View Full Version : Why you dont run the red
Had a small incident this morning with lady that went through a red light.
I was waiting to turn from Castle hill road into Highs road. I had a green light but no arrow so was waiting in the intersection for a gap. The gap never came so in accordance with the road rules i can turn on the red light. So i begun to turn then all of a sudden i see an echo go through the red light and head towards me. I accelerated to get out of the way and she locked the brakes and swerved but it was wet and she didnt turn much.
She managed to clip the back of my tray. Luckily it wasnt with much force so didnt spin me or anything. The cops came and charged her with neg driving or running a red light or something and I was found not be be at any fault (she took full responsibility, which was admirable) Could have been a lot worse if i was a few seconds later or she was earlier. She admitted to me and the police she had time to stop before the light but thought she would make it around me. She wasnt young either.
Damage to my car is a bent light protector which needs to be gently smashed back into place with a hammer and also quite a bit of her paint plus a bit of her light stuck to the tray.

Her car came off second best and needed to be towed (i told her to drive it so the police didnt need to be called but she insisted on it being towed)

So moral of the story if the light is red STOP lol

eerrr you can turn on the red? This isnt the USA and we dont have that rule here. Ive seen many people booked for it too.

Definitely legal in NSW. If you are turning right and have a green light but no arrow you are meant to drive into the intersection. You then wait for a suitable gap in the traffic before turning. If no gap presents itself you are allowed to turn when the light turns red. I only did my L test 5 years ago and my driver qualification test 2 years ago so its all pretty fresh

Great advice given. Pity she didn't take it. If you can safely drive it away, do it. Even if it were driven down the road and around the corner it may well have saved her the ticket.

If you have crossed the line into the intersection you are committed to the turn. I failed my P's test for not going through when the light changed because my front tires had gone over the line so i was committed to make the turn.

I am glad you aren't hurt Dan!
She would have had a good view of you waiting to turn.
In fact a good 100m clear vision leading up to where you were at the intersection.
i am very familiar with that intersection, I am there nearly every day!

Yeah she said that. She had no reason for not stopping. Its one of those silly things you do that you later massively regret i suppose lol

Yeah well ... you live in a state that thinks the sun rising < 5am makes sense ... they probably would think that waiting in the middle of the intersection and blocking all traffic until the next change of lights makes sense.
:stick:
As others have pointed out ... Dan was 100% in the right, you're supposed to wait in the intersection and if you haven't had the opportunity before the lights change you make your turn when they go red.
:yep:
You sure came out on top in that one mate, I remember making that right hand turn when there weren't even any lights there !!! Now I'm sounding old ...

Good thing noone was hurt (SANS the other woman's pride) & a bit of metal.
Don't worry too much about VooMoo ... he's special.
We'll all know those pics of his Caprice posted last week are the result of him running a red light. :chuckle:

That reminds me of something that happened yrs ago. The dentist i used to work for witnessed a pub fight, and as they carted one of the inebriated victims off to an ambulance( from memory he wasn't in too bad shape, just too drunk) he shoved one of his cards into the guys shirt pocket!! Carpe diem as they used to say!!
Although he never showed up to get his teeth fixed!
