Well its been said that Shell V power is just Optimax renamed :up2sum:

I dont know if this is true or not. I use to use Optimax and found it to be good, fuel econ was 10.5 to 11.0 on the highway and 1/4 mile times were 12.203 @ 114 MPH

When I was in Sydney for the Skid pan day I used V power on the way to Sydney, around Sydney and on the way back to Wagga 3 1/2 tanks in all, maybe more.

I left from North Parramatta towards the end of peak hour. Fuel econ was bad in the stop start/pedal to the boards driving I was doing. At its peak just before getting onto the Hume it was 24.0L/100 :whip:

On the way back down to Wagga that night it was 15 Degrees with AIT's of 25 Degrees.

Slowly but sure the average fuel econ dropped and dropped and dropped. I was traveling at 118KMH with the cruise control on.

At half a tank, exactly, I had traveled 425 km. That is the best fuel econ I have ever gotten with the car post cam. The car said 10.7L/100KM but the stop start city driving had made the average fuel econ higher. I worked it out off of 37.5 liters (half tank) to be 8.8L/100KM

8.8L/100KM for a Gen III 5.7ltr cam fitted and modified car that is, in my opnion excellent

Shell say that V power gives better econ and performance per fill and ATM I tend to agree with them. Its just a shame that out here in the country I find performance fuels to be hit and miss per fill.

I was tempted, very temped to keep driving to Melbourne to have a crack at Lautrays awesome effort of Sydney to Melbourne on one tank, but, well, Gillian would have killed me :lmao:

Just thought Id share the above with you all as Im very impressed by Shell V Power at the moment

But its not all fuel, the PCM edit and cam as well as highway driving style are also very important factors in these figures. Cheers again Sonny :)

Nice work Bomi ... these big engines get some pretty awesome fuel economy when the conditions are good. My only concern with the Shell fuel is the ethanol ... I'm still not 100% sure that it doesn't harm the car in any way ???

i been running the shell fuel for a while now, the local bp has crap fuel, even the 98 make my car play up :(

i have had positive gains in econ and at the strip(with a bit of nulon pro strength) as usuall. its all good from my view:)

Nice figures indeed Major Potato .. I tend to think tis largely due to the extensive amount of time lean cuise would have been activated whilst on the highway. None the less, very good numbers from a 1.7t, CAM wearing V8.

I've tried the V-Power a few times and the scan gauge went NUTS with knock retard with very audible pinging. I can only presume it was the ethanol. Staying away from it myself unless absolutely necassary.

I thought it was only V power racing that had ethanol (it's the 100octane variant) ???

Yeah, I think you're right Kyle.

V-Power i understand is re-branded Optimax

V-Power racing re-branded Optimax Extreme (100RON with ethanol)

Could be wrong though.

Whilst you may be right fellas I think not ATM.

I have run thousands of highway KM's on Optimax and V Power is giving me now far better results.

Does anyone have a difinative answer as to "Is V Power just the old Optimax"

Taken from www.shell.com.au

V power

New Shell V-Power is a high density, high performance 98 octane fuel containing Friction Modification Technology (FMT). Designed to reduce friction in the engine, and improve engine performance and responsiveness, new Shell V-Power has been developed by the same scientists who develop Ferrari?s racing fuels.

V power Racing

For a more thrilling driving experience upgrade from Shell Optimax Extreme to new Shell V-Power Racing, Australia?s only specially formulated 100 octane fuel with 5% ethanol available at the pump. Designed to maximise the acceleration potential of modern cars, Shell V-Power Racing puts performance driving in your hands.

Thanks for that Kyle, that makes some interesting reading

So from what I understand its better then Optimax and I am inclined to agree.

Thanks again,

Wow some people are acutally getting good fuel eco from shell for a change, never been a case with me and my car!

On most fillings on 91/95 octance fuel from shell i would get 200km less out of a tank than when i filled up with say Mobil,BP or Caltex/Ampol even with the same granny driving style that i try to employ.

So Shell is a Neddy no no, always Caltex or Mobil for me :)

Well that tank of fuel lasted me a fare while. A fare bit of around town driving left me with 60KMS to empty when I re-fueled the SS. So Im being conservitive when I say that I would have got about 630km from the tank.

We will see how Wagga's version of V Power go's on our way up to Sydney on Sunday.

Im doubtfull about the quality of Wagga fuel supplies.

Why would the fuel quality be any less? Short of the retailer adding water, doesn't it still come from the same tank from the same refinery  ?

:yep: :yep: :yep: you would be correct Mr K.

Our resident psycho-analyst has even sighted BP trucks departing from the shell refinery at Granville. Interesting hey?

Who, Azza?

I have a mate who drive big rigs and he has seen shell filing up at Mobile etc etc.

Eric, the reason I say that is that I have filled up with "Quality" fuel in Wagga and it has left me with Crap 1/4 mile times and average fuel econ.

Need I remind you of my trip to WSID down and back in the one night.

Tradesman blaming his tools..... oldest cop-out in the book :stick: :stick: :stick: . No need to remind... remember you banging on about it that night :stick: :stick: :stick: .

But, 10 points for making the effort... 4+hrs each way just for 4 runs: if that's not keen, don't what what is  .
