Ok firstly just a bit of background as to what's been happening......

Toward the end of last year I was diagnosed with "chronic fatigue syndrome" which is a real bitch to deal with at times and so I began my own "programme" to help with recovery and to deal with it best that I could. There are different variances of this debilitating illness (of which mine was slight compared to others) and so I was determined to meet it head on and control it if not beat it.........still having my off days though :(

So I changed my diet, started doing regular exercise/walking and now with lots of conditioning and strengthening work, also drinking plenty of water to rehydrate (ffs didn't know it existed ) and am now starting to feel the benefit of the lifestyle decision to change my habits. In two and a bit months I've shed 10 kilos of fat, increased my fitness no end and am starting to get the muscle mass and definition that the Possum is  over :whip:

Now because I'm really starting to up my training routine and looking forward to it on a daily basis (but it fuking near killed me when I started I can tell you  :faint: ) I will be playing over 35's soccer this year.If that goes well for me and when/if I get my lower back sorted out (which is getting better I might add) I'll be looking at maybe Muay Thai in the near future as an alternative for the fitness and endurance side of things whilst learning a proficient and aggressive style of fighting technique which appeals to me.

Are there members here that do this style of fighting that can recommend a place relatively close to the Blacktown area so as I can make some enquires.I'd like to go to a place that is family orientated as my son would like to go as well, has no egos and is a fun environment if you now what I mean that makes you want to keep going back again and again.

All suggestions welcomed :D

I know of some guys who've competed internationally quite succesfully, and a mate of mine trains in Thailand. I'll make some enquiries and see what I can come up with for you :)

Also can't help on the Muay Thai stuff ... but good on you for making a change mate, people like to give you shit about being healthy but it's only because they aren't and they know it!

Congrats on the results to date ... keep it up!

Two phone calls later -

A couple of places mentioned, Bulldog Gym in Castle Hill has had plenty of successful guys come through, and their trainers are of a high pedigree.

Castle Hill Self Defense Centre was the other one mentioned positively, and it might be a bit less 'full on' compared to the Bulldog team.

I'd call into both these places and suss them out, I'm sure one of them will fulfill your requirements. If your young fella gets taken into the sport and wants to go further with it, then Bulldog would be a good launching pad.

Years ago the Bob Jones gyms used to get a bad rap for attitudes, I don't know if this is still the case as I've drifted away from that sort of scene over time.

Neither of the guys I spoke to have been to either of these Gyms, but they've both fought guys who've been through Bulldog. And one of them "knows a guy who knows a guy" who's been to Castle Hill SDC.

I've put out a couple of other feelers to see what else I get, but I'm not expecting results any time soon.

Haha thanks mate but to tell you the truth I've actually had nothing but positive feedback from those around me so far which is refreshing  I've set myself some long term goals and I'm hell bent on achieving them :yep:

Top effort Justin thank you very much for that I appreciate you doing that for me and don't sweat on the other feelers as like I said it's one step at a time for this old fella :chuckle:

I can't help with the Thai, but goodjob Daz! :D

Years back I use to rollerblade (in-line skates) found it was great for stress relief and non-impact cardio.

At the beginning of the year, started taking multi-vitamins and dropped 5kg's without trying. Use to have aches in shoulders, elbows, and back but no pain since and feel great. I hope this helps.

Cheers,
Steve

I know a guy who used to be into kick boxing but he did most of his training around the Hurstville/Rockdale area.

All the best with it and i hope you find a place that you and your son can really enjoy going to.

Since my fantastic news last week,my infection healing and the scar just about right well last night I walked/jogged for about an hour around the local football fields and then followed that up a game of football with the guys at practice so about 2 1/2 hours training all up.

I've been pushing myself prior to that to attain a level of fitness required that would allow me to be able to do that and I pulled up really well but a bit stiff this morning. That's due to a lack of match fitness being a month away from the game so total rest day today and so all good.

A light run tomorrow with the 11s and then come Friday night I make my return for the O35s in an apparent "grudge" match so should be interesting to say the least but one up for as I hate confrontation ;)

So if anyone is keen for a look see the match is at Quakers Hill Soccer Club - Quakers Reserve, Walker Street, Quakers Hill @ 6.30.I play for Blacktown Premier Spurs in the gold guernsey and I'm the number 3 so come and say hi  and give Quakers Hill hell from the sideline

Hey mate,

Welcome to the ring.

