View Full Version : Choppo and Dan's Travelling IPRA Roadshow
Thought a few of the guys on here wouldn't mind seeing some pics and vids from the various IPRA rounds that Chop competes in and I assist.
This is round 3 which is currently happening at Oran Park. If you have nothing to do tomorrow come down and have a look, say hi and enjoy some racing.
Here are some pics that i took from Yesterday. All going to plan ill get some tomorrow as well to throw up. Choppo can put his videos in here as well if he wants.
Anyway the photos
The 1st one was me getting my shutter speeds etc set up but i didnt realise it was on sepia lol

Nice spotting! :bravo:
My problems is ive had bugger all experience at OP - its really only my second time there, so every lap is a learning lap. If you took a photo of each lap around that same corner, i bet you would find a different line each time :chuckle:
Also, after my second lap on Friday when i came off the same corner because i missed the apex completely :scared: , i think my brain goes into auto pilot and says 'get in early':lmao:
Its the fact that its a blind corner over a rise, with the speed im carrying i have to pre-point the car into (what seems like) the guard rail of the brigde. Of course once you are over the rise you are no longer pointing at the guard rail, but getting the brain to comprehend that is easier said than done... similar to the fip flop, im carrying heaps of speed and its a real 'trust' thing accelerating into something you can't see. Hard to describe in words.... i guess thats why its a young mans sport, you have less 'fight or flight' responses to override (i.e. young and dumb is sometime advantageous on the track :chuckle: )
Good stuff chop, it's all good experience hey. OP is probably my favourite track, despite the fact the walls are on the track nearly all the way round. I think (for that reason) a lot of people are put off and shy away from there.

I was in St Helens Park for most of the morning and just after lunch ~1:30 I thought I would come by and say
So it was like 2pm as I got to the gate.... At the gate was satnding this little blonde lass... and the conversation went something like this.
She said:- That will be $15 :eyes:
I said:- It's like less than 2hrs before the day is done and I just want to say hi to one of the competitors...
She said:- Yep, that'll be $15 thanks.
I said:- You are joking aren't you?
She said:- Nope....
I said:- No way lady
... and just turned around and precedded to come home.
Hope you all had fun guy's maybe next time I should be a little more prepared and a little more organised, rather than just turning up. :slap:

Light goes green and they start to drive off and it hits me, that's Choppo, was going to call out something immature but

Exactly right chop.......it is a track that you need to brave in a few spots.......in the gem when you get it right the dog leg is flat in 4th.....and its a bit scary when it crosses up......:yike:
That corner off the brodge is a bitch to get right.....but it is satisfying when you do....like you say it is a blind apex.
There is a bump on the inside up against the ripple strip.....that is what i use as my apex...if you get the bump it naturally pushes the car towards the outside strip and instead of fighting the car through the corner you can just let it "slide" so to speak out to the exit apex.
The car looks great on the track mate!

So what was the go with old mate? Playing silly buggers or mechanical problems?
Baulked by someone who didn't appear to know if he wanted to go or stop ... frustrating!!!
At least your off was impressive (& probably expensive?) 4 flat spotted tyres?
Chop, i came off there in almost exactly the same way, luckily on the infield like you.

Unfortunately it still ends up my fault. As it was last lap, second last corner i got on the loud pedal too hard trying to get up the inside for the straight. A lap or two before i would have just gone with the flow. The 'flip flop' is a big over the rise corner usually very fast... i ended up coming over there un-loaded and put the boot in...if you listen to the sound carefully, im not sure if i should keep 4th or grab 3rd..... there is a 'what gear should i grab silence' Grabbed 3rd which did the job :)
Its one of those situations that when you were going it at the time, it was the best option... replaying it 99 times it wasn't LOL! Hindsight is a great thing

No i think it was a genuine engine problem. BUT of all the places on all the tracks :flame: It cant be helped though.
Zero damage fortunately (i think).
Had Dan hitting it with the hose for more than an hour, but still have weeds hanging out of the brakes!

