View Full Version : Smoking Around Children

Well its a pet hate of mine.

People smoking around little ones. Children have no choice of the air they breath, this was even more reinforced when this afternoon whilst in town doing some Christmas shopping I saw a woman having a ciggy, durrie, darb, smoke, whatever you call em :lmao:

No biggy, I see a little head pop up in the passenger seat. I small child about 4 or 5 IN THE FRONT SEAT mind you and the Mother sitting next to her puffing away.

I was miffed but not to much as the window was down and the ciggy in the right hand.

Miffed turned to pissed of when this so called mother took another WOFTAM drag and looked at her kid and exhailed the smoke onto the kids side of the car.

WTF :toetap:

So, I wound down the passenger window and said "excuse me, is your little one enjoying the cigarette smoke there is she?"

To which this "mother" replied "yes thanks she is" With a smirk of sorts on her face.

I just said "thats great", shook my head and wound up the window.

What a effing bad parent. If it was an older kid, say one that could wind down its own window or tell the so called "parent" to STOP smoking then I would not give a toss. But a toddler, man what a idiot.

Dont get me wrong, I dont hate smokers just ones that are parents with youngens that pump it into there young lungs.

It should be illegal to smoke in a car that has a child under the age of 16 in that car.

I have pleanty of mates who smoke and its there choice so I dont care.

Anyway.

Tell me what you think, VOTE in the attached poll, and we'll see if im just being a tea totaler.

Agreed wholeheartedly, although I am only 16 I fear I may have some health problems from second hand smoke, but it's my choice to be around those who smoke.

Maybe I should stop being around second hand smoke.

The nerve of that mother is incredible, she should be fined or something, I can't believe nothing can be done about this.

The best I've seen to date is a bloody Volvo driver smoking a cigar, the mother pulling on a cancer stick and the two kid's in the back seat with all the windows UP:mad:
If you want to smoke thats your choice and your choice alone but, give the kids a break and spare them the poison you choose to take.:headbang:

That effing bad azza, did you give her a serv?

And that last line of your comment could also be an anti smoking around kids line, or is it already?

Noticed this article in the SMH the other day. Its a good idea.
kuringai council here where I live have a law that prohibits smoking around childrens playgrounds.

As most of you know already, Scat and I are both smokers, but we would never, ever consider smoking in our cars. Hell, who wants to have a beautiful, imaculate car that stinks of old cigarettes! you can never really get the smell out.

So regardless of whether or not there are children in the car (apologies to all those with kids!!) it's not something we would ever do.

We also try to be aware of non-smokers, regardless of whether we are at home or out in public, and feel the need to light up.

Cheers

it wasnt that long ago when it was OK to smoke in the car (with kids), nearly all adults did it when i was growing up. And drink driving was "acceptable" too believe it or not. Times change i guess; i wouldnt smoke with kids in the car (if i smoked) it's just plain rude to begin with let alone health issues. Dunno if i would make it illegal exactly, it's their gene pool, natural selection and all that (just kidding)..

Dirty rotten filthy smoker here.... who smokes in his car.

Though I never smoke in the car when travelling 'reasonable' distances with a non-smoker. Anyone going on a trip with me is warned that I'm a smoker (if they don't already know), and I would NEVER smoke in the car if there are kids in it..... though when mine were little, I did. Times have changed though, and we're a lot more aware of the health risks associated with second hand smoke.

I must give up one day......

Troy good thread - I think it should be banned but how the hell would it be enforced?

Honestly I really think it comes down to parents and their ethical decisions. People who smoke whatever (Tobacco, Ice, Pot etc) all know of the negetive side effects of the drugs (Lung cancer, heart disease etc) therefore are making an informed choice when they light up.

My dad is a big smoker and always smoked in the car when i was young, espically on the weekly trip up to Newcaslte, so ive inhaled alot of it! And ive smoked my share of ciggies (im a social smoker - i go through fads) when im out on the town but i would never if i had kids or were around young children smoke as i see the outcome of the addiction on a regular basis.

So yeh my 2 cents :flame: Would be good if everyone didnt smoke in cars but its there choice in the end.

My simple point of view is this ... anyone who has seen the physical results of smoking in the flesh might seriously reconsider what they were doing. :(

Tis scarey shite to see what a smoke damaged lung looks like when removed, the "dramatised" pictures you see on television adverts are 100% accurate.

*Gets off soap box* As to your original question Troy, anyone who would knowingly smoke in front of a child who has no choice in and doesn't understand what may be happening to them ... certainly falls into the category of people who qualify for arse removal IMHO ! :werd:

i cant stand smoking, let alone people that smoke with the children in the car.
My grandfather was a smoker, no he cant walk from the lounge to the toilet without the help of an oxygen machine. if thats the quality of life you want then smoke all you want, but it shouldnt be forced on children.