Boxing is great for getting fit, loosing weight and self confidence.

I started training in Muay Thai at the beginning of the year. I was training two times a week in 3 hour sessions.

I was training at a mates house in Ramsgate where he had converted his garage into a gym. Literally I walk in an he locks the door and I dont get out till the 3 hours is up.

I did a few Muay Thai camps when I was in Thailand at the beginning of the year and was offered to fight in a competition on one of the Islands but I politely refused as my travel insurance doesnt cover being beaten up in a paid fight.

I can highly recommend these guys:

http://www.spma.net.au/

They are located in Concord and have two fighters/trainers that are in the UFC.

After a while you could do some BJJ and maybe start to do some MMA. Good fun.

One of my friends trained at this Muay Thai camp in thailand and loved it. She is a professional MMA over in europe. You could go over train hard for two weeks and relax on the beach afterwards!

http://www.tigermuaythai.com/

Anyway just go and have a try. All you need is some good flat soled shoes, good hand wraps and some gloves (Everlast and Lonsdale are the go). Wear boardies and a shirt you aren't afraid of getting trashed!

Have fun!

Hethro :)

Thanks for the info Hethro....appreciate it mate :)

As for 3 hr training sessions hmmmmmm I'll have to work my way up to that level sloooooooowly as it'll be a bit different to football training

The whole idea behind choosing Muay Thai came about because I liked the fitness aspect of it (which will give me a massive edge in other sports) and if I have to it will teach me to put someone down quickly and then walk away........I could do with the discipline to do just that.Plus the fact that my 10 year old wants to learn how to protect himself before he goes off to high school as Blacktown Boys High isn't the most user friendly school for new students especially nice kids like my son.

I've already made enquiries at CHDC and it will suit our immediate needs as father and son starting from a beginners level and also it's pretty handy to get to.....I for one am really looking forward to it!

No worries mate!

Your never too old, Charolette was 28 when she started and has only just gone pro so there is proof!

Haha don't worry you will build up to it, I'd love to do some training when I'm in America at the end of the year heaps of places that you can go to. Like to go watch some MMA when I'm over there too.

Thats great your getting your son involved - self confidence is so important when your in school. My Dad taught me a bit of boxing when I was in high school and was invaluable.

Also something like brazlian ju jitsu will be awesome for rugby, you will develop very explosive take down power.

Hope your not too concerned about diet. Im a firm believer with excercise comes a good diet. It should come with it. Suppliments are ok - maybe a multivitiamin once a day and some standard protien powder from these guys http://www.vitaminking.com.au/ will help you alot. I'd recommend Mushashi Bulk - cheap, good stuff, made in OZ and good results. Drink it 3 times a day. Mid morning, after training and one hour before you go to bed. Have it with full cream or lite milk depending on if you want the extra calories or not. They are located in Stocklands mall in Merrylands - I dont know if you are near there? Jayd is awesome, a professional body builder who works there will show the right stuff. Cheap as chips too!

Have fun!! :bat:

Thanks for the link Hethro and yeah Merrylands is where my parents live so nice and handy for me :)

I don't know that Brazlian Ju Jitsu will come in handy for soccer :lmao: but this interests me also as grappling is necessary in some situations.I do realise that age and how you feel can be a 'state of mind' but fuck me that game I had on Friday night was harder than I thought it would be and after 90 mins I was a bit worse for wear :faint: .....thank fuck for the odd liquid refreshment  and Pain Away post match :bravo:

For the record we lost 1-5 but I thoroughly enjoyed my time on the field and I had this one dude take offence to a tackle I made on him (he'd been hacking our guys all night so I chopped him hardcore) and he shaped up to me but he was very slooooow if you know what I mean....wtf would you do that and not expect a response  ..........what did I do ref :dunno: ................I've no idea what your on about..........:chuckle:

Good on ya Daz, nothing wrong with taking care of yourself mate :) Must admit i been trying to do the same of late, and from one dad to another, its always good being able to run around after the kids, without being buggered after a few minutes :)
Im not at the stage of boxing, but been walking heaps, and riding where i can... Seems to be a good mix!!
Oh, and you can keep your Muay Thai. I have a mate who now lives in Thailand as is a pro boxer... he is a mental case.... I can just see you once you got it all down pat, and the DadHaT comes on, and you turn into Psycho Thai Boxing Wombie DadHAT... The poor person who pisses one of your kids off Hehehehehehehe..