Thanks for the video choppo
Got out of that one pretty well other than the fact of not finishing which sux.
I watched the vid a number of times out of interest what happened. I could only imagine how many times you did.
My guess, the bloke in front tyres going off, then over the bit before you went woops he missed a gear or had engine spark problem and was going to let you through. Likely to be wrong but either way bad luck. If so it would of been a pretty mad outside overtake manavure.
Hope next rounds bring some more luck.

Very close..... the race before, he had a hit with another guy and the headlight was busted.. that was allowing water in somehwere important and there was a spark problem. So it just died on him.
I watched it a thousand times :lmao: and in hind sight, he was actually trying to let me through on the inside where i went.... when its all happening real time and for the first time, you dont get the benefit of thinking so much about it.
As i said, it was actaully my fault as i spun it BUT it was a very unfortunate set of circumstances that i would have preferred not occur.
Worst of all, that was the point scoring race - so i go from second on the ladder to no-where :swear:
A win next round and you will be on top Chop.

WOW they are good pics - not the subject - just great pics. PLEEESSSE come out on Sunday, at least for the Championship race (last race around 3.30 -4pm i rekon, you will see some real close action.
For Dunc and Eric, thats obviously out of T2... we started the day with the OP set up which i thought was way too soft. Felt like i was driving a boat. So in brain rush, i decided to stiffen up the car with a '2 click' on all 4 corners.
Well wasnt that a crap idea. Had me coming around every corner like the photos show. Slow, fast didn't make a difference. Like that everywhere. And guess what..... fell from a '49 to a '51 :yike:
Last session, softened it up more than i started the day with (the settings i thought were soft and crap) and wow what a difference! Felt like a boat, but it was quick! Only lasted 2 laps and spun a belt. Try T1 at 180-ish without power steering :yike: Thanks to Dave's diagnosis, got a new tensioner coming in the morning.
Planning on new tyres tomorrow morn too, so cross fingers qual will be good.
BTW thanks to Dan and Dave and all the others who turned out. BBQ snags tomorrow and Sun if anyone is interested.

Crownies it is mate - better than that Tooheys New crap you suggested today !
Congrats and well done Chop - although pulling that sh!t on the last lap of qualifying is NOT cool you bastard... :headbang:
We lost 3rd gear whilst actually leading the race, so Harmo was blowing up deluxe on the radio... :lmao:
When i left the workshop (out for dinner with the missus was the plan, otherwise my balls would be missing) we had the 'box out and Harmo, Joseph and Cam had just turned up with it's replacement. Hope we manage to get a good run tomorrow, looks like the off season will be spent saving for a Hollinger !
BTW - How are Ahmed's undies ? That was a pretty decent sized off at Turn One !

Yeah, it takes a couple views to work out whats going on...
Fortunately mine is pretty good. Only drivers guard, just clipped the bonnet, cracked headlight. Still drove straight though!!!! Finished the race and overtook half dozen cars or so.... remarkable actually!
His... well... it's faaaaarked. Bent as a bananna.
Aparrently that was me having a 'brain snap and T-boning him on T2'... more like he got the shits i was overtaking and decided to close the door on me - doing a massive left hand swerve into my side front. As i dont have any front damage, not sure how it categories for a T-bone. :weirdo: Just when he did that to a 1700kg Crommie, he didn't realise it would hurt more than he hurt it
Of-course its still my fault, it just no-one has seen the video (except you) :D Happy to keep the reputation actually, as im sick of people balking, swerving, hitting me and 'closing the door on me' knowing i back off all the time..... well i dont anymore. Well ... I admit that I don't know much about much but ... if an RX-7 has a B pillar, that looked like AT LEAST the A pillar.
Not even going into how that goes remotely close to a "T-Bone" ... isn't there some rule stating that passing must be allowed if the overtaking car is level/passed the B pillar?
Maybe one Commodore past was Ok but two wasn't?
From an observer's point of view ... looks like the "door" was slammed shut pretty bloody firmly ... RX-7 style.

