painting plastic ?

hi,

i'd like to give the front splitter i recently purchased a fresh coat of matte black, but its currently in metallic black with big scratches.

whats the best way to get it back to plastic and how do i go about priming it ? never had any experience with painting.

Hey Buddy,

Welcome to the world of DIY!

With something like that i would recommend you sand it back, prime it with a coat or two with grey spray paint or normal primer then do 3 light coats of the colour of your choice.

The right grit sandpaper im not sure what you would need but your local Repco etc would point you in the right direction.

Plastic is a buit trickier than metal.

You will need to strip it back to bare plastic then sand it so its quite fine. Once you have done that you will need to prime it with plastic primer. This is different to normal primer as is the paint. They have flex additives in them that stops it cracking when it twists.

There is a brand called plasticote that works well and comes in pressure packs. I would advise you spray it with satin clear as well to make upkeep simpler.
