I thought I better update the your car/my car thing and realised I have never done one.

well heres my track nugget Toyota KE25 Track nugget, the story goes like , I crewed for the nephews with their race cars for about 3 yrs, did a passenger drive day and decided to buld a race car. Found a 3j logged car on the net bought it and rebuilt it from there. Changed drivetrain, front end, brakes gutted all the wiring, reloomed, painted etc.

This is what it looked like when I bought it, the interior, boot and engine bay was resprayed

The engine is out the car and at the engine builders for a big freshen, its never been opened rebuilt so some TLC is needed and some head and comp work for more HP

The specs for the engine will be
new forged rods, forged 12.1 pistons either arias or toda, TRD metal .8mm head gasket, arp head stud kit and main/bigend bolts, acl race series bearings, crank resized, head will be getting a tidy up , adjustable exh cam gear, maybe oversize valves and better springs, 440cc inj up from 295cc and tuned for e85. Hopefully this will net close to 220hp up from 185hp.

The gearbox is also be getting some decent close ratios installed
at the moment ratios are
old ratios
1st-3.587
2nd-2.022
3rd-1.384
4th-1.1
5th-.861

New ratios
1st-2.341
2nd-1.60
3rd-1.195
4th -same
5th- same

The box is getting 3 new gears welded on the mainshaft by albins and CATS will fit the gears, new dogs and synchros etc.
4th and 5th will be staying as the ratios are close and Im not paying 8 grand for a close ratio 1:1 dog box, due to my lack of funds

My engine guy thinks that the box will be worth about 1.5 secs a lap and the extra HP about the same which will equate to a 1.19 round Mallala

Sounds like a nice little weapon mate....
My first car was a KE-25 Corolla, and i will say, it got valve bounced every gear change and never missed a beat until it blew a welsch plug!!!
Then it got rebuilt and hammered even more.. I can only imagine what its like with that in it.....

Pistons and rods ordered ans paid for, went spool rods with weisco forged 11.6 pistons .5mm oversize and got a TRD .5mm metal head gasket off egay. Engine gets disassembled tomorrow and see what the head looks like, I reckon it will be munted. Have a contact for some supertech valves, valve srpings and titanium retainer, head will be sent for a clean up and some porting, the topend should be good for 14mm lift and 12000rpm so it should be safe revving it to 9500rpm. Still working out what cams, looking at some toda 304, 10mm lift bumpsticks

Chop Im hoping 2secs at Mallala with the better ratios, more HP and bigger rubber. Hoping for a fair improvement for PI mainly in driving I was pretty soft :(

I wish I was like declan mate :) he is counting on a 10sec improvement at PI, have you read the thread is hilarious. If he breaks a 1.54 and his old man breaks into the 1.40s I will run down the main straight naked :)

Finally got the motor installed , here's a little vid of first start up, small leak at the timing cover and its loud, just open pipes it sounds very angry:cool: . Its running a bit fluffy as its running much bigger injectors and needs some dyno time to tidy up the tune for E85 but all and all good times

Just need to spend another day or two, cleaning up the wiring, hoses and fit a new airbox and fix the leak. Bleed clutch, brakes, change wheel bearings then its track time and then bathurst :)

I will upload a small vid on the dyno whens it reving to 9500rpm :)

Nearly ready , just waiting for a some induction parts and a new yoke to suit the 20spline output shaft. Not sure how Im going to fit in the airbox, I have fuckall room between No4 trumpet and the clutch m/c. Im thinking a ae92 one with a remote res and doing the same for the brake MC . Im running a mq Patrol 15/16 master .... does anyone know of a more compact one with a 15/16 bore.

Why not individual socks John???

Something like this??
maybe with a aluminium plate behind the trumpet that sits up to the bonnet with a rubber seal to stop heat if thats what you are worried about???
Just a idea.

Bluegem, my engine guy has tested socks, panel filters, and airboxes and reckons socks lose up to 10hp due to the lose of venturi affect around the bellmouths. If you run a 65mm trumpet you need 65mm from trumpet to filter or airbox. I will run the pipercross for tje time being and then upgrade to a decent airbox and smaller trumpets once I relocate the master cylinders.

Paul I will be having a run at Bathurst at Easter. Im hoping to hit the dyno next week and the a a practice day to get my head around the new gearbox. A dozen or so sa guys are making the trek over to race in IP or Reg, so it should be a bit of fun

On the gem we gained 1.8 HP on the dyno by taking socks off and putting gauze over the trumpets.......

Then 3 races in a row at Oran park we dropped a cylinder cause pieces of grass and dirt were getting sucked in and blocking the jets....im prepared to sacrifice 1.8 HP personally.

MattBut did you check the difference without socks or gauze? As has been mentioned by .charged, both do have a big effect on laminer-flow of the air at the trumpet bell, and you'd do better to have a cold-air box with plenty of space between it and the bell-mouth. Also, the shape and extent of the bell-mouth is critical too - a full tubed rim bead is the best

Matt, I was running nothing before and my engine suffered :( but on my datalogging via the ambient temp sensor shows my temps are pretty high. What I will do is fit a asi radiator for a eg civic its about half the size of the one I'm running now and fit a oil cooler alongside, then I will run ducting from the front to the aircleaner. Mid year I will be playing with different length trumpets and try a few airboxes and see what gains or loses we get.