Gotta say I'm with you on this one ...
He was out wide being passed, he had to know that someone would be right on the tail of the white VX ... watch moves like that it V8SC, it's pretty rare that only one car gets under the guy being passed. Once you leave yourself out there with the door wide open there's ALWAYS a few cars ready to sneak through ... especially on the 2nd corner.
Anyway ... what would I know. Good to hear the car isn't too bad.

Funny Dave, my thoughts too....
Appratently the A/B pillar thing is only a V8SC rule...... in anycase, i measured the centreline of his rear wheel mark on the side of my car and i was 2.1m down the side from his rear wheel. So add the rear end of his car to that dimension (another 1m say), and yeh.... i was somewhat more than past the A or B or any other pillar for that matter :dunno:.

The commode ran wide into a set of esses and left a huge gap. Chris ran his car up the inside of the commodore and was actually past it when the commode tried to shut the door, they made big contact mainly to Chris's sprinter. The commodore bloke cryed foul at the end of the race but In my eyes if they leave the door open, your fair game and have to give racing room

Actually i pride myself on NEVER having hit anyone. NOT even a tap. And geezz ive had some close side by side action.... this brings its own problems though. You are seen as a soft touch and the good guys start taking advantage of it - balking you/ tap-bash/ closing the door/ swerving near you etc etc etc.... it all makes you back off and let them through. Unfortunately ive just had to get more assertive if i want to win.
Having said this, some guys DONT do the above, so you can still race without touching (which is waaaayyyy better fun), but you have to work out who fits into which category and race them as they do you. If you can't beat em join em.

Yeah, not to destroy the story (let Ahmed have his day in the sun), but for the others Ryan Brown is in an RX7 and is 2-3sec quicker per lap than everyone!!!!! Unfortunately an electrical problem kept him out of R3.... also Harmo was out with gearbox/ diff failure (this is Bop's RX7 driving love child)...
BUT
Thats why standard T56 gearboxes, KAZZ diffs and late model wiring might become an advantage one day - like last Sunday

Just looked at the pic. Looks like a wheel did most of the damage. Steve, I would be getting a look inside those doors for an intrusion bar. Doesnt look like there are any in there. I thought only Jap spec RX7 doors dont have intrusion, all Aussie ones must have them.:sway:
Chop. When you were the pussy you needed a medal for the amount of damage you have copped on your rear bar and putting up with it. That red rear bar has had more different colours on it than a technicolour dream coat. Tough guy chop gets a medal for handing some back.
Told you it would work Chop. One hard punt and they wont treat you like a girl anymore. They will all know next time when your coming through. I said the same to Ahmed. I watched at Oran as the gatorz car went to the outside of Ahmed hard under brakes and did a big left swerve to unsettle Ahmeds nerves into turn 2. Ahmed went onto the inside grass, car was all unsettled and the RX7 drove right around him. It an old racers trick on the new boys. Happens in ute racing all the time. When you dont move they usually spin off. Just means you need a lot of head light and front guards.
As speed goes that RX7 of browns is a machine. Nothing is going to catch that in a hurry. The gatorz car is quick also but if the fat assed commodore can get it off the line it is harder for it to get past. Brown has the HP to drive around anyone.
Must say though I am still smiling at it.

Doesn't say anywhere in the rule book that says 3J cars must retain intrusion bars Darren ? I guess that's why the RX-7 guys who read the rule book all run Jap import doors. But shhh, it's a secret... :)
I've seen the in-car of Harmo's pass on Ahmed at OP, he outbraked him, as simple as that. A lighter, more nimble car always will. What was funny was Ahmed changing direction 3 times the lap before trying to stop a pass being made. Just remember, most run cameras thesedays, they make damning evidence in stewards hearings...
Browny, Harmo (Gatorz car) and Bretto have had the measure of the Commos all year. But at the rate Ahmed and Chop are going they are closing the gap every meeting. Can't wait to see how fast they are when they've had a bit more time in the seat and played with set-up. The RX-7 domination in Victoria is just about over, i think NSW might see the same...

