Well, the last month or so has been interesting....

I managed to get 17,000 km out of the auto trans, then it deteriorated pretty rapidly. Over the next two weeks 1st & 2nd were slipping extremely badly and it was an effort to get the speed high enough to get it to change into 3rd, though once in 3rd it was OK.

Booked it into Belmore Transmissions & Automotive (same people that built Nirvans's box) for Wed 29/11, job was to take 2 days (Wed & Thurs) and I thought middle of the week, gave them Friday if there were any probs. Was quoted $2950, 1 year warranty, they suggest a BMR deep sump for the auto, another $350 odd, increases trans fluid volume, better cooling, I say go ahead. I hired a car from Herz on Wed morning to go back to work etc.

I call BTA Thurs arvo, it wont be finished, no worries another day car hire. Same Friday arvo, no worries, I drive down from the Coast Sat morning, drop off the hire car and head over to BTA. Car is still on the hoist, I sit around for more than a few hrs, car's finally being re-assembled, BTA not happy with exhaust running beside the trans cooler lines, blah, blah, blah, wont be finished.... Go back to Hertz to pick up car again, Herz are closed, Avis to the rescue!!!

The folowing Tuesday, all should be good, drop in mid arvo, car still on hoist, test driven about 5-30, they're not happy with it, drive home 140? km to Central Coast.

I check in every day, finally Friday arvo 8 December, all's go, drop off hire car, back to Belmore about 6pm, handed the keys and bill. Expecting around $3,400 plus, bill is $5834-00 (plus of course now 10 days car hire)... oil's $359 extra, $330 exhaust mod, $595 extra HD oil cooler, $300 cooler lines, $180 cooler line fittings, $75 cooler mtg kit, $650 labour to fit oil cooler & cooler lines. Not happy, but relieved to finally get my car back. Told to change manually for the first week while everything beds in. Check engine light is on, Belmore couldn't diagnose though did have one of the O2 sensors disconnected and test drove it without zorst fitted

On the way home, notice 2-3 change seems a little soft though didn't think too much of it at first, noticed A/C doesn't work.

During the course of the next week drove it like a manual, all seemed Ok, then did a couple of moderate throttle runs letting it self shift.... not happy as it's flairing (badly) in the top of 2nd and the 2-3 shift is like mush.

Dropped by Sonny's, he checks the 'check engine' code and it's one he hasn't seen before and is air con related. I assume the Belmore boys have bumped an electrical connection somewhere. While at Sonny's I book in for a service, I know the car's going back to Belmore so book service for Friday morning 22/12.

Car is dropped back to Belmore Tues arvo and test driven, they agree it's not right and book it in for Thursday morning 21/12.

Coming to work on Wed morning 20/12 I come off the F3 onto Pennant Hills Rd and come to a halt behind traffic. A Nissan Patrol pulls up behind me, stops then sees an opening in traffic in the middle lane, goes for it and proceeds to drive up my ar$e. Doesn't hit me hard but his bull bar dents rear bar, boot and scratches spoiler and number plate panel. Damn!!!!

I drop off car to Belmore Thursday morning as arranged, phone Thurs arvo and speak to one of the young guys, it's just been finished so at 4pm I head off from Castle Hill to Belmore. I'm at Bankstown (most of the way there) and get a phone call, car's not finished, they'll need to keep it over night and they're about to close up. I've no option but to turn around and head home. I ring Sonny to let him know that I wont be able to make my a.m. appointment at Marrano's for my service. He tells me that if I get it back early enough to drop in and they'll do an oil change at least, then do the balance of the service in the new year.

Well it was finished approx 3:30 pm, so I thought way too late to get the service done, however as Marrono's wasn't far out of the way on my way home, I dropped in on the off chance that he may be able to drop the oil and do an oil change, the rest of the service could wait till after Christmas.

Arrived at Marrano's at 4 pm yesterday, the Friday before Christmas, the shop is full, and Sonny says to the boys, "let's get going, it needs an 80K full service".... and it was done!!! The guys finished it about 6pm, all mechanisms greased, car inspected top to bottom, fuel filter, oil change and filter, plugs and leads, air filter, loose sway bar link pin repaired, test driven... and probably some other stuff I can't think of.

Absolutely fantastic service.... I know why I travel so far to get my car looked after... it's worth it if you want the best.

And all though it's been a long and painfull gestation period, my auto trans feels fantastic. The Belmore guys couldn't find a prob with the A/C so I still have the check engine warning displayed so still need to get that sorted... as well as the smash repair, but at least I'm mobile... and the car feels awesome even though it looks a bit shabby!!!!

Wow what a read. Glad that it all turned out good in the end Al.

One question, did the belmore boys advise you of the extra cost?

Are you coming to the LS1 drag day in Jan?

Troy :)

shit allan one drama after another not good.
when the guys at belmore did mine they also stuffed me around for 1-2 days kept promising it will be ready so i can understand but don't know about the extra costs.
i only paid extra for the trans cooler and extended warranty of which we agreed before he started.also my a/c didn't work too i rang ali up and he swears he didn't touch it now thats 2 cars. :toetap:
he also told me not to manualy shift it especialy down shifts.
saying all that he did do an awesome job it still feels very sharp and strong.