Seldo a mate of mine works at the Tafe as a lecturer and is a 20v nut, he has tried heaps of combos including socks, panel foam filters and finally short trumpets 30mm with a 3.2 litre airbox and picked up 5.3rwkw. His finding were socks gave the worst airflow-venturi effect and the airbox with short trumpets the best with a big foam filter with a 40mm gap between the trumpets in between the best and worst HP readings. The main gain was from 6grand up which is fine by me.

I'm looking at trumpets made by Imec for Toyota N1 racing program, their 30mm long and with a reasonable size airbox and decent ducting HP should be good. I did a bit of research today at the local wreckers and have found that a Mazda Astina clutch master will do the job and is remote reservoir and a Ford Mondeo brake M/C which can be converted to remote reservoir will do the job and is half the size of the monstrosity I'm running now. I just have to redrill the firewall and mount a 10mm aluminum brace plate This will give me a few more valuable inches to play with and save half a kilo over the existing setup and the radiator is about 5 kg lighter also :)

Yes - there you go John. 5.3kw is very handy. Mesh causes too much turbulance when attached to the mouth of the bell.
Funnily enough we've tried all this stuff back to back on the dyno 30 years ago... It's good to know that nothing's changed... ;)
My nephew has a very healthy one of these in a road-going Celica, and thinks he's the first bloke to ever play with them.. His dad and I are having an up-hill battle trying to convince him not to waste his money and spoil a really strong little engine by turbo-ing it. But - he's 20 and knows far more than these silly old farts...

Seldo nothing really changes it just costs more. The 4a are great little engines NA but respond well to FI aswell. My engine guy was hoping I would go FI but I love NA there is nothing better IMHO of a little 1600 revving its tits off at 9000rpm. My mate who has done all the R&D on the 20v is building a very stout turbo 20v for his rare JDM imported Sprinter , it should be hitting the engine dyno next month ..... it will be interesting to see the hp/torque it makes.

NA there is nothing better IMHO

Problem is getting ambient air to them. Ive tried 'the best' socks, 'the best' mesh, 'the best' filters over the trumpets. All failed big time. The effect is as Seldo notes.

The old air box is the only way to go.

P.S. 20y.o. - cant put old heads on youngsters :D

Car was finally dynoed , didnt make the HP we wanted , not sure if it was a slipping clutch(gearbox input shaft seal is leaking) or atmospheric conditions. We will be back to back testing it against the brothers cars figures on the hub dyno we usually use when the clutch is fixed. We are heading to the track next week so will have to see what its like out there. Engine sounds sweet at 9 grand though :)

Only real power run sadly then the clutch was slipping

Its limited to 9000 rpm chop, the dyno day was a pain, the ambient temps were high and the car kept getting hot, then the gearbox started leaking out the input shaft and causing the clutch to slip. Adam set all the load points, sorted the a/f and timing done and the thing revs like a bike with the lighter pistons and rods. At the end of the year we may rip the engine out and spend a couple of days on the engine dyno with different cams, exhaust ,trumpets and airboxes . Its got a really conservative tune in it. The engine guy really wants to turbo the engine but Im not sure I want a extra 150hp and 250ft/lb of torque in a car with a average cage.

Car has finally hit the track, fixed the gearbox leak and changed the diff to a 4.11 for Bathurst next weekend :). The car went well, missed a few shifts on the box due to the closeness of the shifts now, only really used 2,3,4 as the diff was too high. Brake upgrade seems good needs more rear though. The front l/h guard rubs so the guard needs to be trimmed for clearance, car seems to have a heap more sniff in a straightline, I couldnt really judge the upgrade of the wheels and tyres as the tyres were second hand and 4 yrs old, new tyres next week. The car has better turn in but suffered mid corner understeer and was very loose in the rear, also has a bit of a ecu interface fault on the crank angle sensor which limits it to 8500rpm.

the little 4a is definately a fun engine to tinker with.
do you have a complete build blog, would love to know the work done on the engine.

what sort of headers/extractors are you running ?

.charged.
13-04-2010, 09:49 AM
The build log on the engine is pretty boring
The engine runs Toda 12.6.1 forged pistons with a TRD .5 metal H/G for a comp of around 13.2, it runs spool forged rods with arp bolts, stock toyota bearings, stock crank. The head has had a bit of a port mainly on exhaust, it runs 440cc inj for e85 and the extractors are homemade jobies with 2.5 primary into a 3 in 4-1 collector running into a 2 1/2 in hotdog at the rear.

I'm planing on going cams eventually and then go to a 7a block with honda rods and pistons for a total capacity of 1910cc for added torque. Although that may take a while it took 3 years to wear out the rings in the original motor with no filters. They are a great little motor that make impressive hp/l mine works out at about 130bhp/litre

had a good weekend racing, lowered my PB at Mallala by 1.1 sec
Did a 1.22.8 today in RACE 4 , still have a issue with the car breaking down at 8000rpm due to a interface error at high RPM, will get it sorted on the dyno soon and chase a few more HP
A low 1.21 is more than achievable next state roundhttp://www.natsoft.com.au/cgi-bin/results.cgi?02/05/2010.MALL.R29