All the best mate, hope you get it licked, and promise me now, you will never hit me :) lol

Haha sorry mate I thought you played leauge!

I'm heading their tomorrow so I'll see what goodies they have. I'm in need of some high protien low carb mix to get in me in shape (have 6 weeks havent trained for 3 months due to a finger injury) before I head over to America!

Good to see your having fun - maybe water instead of beer? :P

Very true - I went to boarding school in Yr7 and was constantly bullied by a Yr9 guy until I got fed-up and I cleaned him up after sports one day up in the cloak-room in front of all his mates. :bat: I never had any trouble all the way through the rest of my schooling.

True story..

A bit off topic, but I remember when I was in Year 5, a Year 10 kid picked me for a fight. This kid was the school bully and everyone at school knew of the fight. When I didnt show up to the fight, he came around to my house and pushed my mum out of the way to get at me and broke into my house. I held my own against him, but he was too strong. Anyway on the way home he was riding his skateboard down a main road and got killed by decapitation by a truck rear vision mirror.

Funny...I never got picked on again.

... I remember when I was in Year 5, a Year 10 kid picked me for a fight.

This is the sort of shit that I don't get ... if (when we were in Yr 10) we heard of a guy in our year picking fights with kids in Year 5 we would have sorted him out ourselves. What sort of friggen' hero picks on kids half their age.

I was fortunate to be in the swim team all through senior school ... it was a close knit group and the senior guys looked after the younger guys. Never had a single issue all the way through school, when we reached the senior years we returned the favor by keeping a watch on the junior guys coming through.

Ok after recovering very slowly from a serious foot injury sustained mid soccer season,I've ramped up my cardio work just recently and I will start Muay Thai training next Monday (2-3 nights per week) and will throw in a couple of intense weights sessions for good measure as well as the usual training on the football field with my 10 year old son.

I'll be sticking with my diet as it's worked well so far for me so no need to change it imo and will be giving this a crack http://www.vitaminking.com.au/hydroxyburn-pro-by-body-science-bsc-while-stocks-last.html to see if it has the desired effect I'm after.

Like I mentioned else where I'm only looking for that initial kick start and that's all.

My goal over the long term is to be lethal on both the O35s soccer and masters footy field next year and to be super fit for the health challenges that may or may not lay ahead of me in the years to come....either way I'll be better served!

Muay Thai has got me the most pumped though that I just can't wait for it to start and get my teeth right into it

Cheers,

Daz

Bit of an update...

I've been going now for just under two weeks which equates to 8 lessons and have been offered to advance from the beginners class too intermediate for more intense workouts/training.

I'm very pleased with myself atm as I've surpassed one of my goals so early in the piece :D but I'm under no illusion that I'm gunna hurt hard core next week lol

Any time i hear Muay Thai and health and fitness or sport is always good for a laugh the more you learn the more you get hurt . But you get a sense of satisfaction i think. The better you get the less you will want / need to use it, if that makes sense .

WOMBIE
13-09-2010, 05:08 PM
Your right about the hurt part as you learn more because my legs and abs were hurting massively last Friday but I don't mind that one bit :weirdo: and yes it was very satisfying being approached and invited to take the jump to the next level!

I agree with the more you learn part because I can certainly use the discipline but believe me when I say that I honestly thought that I would be only doing maybe 1-2 days per week to supplement my soccer training (as that's what it was all about) and not the 4 days I'm doing now.....of course I'm hooked aren't I

The people are fantastic which is a massive plus with the trainers being just awesome plus the fact that my son and daughter love it makes it a very enjoyable experience :yep:

ALWAYS move foward and keep it short and sweet

Exactly that's the key for sure as it WORKS :yep:

Well I had my 1st grading last week and passed without a too much of a problem but it was quite intense cardio wise and it went for a little over 1 1/2 hrs.A few little things to work on (mostly technical) as can be expected after only 3 and a bit months at it.Gradings range from an A+ down to C- and whilst I didn't achieve an A (quite a few B+ results) I was the only one who was going for my yellow singlet that didn't get a C in anything and so I'm very pleased with my work to date :hat:
