View Full Version : EOI ... "Mini group buy" on helmets

DaveHAT
26-05-2009, 08:53 PM
In light of the helmet issue with the up coming track hire ... I figured I might ask if anyone was interested in a small group buy on FULL FACED compliant helmets.

No disrespect to those who've bought cheaper helmets but I figure we can possibly get a better quality helmet if we buy in numbers ... albeit smallish.

Please note ... THIS WON'T BE FOR EBAY HELMETS or $500 fancy helmets but aiming to get a good quality RJays (AS/NZS1698 & SNELL approved) helmet down from $180 to potentially $150 or less.

I checked these out at one of the local bike shops and they look like good quality, fitment and finish plus carry all the right labels etc.

http://www.mcas.com.au/_product.php?section=1&prodid=6460

I understand that the design may not be perfect for everyone but noting that we're on a VERY limited time frame ... if this was to proceed we need to move on the idea ASAP.

Please check the link ... and get back to me either here or via PM if you might be interested. I'd be looking at one week to finalise numbers and get moving on the idea.

Awesome idea Dave and thanks for the effort ... unfortunately I probably over-estimate the value of my head and I went for a fancy / expensive noggin protector. Actually it's not all that fancy really, no flash designs or anything.

I still have no idea if it's a waste of money or not, does a more expensive helmet offer better protection ??? Hope I never have to find out, but if it does I'd rather have it ... if it doesn't, I can live with the fact that I may have spent more than I had to.

No worries Bill.

I spoke to a local distributer today and he said if we can find 5 interested people ... $144 each.

SNELL2005A & AS/NZS1698 approved helmet.

Checked some out in the flesh and I gotta say they certainly look like a good thing. Probably a bit loud but not bad for someone wanting a good helmet on a budget.

Noting though that I'm no expert on helmets and the next version up was a HJC brand for $230.

Googled a review of these helmets and found this --> http://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/motorcycle-helmet/rjays-striker/

Understand completely Nick ... makes perfect sense. Ultimately it comes down to what the buyer is happy with. :)

No worries Dunc ... thanks.

Can everyone potentially interested get themselves to some form of motorbike shop and try one on for sizing and have a look at the designs for which stiker design they want/prefer.

Please note that I might not be able to get the FULL range of colours.

PM info.

Depends on how many people we get mate.

Less than $159.99 but how much less will depend on how many people want them.

I'm speaking with MCAS (the mob on the links) as well tomorrow and will be asking about pricing on a combo purchase price for plain and graphics RJays striker helmets.

Not being a pain mate ... I sorta need a definite answer. :)

Seeing as the bias is towards plain DONGHATS ... we'll simplify and focus on plain in either flat/gloss black or gunmetal grey.

If anyone wants a helmet with graphics please say so ... more than happy to try and see what we can swing. :)

Can everyone please check the range and indicate which you'd prefer.

PLEASE NOTE:
Try to get to a shop and try them for sizing. As I understand it helmets are a non returnable item so if it aint right when you get it ... TS! :poolaunch:

I saw that Daniel ... a good start but sizing (much like clothes) seems variable. My current helmet is a HJC XL, but I needed an XXL in RJays and if you read the review in the links above ... an RJays XL = a Shoei L?

I have a Rjays helemet and its great( not as bling as those ones), fairly light and meets all the requirements, a note to some CAMS are proposing a HANS compaitable helmet for state championship racing in 2010, so if your getting involved in anything more than 2s events it may pay to get a helmet with the HANS posts installed already.

Update (albeit not a big one).

MCAS have come back to me with an indication of what they would be prepared to do for us if we buy 5 helmets.

15% off purchase price regardless of whether you wanted graphics or plain.

By my read:

Black/Matte Black/Gunmetal grey = $136
Graphics = $153.

The other offer of $144 ea was from a local supplier solely for 5 striker graphics helmets. Checking with them re: plain strikers today.

Well done Dave. I am interested in the Striker Plain too.

My current helmet is a Nitro Racing and the size is "M" (see I'm not a big headed prick, maybe a narrow eyed little bastard :) )

Anyone know where the clossest shop to Botany that would have these to check the size?

