View Full Version : My GODZIRRA!!
I picked up GODZILLA today at about 10am, delivery experience was pretty good :)
Afterwards Erik and I went for a drive out to the Russo Workshop for a blat. Chris and Erik took it for a blast too.
Initial Impressions:
Seats arent made for fatties like me, looks like i have to lose some weight! Not to bad but i am guessing made for Japanese bums. The rest of the interior is SCHMICK. Totally perfect and i have no complaints. Everything seems pretty well screwed together i must say. The aussie cars don't get SatNav, nor CF Slot nor auto headlights btw. Personally, i dont care for all whizz bang telemetry stuff, maybe i will get into that later.
City driving:
This is NOT a car if you are looking for a luxo experience. The car feels EXTREMELY rigid and taut, and it tramlines quite a bit on crappy sydney roads, i'm not sure if that's due to alignment or the big tyres. The R35 is a bit of a gruff beast, with lots of whirs, clanks and clunking (ok i am exaggerating a bit, but it's not a quiet machine). Do i care? Not at all. This is a car for going fast around a circuit. It feels purpose built and there are compromises.
The gearbox is suberb with virtually instant cog swaps. I am still getting a few k's on the thing before putting the boot right in, so i dont really know what it's like to drive in anger just yet... i can't wait.
Oh, this thing gets NOTICED, no driving around in anonymous mode... it's not possible - people will pull up and start talking. Everywhere you go you just see huge cheesy grins!
Anyway, so far quite happy and can't wait to get the thing out to Oran Park next week!
Here are a couple of Pics, but they don't do the car justice at all. The car looks like the titanium colour in these pics, due to harsh light.

Yep, outstanding in the metal. Only had 47k on it at delivery. On the few occasions Duncan gave it a little squirt, felt very strong... puts you in the back of the seat.
My impressions from behind the wheel: very firm ride, but definitely liveable day to day. Steering is nice & direct. Drivers seat is snug, even for a lightweight like me. The gearbox is AWESOME, with instantaneous changes (Mick, makes you & I look like we shift soooo sllooowwwww ;)). I love the central tacho on the instrument cluster... very race indeed. Rims/tyres/brakes are HUGE. Leaning on the accelerator even slightly could see you lose your licence quick smart. I drove it home like a grandma.
Such a nice package inside & out. Love the electronic display... lotsa fun for the passenger :yep:. For its performance potential, great bang for buck. Should be uber when driven in anger :whip: . Guess Duncan should find out on thursday... giddyup man.

As others have pointed out not a good time to go for an old pacific run , double demerits + old pac+ large number of bikes = one of the most patrolled roads around ..
Not being judgemental but this would be a place to avoid ..

As for rear leg room, it's about 1/3 that of the Monaro. ie. it's basically useless. You can fit a 2 year old in (baby/booster seat) ok. Given i am a shortarse with the front seat forward so much, our 7 year old could JUST fit in the seat behind me. With a normal sized adult driving, or someone a little taller, there will be no chance with getting anyone back there. Four seater it just isn't... No point buying this as family transport.

Well that's interesting, in the pics it looked like the back seat would be useless for adults but ok for kids ... so I'm guessing that at 6 foot there wouldn't be much space behind me !!!

Well Dunc dropped in with the beast this afternoon ... what a car.
It looks much bigger in the metal than it does in pics, looks better too, I love it. Dunc chose the perfect colour. The interior is great, everything is right to hand and you feel wrapped in the car. I'm not real wide and those seats are SNUG, if you're a big guy with one on order you had better start working out. It's all very Japanese, dials and gadgets everywhere, but it all looks pretty cool. Love the central tacho and the start button is cool.
What's it like to drive ?
Like nothing else I've ever been in, it all feels so tied down. I know the term "corners like it's on rails" is thrown around a lot, but this really does feel like it's tied to the road when it's going round a bend ... spectacular. The brakes are insane, HUGE and very responsive. Didn't get a chance to wind it out (long weekend and all) but it's got HEAPS, more than you could ever use on the road, that's for sure. Lots of mechanical noise but I don't think that would worry me. The ride is very firm but far from uncomfortable, I could live with it day to day without any worries at all. Back seat is tiny, boots not much bigger ... but who really cares.
All in all, spectacular car. Thanks for the drive Dunc, you're a champion.
:woot:  :woot:
congratulations duncan when you go to dubbo you have to stop at blackheath and let me have a look there buddy.you could also have a steak at no extra cost.lol