I didnt say he didnt out brake him but surely you also saw the swere when they were side by side. Its no foul it was smart tactics by the Gatorz car. I just told the boys dont be baulked as they are in 1700kg cars vs 1300kg cars.
I need to get a copy of that rule book. It ws definately in issue in prod sports, but I will check, not that an intrusion bar would have helped footie.
It will be a long way off before the coms catch the RX7's and cost a lot more too, until then I am sure choppo will weed them out. Rumour is he is working on 2 per meeting :chuckle: something about rubbins racing he just rubs harder than the others:hide:

Harmo looked like he moved across there but i guarantee you he would have thought there was enough room - he's one of the cleaner guys out there. Remember not so long ago you were blowing wind up his arse after Wakefield saying how clean he was, and how he gave you racing room, but now you are threatening to punt the same bloke ?
Oh yeah - and i seem to remember you pulling an identical move on Harmo (yep, the same Gatorz RX-7) at Wakefield after he came from rear of grid to defend your position on the last lap - or do you just have a short memory ?
Don't get too cute mate. You've raced nice and clean until now. Don't let the fact that Footie let you get away with it fool you into thinking everyone will take shit. I can think of half a dozen guys that would punt you into the middle of next week if you start trying to get all puffy-chested. And Footie is one of them. Be real careful next time he starts filling your mirrors...

Do you only read selectively Nick ?
The bit about keeping the foot buried to the floor is what disturbed me a little mate. Now that i have read it again it was probably a bit tongue in cheek but the RX-7 that "crowded" Chop belongs to my team mate so yeah, perhaps i have a "vested interest". But Chop did exactly the same thing to him at Wakefield - yet Pete didn't start telling everyone how he'd just drive into him next time...
I know Chop is a decent fella - we get on great. Don't think i'm having a shot at him. But he's been racing I.P for a short time and is still learning what the other drivers are like - and yes, if you happen to rub the wrong guys they will give it back with interest...
The vast majority are great blokes and race clean - and yep, Steve is one of them. But he is in the process of learning who is who and how they race. I've been around and / or raced with most of these guys for 7 or 8 years. I just don't want to see him get punted because he gave someone attitude who perhaps didn't deserve it...
Enough from me, don't want to upset the fanboys. I'm sure Chop will take my post in the spirit intended...
I watched the video (on youtube) of the incident and to be blunt it just doesnt look like the guy seen you Chop. I think it was a combination of him being (perhaps) too wide on T2 approach (as a direct result of giving the other car [what seem likes excessive ] room i guess) and then having to quickly cut back, perhaps without seeing the rapidly aproaching big red car! Tough call, but wtf would i know about IPRA (sweet f.a. for sure). I hope all parties get fixed quickish and back out ok for next round.

Pretty fair assessment Dunc.
I figure the RX-7 got on the brakes waaaaaaay too early (remember it's the first lap from a standing start so he's not carrying as much speed as a normal lap - might have fooled him ?) - Ahmed ducked up the inside and he's turned in not expecting Chop to be up there as well...
Chop might have struggled to hug the corner but it's a 50/50 thing at worst. I'm finding it hard to blame either driver really. I'd like to see Chop post it on the I.P forum and give some people a new perspective actually...
Ooops, i said i wasn't going to say anymore... :D

Not really mate ... I understand your perspective, the things that get me are;
- this guy banging on about Chop having a "brain snap at T2"
- the aggressive nature of these blokes towards anyone new ... probably just motorsport, but it'd turn a hell of a lot of people away
- the comment that there are half a dozen blokes waiting to punt Chop off the track ... for his supposed "brain snap" and "attitude" afterwards I guess ?
I'm sure they're good blokes mate, and I don't mean to offend you ... but none of this paints a good picture for anyone looking to get into something like this.
The experienced guys seem to have created a boys club of sorts, if your new you get pushed off the track / swerved at etc. If you don't want your car bent (who would ... especially when new to it) you end up off the track. I'd expect that sort of shit to end with a black flag ... but I guess it's fine ??? Then if you decide to take an aggressive approach into a race to try and even it all up ... you have half a dozen blokes waiting to punt you off the track at the first given opportunity ? None of this looks "clean" to me.
Maybe I'm just a soft cock and need to stay out of it ...