I'll have to get onto this as I'm off for 2 weeks to Europe after this week.

Ok guys ... we've got 5 definites with a possible 2 more (which may mean it may be slightly cheaper but don't bank on it).

Can those interested please indicate EXACTLY which colour/design you want by next Tues in case they need to order colours/sizes. :)

Also ... if you're happy to use this sizing guide and accept what you get as a non returnable item ... indicate the size as well please. Otherwise go and try one on to be certain.

Those working in Sydney CBD ... there's a MCAS in Wentworth St if my memory serves me correctly.

Hey Dave,

Good idea - helmets can be a bit of a pickle to find a good one. Either you spend $150-$200 or it blows out to about $600 + dont know why im assuming better quality plastics, rubber, designs and lighter.

I bought a KBC helmet a year or so ago from MCAS as well, Its a great helmet and looks nice but why not have a look at these?

http://www.mcas.com.au/_product.php?section=1&prodid=8697

Dont know whether or no they suit your requirements but worth a look!

Thanks Alex ... appreciate the input.

Simply put ... so we don't over complicate the situation with too many choices is why. :)

Without knowing if it meets the requirements for drag racing at WSID it's not much help. Not meaning to be rude but we have a short time frame if this is to proceed and I could only research based on helmets I could actually look at myself before I posted seeking interest.

I didn't see any KBC helmets in my searching. When I knew that these RJays helmets carried both the AS/NZS standard PLUS a SNELL2005 rating (which is what we need) I figured go with them.

If people want to consider others ... and can confirm that they suit the criteria ... do some research & please post them up as there's always SOME room to move.

My preference is the RJays but happy to look at others that fit the criteria if others have ideas ...

Don't do anything yet mate.

We'll need to pay for 5 at once to get the group buy price. If it definitely goes ahead we'll need 5 confirmed buyers to get the quoted price of $136 or whatever it was.

Payment and collection information will be posted after Tues once we have definite numbers and know of the group buy if proceeding.

Update on pricing. Noting ... the striker range of helmets is currently on special @ 10% off. :headbang:

I re-approached mcas today with the increased interest on this purchase.

5 or 10 helmets ... they won't budge on dropping the RRP by 15%. (Which is trade apparently )

I can't find any other suppliers who'll have the ready supply other than the distributor and they won't deal direct to the public.

So mcas it shall be.

Sorry guys ... despite my worldly charms, I tried. :( Still ... a pretty good price for what these helmets are.

So ... THE FINAL BUY PRICE WILL BE!

Plain helmets - $136
Graphiced helmets - $153

Apparently you can get tinted visors for them so I might try and swing those into the deal as opposed to a price drop. See how we go. ;)

FWIW ... I also discovered that these helmets are AUSSIE MADE. Not that it makes a great deal of difference but ... nice to have in the back of the mind. :)

Not to further complicate the issue further but just so everyone knows what they're getting for their hard earned coin.

Included in the purchase price is:

Helmet with CLEAR visor (obviously)
Helmet bag
Visor insert (if you tried one one it's that thing that rubs on your nose)

HOWEVER:
If anyone's interested ... you can "upgrade" the visor with one of 2 options. These have also been discounted by 15% FWIW.

Dark smoke tinted (essentially black) - $25.50
Dark "iridium" tinted (Similar to what's fitted to Nick's SHOEI helmet) essentially black with either a blue, chrome or gold mirror finish - $34

PLEASE NOTE: These aren't legal for use on the road so apparently can't be included in the ORIGINAL sale.

Essentially it's 15% off whatever we buy (helmets or visors etc) no matter how many I push for.

Ok cool ... the $25.50 version?

Sorry for the confusion. They won't UPGRADE them as such in that you can't swap the clear for a tinted visor.

Apparently retailers aren't allowed to sell helmets with tinted visors but you can buy them aftermarket.

We should get the clear visor which comes fitted to the helmets for $136/$153 & you can buy additional visors for $25.50 or $34 EACH depending on which one/how many you want.

i.e. Your gunmetal jobbie would be a total of $161.50 incl the tinted visor.
I hope that makes sense.:faint:

Cool but ... which ones, what size and what visor options do you want Ken?

