View Full Version : IRACE Series

As alot of you guys know the little gemini gets used for hillclimbs and supersprints.........
However being the year that OP closes and being that the gemini is a dedicated race car i think its time it gets a real work out........
So a month ago or so i got put onto this IRACE thing by a customer......
It is a non CAMS event that is full circuit racing......so i did some investigating and thought i might give it ago.
The car will be running in "muscle division".
A combo of brute utes, sports sedans,HQ's and IPRA cars and i think a few others.......
So the car is going through a few little mods to get ready.......
I have never wanted to go through all the CAMS bullshit to race and this series has none of that.......
Check it out if you are interested......www.i-race.net.au.
I will keep you posted on the few little mods and what happens when we start!
^^Link does not work, I think this is the correct one:

Does the car have to be a log booked race car? Or just like the super sprints. Looks like Ls2 wont cut the mustard either with full medical required. But it is a great way of getting into door to door racing interested as well.
ShylanMotorsport
22-07-2009, 09:19 PM
All you need to do is a OLT.......its easy.....and Garry Willmington will do it at a track day......
the car needs to be log booked but not CAMS book.....just fill the form out and send 3 photos......its so easy!!!!

It gets coverage on speedweek and fox sports too. I ahve seen it a few times. Mainly the older supercars are shown but I may have missed the other races too.
Looks like a good set up.

I first saw it on Fox sport as well, it was a pretty good coverage that was like a infomersial selling the new format on how to enter and what their goals were.

The rules are relaxed and so are the driving standards Ive heard. A few IP guys had a run and were less than impressed by the average driving, plenty of panel damage is the order of the day. A guy in a brute was the main culprit, hopefully he isnt allowed to run anymore

HAHA i dont think ill quite be on the pace of a brute ute!
Ill try.....and i know its handicap racing in some of the races but i think he will blast past me!!!

I think there is a MX5 series?
It is pretty cheap to run.......i only wanna do Oran Park this year......We will see about next year......

If anyone wants to have a look at this series there is a round next weekend at op.......main day of racing is saturday........
1st time for there new category the HDT cup.....early model commodores.....it shoud be interesting........not many of them have bothered about suspension......so it should be good to watch!
Im hoping to get out there to check out the competition......with a stop watch in hand,.....

The Charger would be in the Muscle Division too !
This series started a few years ago and had decent entry numbers, but the entries in each class this year have been very small.
The demise of OP might save this series.

No mate neither of these cars have been comped before they have only been out on private track days.I am stepping into the commodore for the first time and i havent run at oran park for about 15 years so practice sections will be interesting. They both are pretty stock cars as such and the VB only runs a 253 so straight line speed will be lacking so i may install a coffee machine and go and make skinny white for the hour it will take to cover the front straight.
i have heard that they will be timing our laps with a calendar.

See you out there saturday!

How did you end up Paul?
What a bloody great weekend we had after 2 good practice sessions the car create bad pinging in qualifiying which i had to carry into race 1.
Race one seen the car lossing power each and every lap and we struggled to hold position but still managed to finish first in class and 4th out right in caterogy not bad for a car that died coming onto the main straight for the last time and rolled across the line with the old girl boiling and what turned out to be 2 blown head gaskets.
1 1/2 hours later heads are off and we are getting kick out as they are locking the gates as it was 6 pm friday night.
7am Saturday morning and we are ringin every spares shop in town to see which answered first to get the gear we need.
Well long story short we made the grid with the 30sec board showing and me still getting dressed for race 2 at 9.45am.
Had a great run and managed to win class and move up in the main field a few spots.
Race 3 was a HDT cup only field and reverse grid which saw us start out of 11
after lap 1 I was 8th and lap 2 I was up to 4th outright on lap 5 as i went under the bridge the gearbox decided that enough was enough and that was the end of my weekend.
i am really happy with how we went as the 1979 commodore stock 253 4 speed put alot of 5L and 5.7L cars to shame and when we went out i was leading my class and 3rd outright.
had a blast great weekend.
cheers paul

It's not 100% no PI, but geeezzz. I reckon its a $10k week/weekend for me. Looking at that im thinking, well fark it, ill spend that doing IRACE and other rounds and get better value for money, PLUS get coverage of me going dirt/crashing/ generally being a dick on National TV :smiles: .
Then again, i REEEAALLLY want to do PI.

Irace got another 1/2 hour plug on Speedweek and fox sport speed week. Shame they did not show any dam racing which was annoying. Only tiny bits of the races but mostly interviewing the drivers.
Looks like a good series and seems more a relaxed drive and events.