Guys without seeing the video........it seems to me as a "RACING INCIDENT".
I have seen the stuff on the other forum........i have seen the stuff here.......
It is an old myth that the red haze comes down at race start....but it is very true.......Unfortunately on a race track things do happen......sometimes avoidable but even those ones can still turn nasty and sonmeone (x2 in this case) ends up off the circuit or with a bent car.
It happens in every form of motorsport right down to supersprints........
I have been around race tracks my whole life.......i have been taught by a few people that are very well respected in Australian motorsport and i have enough experience al though only young to know that this shit can and will happen to anyone in motorsport at some stage........
Like fatboy said.........50/50 call.......both parties probably had some fault but in the end it is deemed a racing incident for a reason.......which means there should be no need for all the shit that everyone is going through!
Just my opinion of the matter.....
Sorry if i stepped on anyones toes.....:hide:

Actually that pretty much sums it up for me. I suppose i just wasn't ready (i was a softcock too  ) for what its really like at the pointy end. But im getting use to it.
But thats life, just got to get with the program, rather than trying to change the program to suit me. (Except the weight thing John and Bop   - change is a good thing ;) )
Bop - don't worry everyone, he knows where im coming from - i know where he's coming from. Similarly, Harmo is generally a fair driver, (and a bloody good driver) and we have had side by side rac'n without touching - the way it should be and that wont change. Ive a lot of respect for Harmo actually because he doesn't take the mid corner opportunity to 'tap' you off.
Its the old story, those who play fair with you, give you racing room, you give it back - same as the T1 i put up.... just taking the piss with Bop..... but i backed off to give him some space, hope Harmo returns the favour one day.
RE: putting it up on IPRA - nah, getting a bit over it there - woudn't want to dirty the IPRA image and have guys jump all over me. Plus i only just realised last weekend, the guys who run the series earn their living maintaining that car, so its a definite no win situation posting anything up.
The great thing about TC is i can dis-agree with you and you/anyone can dis-agree with me without being censored nor getting into a (serious) blue.
Just as important i can call a 'spade a spade' over here. IPRA (NSW) aint the gentle ammature racing series i thought it was at the pointy end), where people don't race for sheep stations, everyone is best buddies etc. Far from it, at least ppl get a real snap shot of it here which i think is healthy.
Bluegem/Bop - yes it was a 50/50 call ;) The point is back to what Nick stated.
Bluegem - Dont worry, no toes stepped on - im the dumb ass to stick my neck out and post this stuff on a public forum, so i certainly wont be offended to get it chopp-ed off (excuse the pun).
All good and im glad its an interesting read - which is the the point of the 'Travelling Roadshow' thread :yep:

Chop,
It sounds like to me you guys need to nut out a few things at the club meetings. We had a similar problem for a few years here in SA where there was some bad blood between some competitors and our committee got the said parties together and they aired their greivences and now all is good.
Now our club has never been stronger, we have BBQ at every meeting and the atmosphere is a lot more friendly but still very competitive. We have actually modelled our club on the vic club, those guys when ever we race there are absolutley fantastic and make you feel welcome with a BBQ, stubby holders etc. Our top guys are probably within 1 sec between 5 cars here in SA and there is hardly ever any panel damage.
FFS we are racing for fcukall and any damage we cop we have to pay for
When we had the Nats here in 2004 I think our committee did a lot to mend some bridges with the NSW competitors, there was a incident at Oran Park between a few cars that caused a bit of trouble. Tony Wallis who is a very clean and fair driver and ALWAYS gives racing room said he had a ordinary time at NSW last year in regards to hospitality and driving standards
We are planning on taking our 4 cars over to EC next year but we arent sure now we want to, last thing we want to do is go back with 4 fucked car back to Adelaide.
I must admit though, Boppa, Harmo and Flem have always been good guys and I plan on catching up with them at the Nats as long as Harmo makes the trip( C'mon Harmo its the Nats at the Island who give toss were you place)
Afterall all we want at the end of the day is to have some good racing, talk some shit and put the car on the trailer the way it came off the trailer at the start of the weekend
Chop you should come over to Lala for a state round, you will get some good racing a stubbie holder and a BBQ

