Guys just wondering if anyone can put light on why my rear pads are crumbling?
The pads are Ferodo DS 2500.
The front pads are ok but the rears are falling apart, they have done a couple of wakefield days and probably less than 10,000km's.
At first i thought excessive heat but the fronts are ok and i don't do any burnouts unless at the drags. I use the stock rear brake pads/rotors for drag days and there is no problem with them after a few private drag days.
I can remove the surface using my finger and it falls apart like a biscuit, the lining material looks like it has a rusty colour threw them and the centre of the rear pads appear to be dished as if there was no friction in the center.
The rears have probably 80% left on them and the rotors are in excellent condition.
Any help would be appreciated to identify the cause of this so i can prevent it from happening again.
I am using AP Racing 6/4 calipers and rotors.
This is an example of the fronts.

Holy shit Savvy ... I've never seen anything like that mate. We just stuck these in the GTS so I'm very interested in the reason behind this.

Nick, they are a popular pad for street/circuit and i have not seen it either, just wondering if there may have been a faulty batch or something.
I am replacing them with the same pads.
Would also like to hear of any other brands that also may be suitable to use aswell.

That is interesting . Used DS2500 quite a few times & definitely no issues like that. Perhaps John H may be able to offer an opinion.

Sav ... you had these pads in the rear at the last drag day?
Not taking the piss but perhaps they were overheated during the burnouts ... hence are now breaking down?
Guessing here of course. Either way ... email to the supplier they were purchased from, that aint right.

Serious manufacturing problem... that aint heat from burnouts or anything else. Sitting in the paddock for 6yrs maybe.... Let us know the outcome?

Good point ... probably not scorched properly during manufacturing.

Dave, i had the stockies on the rear to fit the 15" MT's. My first drag day a few years ago i think i had them on but was not doing big burnouts like the last two. The stockies (well not stockies but green stuff) have no signs off falling apart.
There is also no sign of overheating on the AP rotors either (glazing, warping or cracking).

I had them off for about 18mths they were still mounted in the caliper stored in a box in a metal cabinet in the garage next to the rotors, there is definetly no moisture in there and the rotors look like the day they were removed and no other stuff or parts in there has had any probs.
The pads did look normal (like the middle of the two closest to the camera in the third photo) untill i started rubbing my finger over them.
I've gone through many sets of 2500's (including drag use) but NEVER seen ANYTHING like those rears! goodluck.

That is amazing. I read the thread and I thought I could help. Dont think so as it is too different. That looks like a chemical issue or some thing like acid put on the pads.
I experienced a breakdown of brake pads when the fronts got to about 6mm left. It was the old harrops and it went through 6mm of pad in no more than 3 laps at hidden Valley.; Buggered a brand new rotor too. They did not get any hotter than they usually do. I never let the pads get low anymore due to this problem
They did crumble but looked nothing like that. They were at the end of their life and done many many track days.

Definitly no chemicals have been in contact with them, i was thinking car washing may have caused it, but i don't wash the rears any differently than the fronts. I use the same suds that i use to wash the car and only clean the outside face of the calipers while doing the wheels with a fairly dry spong and hose them off. I dont use any spray-on type mag wheel cleaners etc.

 Sav, definitely does not look right. It looks like the material has broken down somehow.
I just changed mine for the track day(Did the rotors as well...), fronts only are hard as rock and look like your fronts, with the rears still with plenty of meat on them.

It is amazing post.I have read it.That looks like a chemical issue or some thing like acid put on the pads.Ferodo products are specified by the world'`s leading vehicle and car manufacturers and are used by many of the top names in motorsports.Ferodo has a product range that includes some of the most advanced braking materials available today. My ferodo zeros have a central grove as well as pads that do not look reddish after 10k.ferodo zeros are known for their initial bite.

Hi,
I have DS 2500 front & rear on my car and whilst I have only just installed them, the first track day they were biting and causing the rears to lock up....fronts fine.
After long discussions with Performance Friction Brakes in Bris, they suggested/stated:
Before the control brakes they were the technical partner to GRM.
GRM used to have significant rear lock up as well and were chasing their tails
[LIST]
They went to a smalled rear disc rotor
[LIST]
They put additional cooling on the rears rotors (320mm)
[LIST]
They upgraded the front pads to more a aggresive material
It might be that they are getting too hot and ripping it apart.
So I have taken this on board and implented several of these changes and heading out to a track day tomorrow. Anyhow I will report back with my findings....
Dan
We will pull the rear pads after the track day and I will