Hey guys,
We took the R35 out to Oran Park GP circuit today, i needed some exposure to what an AWD Turbo can do and how it does it -BEFORE- the 2nd round of the NSW Supersprint series THIS WEEKEND. I've only driven RWD V8's on the circuit before. Anyway the R35 car is still a stockie except for a harness bar (although i didnt even fit the harness today) and a set of RE55's.. Stocker brakes/pads/fluids etc.
We were surprised to see the Donut King R35 Targa car turn up this morning, so we watched it for a while, cutting a few hotlaps. Awesome looking machine with a full cage, exhaust, tune, and running the stocker 35 dunlops. The cage in that thing looks like a nice bit of kit, built by Bond Rollbars.. i might look into that. Awesome.
So anyway it was time to pop this AWD Turbo cherry... but first up i thought we had better see what the stocker bridgestone tyres can do. After a few laps i ran a 1:19.9, which is 1 second faster than my PB in the munro around there (1:20.95). To be frank the car didnt feel too great on these tyres, lot's of tyre protest squeal and it felt a bit 'squirmy'. Apparently the stocker R35 Dunlops are a better tyre. Still, 1 second better vs the munro on the stocker R35 tyres was progress..... Keep in mind the munro had 500rwhp and RE55's. Anyway I think there is probably more time to be had with the stocker bridgestones (maybe another second or so) BUT it was time to try the RE55's......
We fitted the 295/35/18's all round.
Whilst the car looks a tad goofy running 18's (see pics below) the car was INSTANTLY transformed and confidence was there! It felt awesome, like night and day vs the stocker tyres. It was insane. Almost immediately improving 2.4 seconds more for a 1:17.5 second PB. I think i'm ready for the weekend! I think there will be more with experience, i should see 16's when i figure it out. I am absolutely wrapped.

It's very much a different experience Nick, especially getting used to the flappy paddle shifters. The car wont shift down if you have too many revs (not sure how many revs are too much..) so a bit disconcerting at 220km/hr approaching turn 1, and it doesnt change down. But i think i have that sorted now. The R35 has less punch than the monaro and you can feel it, there is a notible lag out of every turn with the GTR. But i think the R35 makes up for it via (higher/average) mid corner and exit speed.
It's a hoot to drive on the track, i am still figuring out the whole AWD thing. I dont think i was pushing the limits of the car more than say eight tenths or thereabouts. That doesnt mean i can go 20% faster, returns are ever dimishing as we all know. Obviously with the monaro you are fighting oversteer on every turn, not so with the R35. You point and shoot, with a little drift. You can feel the AWD system working (adjusting for slip) working the back wheels. You have to put your faith in the system, as you feel somewhat disconnected as the car drifts towards the turn 1 wall especially!
The most difficult part is adapting to something which is that much more capable, building confidence to let the car do it's thing. I've done countless laps in the monaro, feathering the throttle after each turn. The R35 has a much quicker average speed, i need time to develop confidence in the car, it just feel "unatural" really. All the insincts i have developed in the munro have to be "de-programmed".
:drivin:
There is a big shortcoming with this car - the transmission oil/temps. The official warranty mantra is - tranny oil temps over 120*c mean a tranny fluid change (@ $2k mind you)... the dealer (who has apparently done a Nissan track day) told me "don't worry you will never see 120* - we couldn't get close". Despite this, i couldnt get more than 3 or 4 laps before hitting 120*... so i'll have to address this problem with aftermarket oil and/or a cooler. Despite its weight, this car was made for the track.
Is it fun on the track? HELL YEAH.
The street is another proposition, you just can't use it to any potential on the street. One stab of the throttle and you are doing 100+km/h.. So you end up just putting along with traffic, bored as hell. I wouldnt buy one of these primarily for the street, you'll be wasting money and potential/purpose of this car.
Congrats mate :bravo: Must be an odd feeling to have spent so much time and money on your CV8-R only to better it's time first outing with a stock car. What a weapon of a thing! I recon the wheels look alright too :yep:

Wait till you experience a little 4 wheel drift at 150 + km/h mid way through turn 1 at Eastern Creek ... that'll wake you up !!!
:D
Sounds like you had a blast. Keep us posted on any changes, I'm also keen to hear how things go with Nissan as you progress with the car. Tranny Cooler sounds like it might be needed, funny how easily you can achieve things that they "have never seen before".