Yeah thats nothing like here.... actually the U2L guys have a great little group going - sounds similar to your S.A. set up and to be honest, they are the guys i hang out with at the track.
Ive actaully raised exactly what you said with IPRANSW, but to no avail. Too many people in positions of power that their lively-hoods depend on 'their' cars winning. We certainly should have more independant Committees and Officials as a start. Ive maintained, doing it the current way simply ends up in more incidents like last years Nats.
Notice Tony's comments on Priv Sect IPRA.... couldn't agree more with him actually, only being 'new' to it all myself. Except Bop, he gives me a BIIIGGGGGG hug everytime i see him - either that or a carton of Crownies :lmao:

At the expense of also being labelled a sheep & fanboy ... this was also my gut feeling about the whole situation. Not that anyone gives 2 farks what I think and not being part of it I prob shouldn't have any opinion whatsoever about it but ... where's the fun in that? :D
Hopefully it's not the case but it happens often in MANY arenas of life. Sport, workplaces, forums (not the best example) so why should motorsport be any different?
New guys (unknown quantities) are presumed to know nothing, have zero ability, can't be competitive/quick or challenge the establishment etc. But Chop and Ahmed have shaken the status quo in their first season of racing. WE CAN'T HAVE THIS!!!
Might be the case ... might not but it wouldn't be the first time this sort of problem's happened in a sporting field. Not taking the piss out of anyone in saying what I've said but it'd be reasonable to think it could be the case given some of the blurt that's going on.
Aaaaaaaaaanway ... taking my $2.47 opinion and shoving it back up my arse where it belongs, THAT'LL DO DONKEY! It'd have to be labelled a racing incident because the RX-7 driver will state that Chop T-Boned him and Chop will state the RX-7 turned down on him. Who's right?

Browny is leading by that much he probably won't need to do the last round.
Only thing in the way is it's our last time at Oran so Ryan might decide to run anyway...
Of course next year you'll be back where you belong behind Ryan, Harmo, Bretto, Wattsy etc... :hifinger:

Probably mate. He's decided to go to LA at short notice and wouldn't have been able to do every round so has pulled the pin now. Gives us plenty of time after EC to fix the gearbox he broke on Saturday and the spool he broke on Sunday i guess... :o
Car still needs some serious sorting. The rear end and shock settings need some fine tuning. We wouldn't have caught Ryan this year anyway (little bugger is too quick !) but it would be nice to get within a second or two !

OK, here we go again, Crusty the Clown (me) and his trusty Side Show Bob (Dan) are heading South for the weekend of IPRA action (plus Friday practice). WP is the venue and its surely gonna be action packed. Split grids with 40+ entries over both U2Ltr and O2Ltr. New cars including an ex GTP Crommie being driven by V8 Utes driver Warren Millett (one of the back fielders in V8Utes) will surely be up there along with an old head in John McKenzie in his VZ. The tip will be Warren, John, Ahmed, me all up front mixing with the Mazdas so it should be interesting. Three quick RX7's and FOUR quick Crommies in the front pack..... First time the Holdens have out-numbered the Mazdas in the 'front pack' for ages :nilly:
For entertainment, ive got a big red and white target painted on the side, front and rear of my car :swords: (more than usual) so it should be an interesting weekend for me anyway.
As always, anyone in the area is more than welcome!
hell yes!!! cant wait for this weekend. I has a shitty start to the week so this will be ana awesome end to it!