By all means drop in for a size confirmation but I don't think pickup that soon will be possible. It'll depend on a few things and to be honest I hadn't thought a great deal about how to get them to everyone.

I plan to place the order on Weds morning based on what I know & is posted at that time. Anyone wanting in after that will miss out unfortunately.

Once the order's placed ... everyone has until Friday OF THIS WEEK to make their payment into the TC bank account.

I'll probably be paying for the lot on my CC to make sure ALL the helmets/visors get the discounted price ... so PLEASE DON'T DICK ABOUT WITH MAKING PAYMENTS!!!

Once all that shit's done ... I'll post ETA on when they'll be ready for pickup/collection. That side of things might be a little hard to administer but I can drop helmets off to anyone on the Nth side of Syd on my way home and meet others wanting to collect at the designated mcas branch when they're ALL ready to be collected.

Dunno how to do it better than that but my brain hurts now. I may change my mind about this yet as I came up with all that dribble on short notice.

just out of interest does it need to be a striker ?
just ducked down to the auburn superstore to get fitted and the fit of the razor was a lot more comfortable than the striker for me.

if im able to grab one with the group buy, put me down for one rjay razor, medium in black red livery

2hrs ago you were out altogether due to needing to deploy funds elsewhere.

Which is it???

The helmets need to be AS/NZS1698 &/or SNELL2005A approved for ANDRA drag racing purposes. That's why the strikers were chosen.

From an organiser's perspective I'd prefer to keep it simple as it's a pain in the arse to be stuffing about with different helmets etc. I can only ask them tomorrow but they're likely to tell me to get stuffed.

Yes mate ... the hoochi mumma is fine as are all the striker plain and graphiced helmets.

They're the ones I've been negotiating for. :)

Cheers Dave.

As these are being organised for the drag day, why can't everyone collect theirs on the day? Make things a whole lot easier for you mate.

Cheers,

Scott

I'll probably end up doing that mate for those I can't access easily either at or to & from the shop when I collect them. Otherwise it's just more shit to bring on the day on top of wheels, jack, portapotty etc

Probably make a couple of drop off points on the way back ... such as Scotty's place on the North side, central coast etc for those that want them on the day etc.

All getting too hard really  but we'll get there.

Nice one ... the strikers being only $136 means you should be right with $64 to spend on corn flakes! :D

i'd still prefer the razor if possible, the fit of the striker for medium was too tight and large too loose.

if it ends up that i can't get one with the group buy, then so be it

You're a sucker for punishment Dave ... I think everyone owes you an egg & bacon roll on the 21st !!!

Although 12 egg & bacon rolls might slow you down a little ???

I know this shit isn't easy mate, it's a huge effort, hopefully everyone getting a helmet out of this realises that ... :yep:

Deposited $161.50 with description "scat2k3-hat"

Hope I got the figure correct.

I'll be at the drag day, but not running, so if you want me to organise the distribution and admin at the track, say the word.

Thanks Brett and for the offers of help guys. Happy to include you as well mate.

Thanks also to those who've started paying already.

CUTOFF FOR THIS GROUP BUY WILL BE 8PM TONIGHT.
THIS THREAD WILL BE CLOSED AND ANOTHER SETUP SHORTLY AFTERWARDS FOR PAYMENT INFORMATION ONLY. :)

It's not so much the actual physical logistics of it that's a hassle or stress but more the making sure everyone is sorted for correct size, payment, pickup blah blah ... that we get the best price possible and that everyone's happy with their purchase given that these can't be returned. :)

But hey ... I could've chosen not to do it. :slap:

If everyone benefits as a result then giddyup as I needed one myself. :woot:

Later days. :waving:

PS: 12 B&E rolls ... I reckon I could give that a crack but ... an additional weight disadvantage isn't something I really need. :lmao:

Hi Dave,

Went past today to try them on.

Sadly they dont fit my head properly, I must have an odd shaped head or something :dunno:

Might end up going with the Shoe I tried on.

Thanks for your efforts though mate