I REALLY like that pic thought Dunc, proof enough that the first mod of choice for any car that's considered a REAL car is the 0.2 guaranteed improvement TrackChat sticker. :bravo:
Can't wait to see it in person and FWIW ... I reckon it looks shit hot in the 18" shoes.
AWESOME!!! :yep:

You could see the difference between the street tyres & the RE55's even watching from the pitwall. Car looked like it was on rails off the bridge & down to Suttons with RE55; a little unsettled with streeters. Helps Dunc knows how to drive too :yep:. Hope he goes a 16 tomorrow at Oran Park. Should set the cat amongst the pigeons. With times like that, I reckon top 10 outright, a 2D win & possibly the 2D Oran Park lap record.
Good luck man :).
I'm also keen to hear how things go with Nissan as you progress with the car.
Nick, i dont think my car will ever see a Nissan/dealership workshop. They are too exxy and too anal about the whole warranty thing. They would have a heart attack if a) they were at the track with me the other day and b) know about the bits i have purchased, c) what i got up to today (pulled the bottom of the car apart to get at camber adjustment, jeez what drama) and d) all of the above.
I have put my faith in the aftermarket gods.
PS. A whole bunch of JDM guys have been surviving for about a year ok with their R35's - so i should be fine.

A new pb I believe ;) :yep:.
Wow, great times Dunc. Beating your PB after only a few laps...must feel good. :)
Itranny oil temps over 120*c mean a tranny fluid change (@ $2k mind you)
Wow. What would your average mechanic charge? Is it really that much more difficult than a tranny fluid change on anything else?
Heard that replacement pads and rotors on the V-spec were a $70k proposition...not cheap!
Enjoy it mate. :D
Cheers,
- Febs.

An interesting observation made while comparing both the OE rear 285 20" vs the 295 18" RE55... the 285 is actually wider than the RE55!

Febs, more to do with the price of the specific oil (that Nissan use) which is $100/litre & they only come in 20L drums.

Another option for a tad more tyre width for those that want 19s for these cars. Yoko Advan Neova 295/30/19. Outside width is 301mm with a od of 661. Still fit on a 10 inch rim too.
I wanted to get some for my bling wheels but atm $763 each is a bit much. Later on I will. That is allot of grip for anycar with semislicks at 301mm wide. I should be getting some cheepies tyres in 305 which is a tad too wide for a 10inch rim but they are only show wheels anyway so drive to a show and back. Thats it. Cheeper by a fair margain to get 305s than 285/295s.
Toyo also make the 888's in interesting sizes
This combo might work:
Front: 275/35/18 ($563 ea)
Rear: 315/30/80 ($587 ea)
They also make some 335's in 18"
I am told the R888's heat up much quicker than the 55's (good for sprints) but they go off faster too.

... first up i thought we had better see what the stocker bridgestone tyres can do. After a few laps i ran a 1:19.9.
Just as a comparison ... in this months Wheels Skaife took a brand spanker R35 around Oran Park on the factory tyres;
The result ... 1:18.08
Considering that was your first ever drive of the car Dunc, 1:19.9 is seriously impressive !!! That's some might nice driving.
Another point of interest, the slick shod R32 (the 1992 Winfield Car) did a 1:10.01.
does it say which tyres the Skaife R35 had (bridgestones or dunlops?)

Yep ... he had the Bridgestone RE070R ... "slightly worn"
ahh ok. I've been told the dunlops are quicker. Good effort for the bridgestones i guess.
Maybe he was taking it relatively easy and didnt want to break it.
So damn, the advantage of MS = 1 good set of RE55's!

I have a new found appreciation of this car after checking out the latest motor magazine. They had a comparo between a GT2 and the R35 at Winton.
Being at Winton, a track im fammiliar with really put things into perspective for me. The GT2 beat the GTR by about a second around the tight and technical track, and for more than double the price it should.
The GTR still stopped the clock at 1.33.5ish

Got two runs! first (10.8) warning, then 2nd (10.7 et) they cut off my wrist band, ha ha :) Was a great day though, relaxing for me. Funny having a drag day with essentially no car prep, weird actually.

All I can say is “amazing” you read and see clips on the net and TV but seeing one of these R35 GTR run a 10.7 with very little work, is just astonishing. There is all us rocking up with drag rubber, burn outs etc, and you roll through the water trap, stage and roll out 10.7, what a monster!!!
