I bought a little Canon A590IS (http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/canon-powershot-a590-is/4505-6501_7-32826173.html) for my daughter toward end of 2008. Got some good reviews & quite cheap at ~$160. Not too bad I thought. Worked fine for the most part. Not been used for the last few months. Went to use recently & now it does not want to turn on, & if it does, "change the batteries" comes up on the LCD & then proceeds to shutdown. Tried with fully charged NiMH & new alkaline batteries, so there is another issue somewhere. I thought there may be some miracle "reset" switch/button tucked away somewhere but I couldn't find one.

Obviously it is out of warranty now, so is it worth sending away to be looked at (pay to fix) or just throw straight into the bin & buy something else?

Advice/thoughts?

That's a bugger. I was going to suggest trying new alkalines, but you've already done that. Were they good alkalines? Digicams use a lot of juice, and I've had cameras that won't even turn on without a really good (and $$$) set of alkalines, even if the batteries are brand new. Something like those "e2 Titaniums" usually work well.

Unfortunately I'd guess that paying to fix it would probably run you close to (if not more than) the cost of a replacement camera. I'd drop by JB or similar and see what they've got on offer - these things just get cheaper and cheaper.

Cheers,
