I thought i would start a thread on my race toy! Im sure its the only one here. Im building a MK Patrol to run in Offroad racing. Its a great sport which is growing. Im going to run in the Extreme 4WD class as the old L28 has been replaced with a 308! The build is slow as there is never enough time in the day. My cage has been certifed, i just need to finish painting inside and installing all the safety gear and then its off to get log booked. The body is pretty good, just needs some a bit of a tidy up and then its getting painted. The motor is pretty stock right now, i have electrnoic ignition for it and a 650 holley. Plans are to get a cam in the near future. It sounds sensational, pipes out of the motor, though a hotdog then out the side! how all v8's should be! My plan is to up and racing by december to race at Crookwell club day. Offroad racing is a proper Cams class so require a cams licence etc.

My mate runs an XJ Jeep in the same class. We recently completed a 6000km road trip to Alice springs and back to complete in the Finke Desert race. Its an amazing even with some awesome machines that race across the desert! Its over 400k's of racing, 230km's down to the community of Finke, and then back again. The big guns are doing the trip down in under 2 hours! The winner runs a buggy with a Toyota Arion motor with twin turbo's. Puts out over 700hp, very cool watching it trying to get power to the ground!
The race is very punishing, over 50% drop out. The car finished somehow! on the way to Finke, the car blew 2 tyres, hit a tree, blew the front diff, bent the rear diff, punched the fuel tank.... we fixed it the best we could and sent them home! car made it back!!

One HD is showing highlights of this years Australian offroad racing series regulary so keep an eye out!

iv been watching a bit of the series so far and its great racing.
Your project looks like a heap of fun and should provide some great times during and after the build, good luck.

Update time on my Patrol.

Have now completed my first race!! Has been an interesting few months with alot of work to get the car to the MTQ Griffith 700 race which was run over the weekend of the 24th July. Had to get the car finished, then log booked, then get my licence and then get to the event! all i managed to do!!!

The 700 in the name is the distance, the big buggys completed the distance pretty much none stop, expcept for Fuel in about the 7-8 hour mark. This is real endurance racing!!!! These boys did an amazing job! The track was a 88km loop through the griffith country side. The track was pretty bad! i did a recon lap in my Prado and managed to ribrate 1 of my Driving lights off, to add Fog, Dust, Mud and rocks into the mix! it was a full on weekend.
I was only running the NSW championship conponent which was only a 350km race, so 4 laps instead of 8. I only managed 1 before i broke the old girl. Saturday was prolouge day and the car ran well over the track. I wasn't last which was a good feeling in my first race. Sunday we woke to fog, really bad that they had to delay the start for 40 mins which made no difference. I managed about 20 km before i blew the front diff in the patrol. We then set about removing the front tail shaft to continue on our way, after finally getting going again, there was some major vibrations and shake from the front so decided just to take it easy and get it home. Well no longer than 2 mins later, something flixed up from under the car and ripped the braided line off the front right wheel... so now with no front diff and no brakes we managed to drive it about 70 km's back to pits. as to be classed as a finisher i only had to complete one lap we decided that our day was run!!
As much trouble we had, to be flying through the bush, wind and dust in your face, sideways in 4wd i had a ball! can't wait to get the beast back out again!!!

Good work Steve ... giving it a crack is half the fun.

Good solid rig the Q's ... a mate calls them the cockroach of 4wd. If an atom bomb was ever dropped on Aus ... cockroaches and MQ patrols would be the only things tough enough to survive.

Looks like a heap of fun mate! Something different to the usual "racing" we think of too!

A mate from work is into offroad racing / rock-crawling in a big way - originally in Australia, but now in the US. He's heading over there tomorrow for another race, and competes in King of the Hammers and the like. Pretty insane some of those races! I'm hoping to go for a ride in his buggy over there in October (it looks a bit like that silver/blue "Madden" one above). Can't wait. :D

Keep us posted with future races. :)

Cheers,
- Febs.

Nice work Goanna.

Those diff's are normally very strong but not strong enough to run without oil (i bet you will check ALL fluids next time)

IM building a CJ5 at the moment with a L76, 4L65e and NP205 transfer case (twin stick) which i might get into some of the rock crawling events.