Not sure if the hold-down method of strapping down the rear of the car through the boot will work though  - just jokes.
Yep, sort of all ready. Wheel alignment done - it had 7deg toe IN after my biff with my team mate. No wonder those last few laps it wouldn't go around a corner
Did a quick bodge job on the wheel/tire and will see if it holds pressure.
Get up, pack car and im off and going..... with a 3y.o. that means get up at 5am, fart around for ever and get to the track 10am

Ahhh, you are just outta practice. Nice cool day today. Wait till the 39deg day, waiting on the Marshalling Grid for 1/2 hour fully suited and strapped in LOL. The MG gets the sun straight into the front windscreen too. Then race for 14 laps GP style. THATS when you know its HOT.

I could write a novel just on two days of Motorsport :yep:
Soooo... Friday, free practice, roll out a couple 49's... happy camper indeed. Cut short the final practice even, go home for some great Sat action.
THEN, Saturday.....
Co-driver practice (Ahmed) for 1hr enduro on Sunday arvo was first up in my car, and he was on fire! 50.XX. Beautiful!
Practice, im still a happy camper. Bit slower than Friday but still 50.xx
Qualifying. Massive traffic problems with 25 or so cars on the short circuit. Into the pits for a drive through to clear traffic, then back out again in the same position LOL!!!! Anyway still got a 50.xx in early laps.
THEN,
BAAANNNGGGG... should i say SCREEECCCHHH BANG??? Farken deflated right front (puncture and measured 20psi) AND my ABS playing up (not working light on) sends me into the wall last turn onto the straight. :headbang: Hit RH front wheel-ish/ headlight. The previous great car was now a mess.
Dan got the hammer out, smacked the front guard out and here comes R1 for me. The out lap.... the bloody ABS light is on again - locking a random tyre just trying to warm the tyres up!. Turn the car on/off/on/off 4 times whist trying to do a warm up lap (to reset the ABS). Qual 3rd behind a VK Sports sedan and an orange 200sx with 6cyl skyline turbo (un restricted). BOTH on slicks :headbang:
Great start but get to T1 and the SX went around me on T1 on the outside!!! Shows what slicks can do.
Dan calls over the intercom 'how is it? Is it oversteering or understeering??'.... i reply "both, i cant understand it though, the rear is un-changed!!!!".
A couple laps later i can smell the coolant/boiling water/rust smell at the same time as the rear end almost comes around on me. I drive off onto the grass and kill the engine. Crawl back to the garage and get the bonnet open. Ive got a 3inch spilt in my top radiator hose. It completely blew over the flip flop sending water everywhere.... now that was a fun ride i tell ya :) Its must have been leaking during Qualifying too with a small split as we lost some water - 3L actually
Anyway ,Motorsport is all about "if one day is great, the next you have to watch out. Equally, you have a crap first day, the next is better"
Im hoping anyway :)

Im gonna use tomorrow as a test day now. Got a new set of front springs for the morning (thats another story  ) and a few Combined Touring guys bring down their wheel alignment stuff. The first race will be testing, the second fine tuning and the third - well it should be on song. Just ready for the 1hr Enduro
Talking with the Kumo man, i noticed he had some nice 270 x 18 slicks too :up2sum:

well i just finished doin a couple of hot laps of the long driveway and the neighbourhood........(blew a head gasket and it was missing)......but on the positive.....qualified 14 out of said 25 or so......started next to a EVO 4 and got him of the line......chased a v8 hdt cup car.....who sprayed fuel over me round every left hander....(on the short track = 95%) ( i found out later he did not have a fuel cap).....then i took to the grass to avoid drilling his l/f door on the southern loop when he turned in on me......then when Chop stopped and the yellows were out i got passed under yellows and the car started to miss due to the BHG!!!!!!!
so there was the DNF.........
Yes it was an eventful day to say the least. All crew members have remained sober to ensure that we are there right on time tomorrow ready to fix and change everything.

Well done Matty! Thanks for the help too, it was REALLY appreciated! With only 1 car there we only had 1/2 the tools  . It was 'Matty, have you got a xxxx' 'Matty, can i borrow your air line'.
Sorry mate, but i (we) really appreciate the help. Also, a big  to Matty's Dad - another champion - AND going to give the Private TC day a go
Cheers Matt - anytime you want to give IPRA a go, give me a yell!!!

Well you guys did better then me i went down to winton on saturday for the corvette challenge and blew the commodore up on lap 2 which ended my weekend and obviously any chance of running off the back of the pack on sunday at oran park.
it looks like i may have a engine rebuild to do over the xmas break.

Yep heard the chop mobile twice and saw once. Same with yours. They kept going back to the same cars and ute. Share the cars around I think.
There mus tof been a ute in there mentioned 10 times and got a good 5 minutes of TV time. Contacts I guess