Its north of Sydney. Yes it is still owned by the ex boss of coke
Well round 5 of the travelling roadshow has just passed and what a round it was!
To say it was eventful would be a bit of an understatement for this weekend.
Friday Chop and I arrived to get things sorted for the practice. Everything went well and we got the pressures dialed in using the data from last round. Only minor adjustments needed to be made, proving how important writing stuff down can be lol
Saturday was qualifying and race one. Qualifying saw series leader Ryan Brown take pole with a 1.07.7245, joining him on the front row was our team mate Ahmed Baghdadi who was .6916 seconds slower. Choppo managed to get onto row 3 with 1.09.0299.
There was two new commodores in the field this round, Warren Millets Wake Up VY (i think) and John McKenzie's carbied VY. This means that the mighty Holdens now outnumber the RX7's.
After taking an early lead in the race Ahmed had some break trouble which saw him have a lose going into the hairpin. On lap 9 he blew a diff and was unable to continue, to make matters worse the thermo fan relay stopped working meaning once he stopped going forward the temp skyrocketed and made a big mess under bonnet. In the end race one was won by Brett Morse in an RX7 ahead of Ryan Brown. Brown had been having car issues and also had a small off giving the lead to Morse. Newcomer McKenzie got 3rd and Choppo got into 4th position meaning it was an RX7 front row and commodore 2nd row for race 3.
With some assistance from the guys in the Combined Touring class Ahmed got himself another diff and two of the boys worked in the Wakefield dirt all afternoon to get the car ready for race 2 on Sunday.
Sunday saw some detective work to see why the thermo fans weren't coming on, luckily it was a dodgy relay so an easy fix.
Race 2 saw Ahmed start from rear of grid due to his DNF. After an amazing drive he went from last to 4th and set the fastest lap of the race. The race was won by Brett Moorse in his RX7 with McKenzie in second and Steve in 3rd. Ryan Browns car troubles reared their head again which put him back to 7th position. The last lap of race 2 also saw Choppo do a clutch meaning he was having trouble selecting gears.
We thought Choppos weekend was over as a clutch isnt something you carry round spare unless your in the supercars. After trying some things out it was decided he could start in pit lane if we pushed him to help get him going. This was untill Ahmeds seemingly magic touch. He got in the car and playing round with the pedals and worked out a way to start and launch the car meaning Chop could start from row 2 of the grid alongside Ahmed.
Race 3 was uneventful for the Sams Performance/ Royal purple/ Nitrox Group team with Ahmed finishing 3rd, ahead of Steve who finished 4th. Morse was 1st and untouchable in his RX7 and McKenzie was 2nd.
The racing over the weekend was amazing. It was very close and very clean with the only touch occurring when Choppo gave Ahmed a big of a love tap to get him to hurry up. They boys did exceptionally well, especially Steve who was on old tyres that had seen the drag day!
The final round is Round 6 which is on the 31st of October to the 1st of November at Sydney's Oran Park Raceway. It will be a good weekend of racing as all of the gremlins should be sorted out in both cars

What are you doing with the old donk? I'm working on getting an LS1 into the old VK at the moment. We looked at going carby but went injection. Maybe I should reconsider?
NO!! Keep the injection on the LSx engine - make sure you buy the engine with the Delphi computer. Plenty of tuners around that will make em work better than you could possibly believe - bugger the carby.
We have been running conservative 6Ltr engines for a year because it out rates the old highly strung Group C/A race engines on race fuel.
BUT John came out last weekend and hosed me on hp  So now it is time to 'up the ante'.
BTW, in a light weight VK you can get away with WAY less hp than a late model, so grab a semi standard LSx engine and go for it. My 'old donk' is still a $25k engine, so you dont want to go there LOL
Brickie
16-09-2009, 10:07 PM
Yeah the weight advantage was a big attraction. I figured a 400 to 450 hp LS1 VK would be reliable as the sun and quick enough to have some fun! Anyway still got a long way to go. The engine is still on the stand weighting to be pulled down.