Sorry to hear..the bad issues youv'e had with your car...at least Sonny didn't stuff you around....NOT to make you feel bad..but I got my box fully rebuilt by
Craig "Craig's Automotive" for less than half that price...tuffer gears new Sonnax Bushes, Sun Shell & Z pack (3-4 clutch pack) & Shift Kit 12 months warranty

A gentleman to deal with, I recommend his service to any one...

Fark me Al, that's shit.

Does anyone else find these prices far too expensive?
"$595 extra HD oil cooler, $300 cooler lines, $180 cooler line fittings, $75 cooler mtg kit, $650 labour to fit oil cooler & cooler lines."

X.Large B&M transcoolers can be bought for a quarter that $595 price.
$650 labour to fit cooler and lines. Surely it wasnt that big a job, even at 100 bux an hour. It doesnt take 6.5 hours to fit a trans cooler and lines does it???

Id have to say that Id be very dissapointed if I was sprung with a bill like that one.
And as in the above post. Craigs Autos does a built box for 2K with a next day changeover. That might be a good lesson for the next A4 guy that wants a built auto.

6K for that sort of job seems excessive to me. Oil cooler = $120, Lines $40, Fittings...speedpro ones are $80 the lot, WTF is cooler management?? Labour 1hr MAX

Id be asking for a refund on the excessive charges (i wouldnt have paid them to start with)

I must say, this thread has just made me even more sure that I will be going to Craigs when the time comes ... :yep:

Hope the box gives you many, many, many trouble free kms Al ... after all that shit you deserve it.

JEEEZ!!!! Great comprehensive write up.

No point looking back at the past, it only distracts from the Future.

Good luck with it Alan!!

Yep, that's what I thought as well.

I should perhaps answer a few of the questions though:

Craig's wouldn't offer a warranty behind my setup

It's not cooler management, it's a cooler mounting kit

Not sure of make, but trans cooler is much bigger than X.Large B&M transcooler (they removed the APS transcooler that I had fitted and fitted this big mutha). The new trans cooler is about the same size as the big B & M but is about 50 mm deep. It probably holds over 1 litre of trans fluid in the cooler. As said, it's a big mutha!!!! And it's all piped in braided lines with fittings to match.

Sorry Al..the point I was trying to make was that, If Craig charged me that much for mine yours should of been between 3-4 grand depending on what extras you wanted...I think like everyone here was very surprised on the total amount that it cost.
For that kind of money. you shouldn't have any problems too soon, get him to put his money were his mouth is if you have any issues, don't let it drag on until you run out of warranty, I would get every cent's worth out of it.:whip:
I suppose we all learn by trial & error.:headbang:

Thats a Shit Al,

not everyone has had great dealings with craigs either... a certian white car is on the 3rd craigs box now, first 2 lasted about 5min or never got changed in the first place...

needless to say i will do doing that Al had orignally planned to do from now on..

:hmmm: May well be needless to say Dale ... but could you explain it to me anyway ???

 :stick:

So who do we see for gearbox work, there must be a Marrano's / CHE / Russo Performance / Medowie Speedshop, of the gearbox world out there somewhere ???

RedVYIISS
02-01-2007, 03:08 PM
yep, RVO in Melbourne.

I said 'somewhere else' if I was doing it all again, I'd have my local trans specialist pull out the gearbox and send it off to RVO, then re-install on return.

ill give a brief run down,

JGC blew a box with the stock engine, took car to craigs, paied his $2500 or what ever the amount was, told box would be good for 600hp, on the drive home box was flaring just as bad as it was before, took it back, got it back again, same thing still flaring, went back for the 3rd time, after a few heated phone calls and telling him he wants his money back he got the car back and the box was right, so far it has been holding up *ok*

from everything i have heard some people get what they pay for and some dont, we suspect the box didnt even get replaced the first 2 times as it was flaring exactly the same and there were a few other things that made it appear like it had been shift kitted...

lets face it the car wasnt a power house, it had a cat back and a tune, no headers, no cam, no heads, not like it is making enough power to break a box in 5km....then there was the super glue on the inhibit switch so the plugs couldnt be removed with out breaking the switch just for a nice suprise...

RVO seems to be the go,

Thanks guys ... much appreciated. Think I'll be contacting RVO when the time comes.

RedVYIISS came back from the pannel shop yesterday, they've done a great job, looks as good as new.

Thanks to Dale for driving me from Castle Hill to Greystanes to pick her up.

I've been in that crap Nissan Tiida so long I'd forgotten what a beautiful car I have! Might have to soften off the shocks a bit though, I've got them set pretty hard and Sydney roads are not good enough (noticed how hard she rides after being in a couple of 'stock suspension' LS1's recently). It didn't worry me before as most of my driving to/fro work is on good roads, there's plenty of not so good between Greystanes and Castle Hill though.

i take everything i have ever said about craig's autos back,

JGC popped the box last night at the track and Craig said bring it straight down and ill fix it,

he has since done another customers box with a PWR super charger on it and it is also going pretty well at the moment,

That's great to hear as I know that if Josh had to take JGC somewhere else it may have been sitting in the shed for awhile.

Good on Craig!