I'm afraid I'm a vigilante non-smoker - I really hate it ...REALLY hate it. To the point where I have been known to get into pretty serious arguments in restaurants with ignorant and thoughtless smokers. I love the ones who hold the cigarette away behind them so it doesn't annoy the others at their own table, but in so doing they are almost holding it under my nose. I often say to them - "Whilst I acknowledge your right to stupidity in endangering your own life with your smoking, but do you mind if I don't? I also have the right to fart if I please, but I'd think it rude to do so in your face."
As for smoking in cars - I think it shouild be banned full-stop. I'd reckon there are far more accidents caused by smoking than say, using mobile phones. My last wife was hit up the tail while stationary in traffic, by a bird doing 80kph while she tried desperately to find the cig that she'd dropped - she didn't even have her foot on the brake! The impact was so hard that it broke the seat-back off my wife's Volvo and gave her permanent neck injury for life - was given a paltry $30k damages that didn't even pay for medicals.
Also, how many accidents happen because the driver is trying to light a cig, or find the lighter, or the fags, or the dropped ones, or the ash in the eye etc?
Filthy effin things - they should ban them! :flame:

Seldo, have to agree wholeheartedly with you mate. Smoking is pretty inconsiderate as well as all the other things you mention. Our neighbour smokes and he goes out in his back yard to do so, no doubt cos he doesnt want to stink up his own place. However, without fail, it blows downwind to our home, and in our windows and doors to the point where my family and I are gagging from lack of oxygen. We have to close our house up every time he lights up!!! As for smoking in cars with youngsters on board - :mgun:

Seldo, I am with you mate. Not trying to get up the smokers here, but I think a blanket ban while driving should be in place.

Being an ex smoker who smoked for 12 years (idiot), I can honestly tell you its ezy to quit - you just need to want to, and not be made to by others.

One thought I have had and I'm sure I'm not the only one who thought the same, that is right now it is illegal to sell tobacco to persons under 18 years of age.
My idea is what if each year the age limit was raised ie, 2006 18 years and older, 2007 19 years and older, 2008 20 years and older and so on.
You would still have a black market for the drug like any other illegal drug which is a down side to it but it would make it harder for kids and young adults to take up the habit and over a 40-60 year peroid society would be rid of the drug from a legal sense. A basic de-toxic for the community.
In todays enviornment it is getting harder for those that chose to smoke to do so without offending others and made to feel bad if you do. This has a negative affect on your humble smoker thus making it harder to quit as they tend to feel "Why should I do it just for THEM!".

Non smokers here's a thought for you, next time your out with someone who is a smoker and they say "I'm just going out side to light up", try to offer them an alternative by asking to stay with you and offer them a peice of gum or something that distracts them from the cravings of nicotine as these only last a couple of minutes at most.
Did you know that for every cigarette you smoke you shorten your life by 2 minutes on average thus a packet of 25 will take away about an hour of your life which is nothing to you now until your last days with your family when it will mean something to you then.

Remember negative feeds negative, turn it into a positive and you will have positive results.

Aaron.

The subject about smoking came up at work the other day and it lead onto one of the guys telling us how his wife cut back on the sticks while she was pregnant, some days none other days one or two.
Then he tells us about one of his wifes friends while pregnant increased her smoking during that time.

We asked why?

Wait for it...........

SO THE BABY WOULD BE BORN UNDER SIZE SO AS TO MAKE IT EASIER TO PASS AND NOT TEAR ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!
What kind of a f**ked up person would do that honestly, I've heard some shockers in my time but this takes the cake.
IMHO DOCS should of been made aware of this and the child taken away from her at birth, what chance has the child got if the mother doesn't give a shit about your health from conception.:headbang:

I have to agree with the other nurses in the forum. Having seen first hand the effect of smoke in later life, I don't understand how people continue to smoke. Just the other day we had a 66 yr old man brought into hospital to die...of lung cancer. And yes he was an ex smoker. (do any other nurses get the shits with the patients who receive treatment for their cancer only to continue to smoke???) :headbang:

But that's kinda getting off the subject. The fact remains that young kids have no idea of the effects smoking has on you. How can they make an informed decision on the matter and ask their parents "please don't do that in front of me". :toetap:

Tigs: I wish there were more people in the world like you who make an informed decision but choose not to impose it on others...even if you're in your own home!! Thanks guys!!

I think this is just another reason why people need licences to have children!!! The number of wayward kids we get in at work is quite depressing. Just the other week we had an 11 yr old screaming the department down with obscenities (including the "C" word) coz we wouldn't release him (he was being held under the mental health act)...how does that happen in such a young child????!!!! And then to top it off, the mother had to be given Valium to settle her down after the floor show (coz she couldn't afford to get her script filled for her own anti-anxiety meds until "pay day"). Say no more... :whip:

You have just summed up one of the main reasons why I got out of working in the public health system. A very necassary thing these major hospitals but damn it can be an unrewarding and friggin frustrating place ... :werd:

Don't even get me started on the kid's father!!! It infuriaties me/ nauseates me/ makes me wanna hit my head against a brick wall when I see these kids and their parents. 1/2 of me feels sad for the children, the other 1/2 of me wants to bash the parents for being so irresponsible, coz lets face it, most of these kids are the ones who makes us lock our doors at night...twice or more!!!

If only we could all be as responsible and respectible as us trackchat members...lol

As an EX-Smoker I have never smoked in my car while I had my kids or any one else's, and we smoked outside the house even our guests were asked to smoke away from children.
It annoy's me when I see people smoking in cars, windows up and the air-con blowing the crap in to the back seat where the kids sit, Ihave had numerous arguments over this issue, and I have been told "it's ok, becuasee the air-con circulates the smoke" aht a load of shit.
they should be fined under the Child Protection Act or the Health Act.
The kids can't make these decisions, it's our responsability as adults to look after their well being.