This is going ot be a big round too... the old story, last State Round ever at OP etc etc has all the fields from Sports Sedans to us IPRA guys bloody full!
Cant even get a carport, so im off to some camping shop next week to buy a shade structure or two whilst we are camped out down near the swamp...
At last count, the O2L field is 28 strong with a massive 16 of these being the 'old RX7's, 3's and 2's. Its a bloody Rotary minefield :bash:
Believe it or not, OP ain't my favourite track, so if it wasn't for the fact that we are losing one of only 2 Sydney tracks, i would really mind. :yike:
As Dan said, ALL ARE WELCOME - bring a hat and sunshade though, i have a feeling its gonna be reeeeal HOT. Im sure the racing will be worth it though!

Cheers for the support - i think ill need it LOL
He is a top bloke and usually has some decent food platters as he owns a catering business, tell him Oran park isn't part of the international skarsgard cup.

Does it come with instructions? Im sure if you and your Gorrilla mates can do it, Dan and i will be alright :nana:
Didn't see this until now. Smartarse... :chuckle:
For all the other guys thinking of going out to Oran Park next weekend - don't think, do it ! It's the last ever State Round to be held at OP, so a little bit of history i guess. National Sports Sedans are on the programme too, they are always good to watch and bloody fast !
Get out there and cheer on Chop & Ahmed, and take lots of photos - they'll be great to look back on in years to come....

Hehehhe... PM sent. Yep come on down, and yep bring that tent.
The set up is now;
My car, Ahmeds car, 2 x RX7's (one of which is a Top 3 car Bretto), and another VS Crommie. If your hanging with us, at least there will be plenty to see and a variety of cars, plenty of shade.
Thanks to Bop, Matt, Dan and a few others, we will have 6 tents to set this all up in!
Tip for everyone, bring a fold up chair, an esky with ice and your selection of drinks, a camera and a hat!
I'll add Non alcoholic drinks. You can't have them in the paddock area

You can enjoy a cold beer AFTER all racing for the day has finished guys. I don't say that to be a prick, but the driver can be ejected from the meeting if any perceived "friends" are drinking alcohol in the pit area during the day...
I know this because some dude i barely know wandered into my garage at Eastern Creek with a can of bourbon to say hello. What a shitfight !
Oh and Dan, can you look after my Ezi-Up please mate ? Maybe guide Choppo into the parking spot etc ? Because you know what he's like when it comes to hitting things...
LOL will do mate!
OK guys! This is your final notice. We are on from tomorrow. Im taking a break from making lunch kits to post here lol. If your coming down tomorrow just rock up. Ill be there about 9am. If your coming on Sat or Sun PLEASE let me know asap by SMS to 0422074079 so i can organise tickets.

Thanks! Usually around 3 or so but as its the last round there is some BBQ thing going on.
Its the last state round at OP but not the last round ever. We are back there with Irace on the 13th, 14th and 15th.
Sorry guys I can't make it Friday but good luck over the weekend ;)
Cheers Daz. like i said, theres always next year lol
Today saw qualifying and race one.
There was a large number of people that magicly appeared out of the woodwork so they could race at Oran one last time. This unfortuantely meant that lots of RX7's made there way to the front of the grid. To give you an idea out of the top 12 qualifiers only 4 were in contention for the championship.
Chop managed a respectable 12th and Ahmed managed 16th after getting a flat on the warm up lap.
Race 1 was eventful to say the least. 5 cars, including Chop and Ahmed started from pit lane because down the back there is no PA system and we cant hear the call for the race!
Choppo drove the wheels off the car to move up 8 places in 6 laps so will be starting from 22nd. Unfortunately there was an "incident" so Ahmed got a DNF and will have to start from rear of grid.
Anyway here are some pics from today lovingly taken by Greg from Car Care Products

Look at that shit!!! Damn, it's been a while since I've been to the Park.
Such a sad pic ... check out the bloody housing in the background. :sigh:
Yet another raceway goes the way of the dodo ... all due to bloody housing.
Good effort in the face of a rotor-vasion Chop. Very spiftastic on the muffs to Dan.
