish it off nicely. Was actually thinking of using the horns in the boot but really i have no idea about the stereo side of things.

Tubs go in on Wed and the seam welding underneath done at the same time. Rear swing arms are now notched and boxed so i can send them off to the powdercoater at last and get the rear end back together.
Seriously concidering some 20x8.5 and 20x10 billet rims atm but without the tubs and rear end in i cant trial fit. Might look at getting some @ SEMA this year.

The only change ill make on these is to remove the slight curve in the spoke and make them straight and the front surface completely flat to look like the blower/rocker covers.

From CLM:
Just for a laugh, the wheel made from 6061-O alloy loaded up with 2000Nm about the centre hub. This just represents the stress in the spokes and not the mounting holes. Total weight is 15.35Kg per wheel. I dunno exactly what the car would exert on it, I was thinking 2KNm was a fair guess and still account for a decent safety factor (although if you were going to actually build this you would take a lot more details into consideration but this was good for a laugh). Its COSMOSWorks in Solidworks 2009.

i would be putting in some forces to simluate pot holes, resistance from tyres also.
did you use bearing forces for the inner surface of the hub, as well as the force for the weight of the car itself?
and you know 3d FEA is largely not the best... you will have to do quite a few different loading situations to find something reasonable
Here is a rough look at the rims we are making. [/IMG]

Making rims for a show car is very different to making track wheels. The stresses involved would be very different. Im actually making these myself (someone else is doing the drawing and i have a CNC that we make the supercharger parts on). I wouldnt be confidant putting the wheels on a track or subjecting them to huge stresses unless you were to get them evaluated by an engineer.

Nice trailer Stu, should keep the GTO nice and snug.
Do yourself a favour and get some of these for the floor
If you wanted to get real tricky, you'd get two sets, and just remove/refit the rears when loading/unloading for the ultimate in vehicle security.

Thats what im doing but haven't found where to buy them from yet. I was going to use chains to bring back the shell from NSW as there is no weight in it atm. Im not a huge fan of the cheapo straps.

If you go to http://www.ekebol.com you can get them from there, they're the guys who build all our trucks. They're based up here, (Enterprise St Kunda Park, about 3-4k's off the highway from the Nambour/Maroochydore Roundabout) so if you want I can pick them up for you no dramas. I'm sure that given your contacts down there, you'd have no dramas finding a machine/exhaust shop with a competent welder to install them.
They come in two styles - one style requires the cutting out of strips in which to install the keyway tracks giving a flush mount, and the other style are a raised design, which can be simply welded onto the surface of your trailer. These only raise the height marginally, but if the GTO is rather low, I'd advise having them flush mounted.
The straps supplied are rated to 2500kg each. In 11 years, I've broken one when tensioning it, but it was worn through and due for replacing anyway.
