Thanks, I chucked the kids in the bath this afternoon while Nick chucked the carseats in the GTS! ( he actually didnt chuck them, he was very careful)
Dressed the kids then we all jumped in the car for a drive , I had a go, SOOOOOOOOO GOOOOOD!

Hey Febs,
Well worth the wait ... in case it's not obvious, I really am blown away by how good this car feels. Soaks up the bumps (despite the 20 inch wheels), no noises, can't feel the gear changes (gearbox is brilliant), everything is solid.
The doors close with a real thud, I love the lower seating position compared to older models. The bottom of the window is up around your shoulder when the seat is all the way down, feels very secure. I should also mention that despite all the complaining about the A pillar thickness ... I didn't even notice it !!!
Brakes ... not really sure, feel great in normal use but the car had only done 15kms when I picked it up so I haven't been standing on them hard yet.

I'm told that getting all of that to work so well was the reason it took so long ... problems with wiring supplies and parts supplies for the roof ???
Whatever it was ... I'm glad I waited and didn't go for an aftermarket job, this factory effort is fantastic.

The car looks great - you lucky/wise bugger.
Quick question the small lamp below the driving light - whats that for? seen plenty just never knew.
Presume you saw the thread elsewhere about the fit of the front spoiler. Maybe worth measuring the gaps to see if it changes.
One more - the rear quarter panel around the tail light steel or plastic like the bumper?

Hey Phil,
Thanks mate ...
The light on the front, I believe it's supposed to be a fog light ... I'll have to check the book. The big light comes on with the high beam and you have to pull the light switch out to turn the little one on.
The front spoiler ... I believe this has only been an issue on the Senator ... haven't seen any GTS' or R8s with the problem.
Rear quarter ... good question ... I have no idea. I'll have a closer look and let you know.
One other interesting thing ... all HSVs come with a full size spare alloy. I reckon if HSV can fit a 20 inch alloy wheel in the boot as a spare there is no reason any car should come with the stupid space saver rubbish.

14-12-2006, 11:38 AM
Thanks Nick
No biggie about the light - right spot for fog, nice and low.
Front spoiler, just being cautious.
Rear quarter. I see potential for blokes to change the whole rear panel just to get the HSV tail lights onto a lower spec car, like is done with front spoilers, monaro bonnet etc. Probably easier and cheaper for the handyman if its plastic.
Phil

Won't be easy Phil ... HSV has actually removed metal and mounted the tail lights lower than the Holden lights. So it won't actually be possible to install HSV lights unless you remove metal from the rear quarter panel or get and HSV rear quarter panel ... not sure that would be possible.
I gather part of the reason HSV did this was to make it almost impossible for the HSV tail light treatment to be bolted onto any Commodore ... IMO a great move.
I cant remember, it was either 2 or 20 million that HSV spend on the rear tail lights to get them loking like that in the VE chassis.
Troy :)

If you use the lip on the boot under the number plate as a comparison you can see how much lower the HSV lights are.
I was incorrect saying the rear quarters where different ... but you would need an entire rear HSV bumper to make it work, and I doubt that would be possible.
Having said that it is probably only a matter of time till some knocks up a bodgy aftermarket copy to make it work.

I reckon it looks like one complete panel from the rear edge (lower) of the wheel arch, around the tail light, across under the bootlid etc.
So some one with too much time and money will try it.

http://www.oz8.org/gallery/albums/NickS/RIMG0025.jpg
http://www.oz8.org/gallery/albums/NickS/RIMG0033.jpg
As with the SS-V it rides better than it did stock. Getting a few scrapes from the exhaust on car park speed bumps etc. so I'm changing it from a dual 3" to a dual 2.5". I reckon the suspension ranks ahead of the exhaust size.
The car has now done over 27,000kms faultless kms, I still think it's far and away the best car we have ever owned. It does everything with ease, comfort, safety and looks fantastic at the same time. The kids love the DVD player and we have racked up family holidays to Orange, Bathurst, Port Macquarie, Blue Mountains and Coffs Harbour. The new hinges on the boot are one of the best changes they made with the car ... you can fit so much stuff in the back, it's quite amazing.
Such a sensational tourer and good enough for a 1:15 around Wakefield (with my average steering) on street tyres and an automatic gearbox. I have my track tyres on some E Series R8 rims now so I'm pretty keen to get back down to Wakey and see if I can improve a bit.
:D

Looks good a bit lower - Pedders again?
Yeah mate ... I was more than happy with the result with the SS-V so I figured "why change".
The height will drop a bit further as everything settles but not much. I wanted to try and cure the altitude sickness without loosing the front spoiler on every driveway and the exhaust on every bump in the road ... so far so good.
Tim ... I'll let you know re; the exhaust. It will only be the cat back but I'm not sure exactly what's happening with this one yet. It has a fault (being from the 1st batch released by DF in Dec 2006) and I'm not sure if it's just being swapped for a 2.5" or if it will be replaced under warranty and I'll buy the 2.5" and have this to sell ...

Dunlop SP Supersport ... it's the only semi-slick type tyre that I could find in 19".

Thanks Nick, so it's still the same option for 19's, was hopping they would have made RE55's by now!
What are the rough cost for these?

I honestly can't remember mate ... I have the invoice at work somewhere, I'll look it up.
I got these tyres for the Coupe 4 about 2 years ago, I have since switched them over the E Series R8 rims as both the Coupe and the E Series HSV's run 245 fronts and 275 rears. So it's been a while ...
From memory $300 - $400 per tyre ... I'll check it next week.

Nah no need, only wanted a rough guide, i knew you had used them before and you prefered the RE55's, but the size was always going to be a problem.
I want some for future track days so will start looking soon.
