A few of my mates have started up a band. We have gigged a few times, and some songs we play we think will nail it, and yet the punters continue chatting and drinking. Then other songs they really get into it.

We do understand that levels of  influence how much they get into it, but we are looking at redoing our whole song list. What I am after is your input into the all time classic cover songs that you would like to hear in a pub.

Here is a start of our song list. (In no order)

Very eclectic I know...but we try to cover all age groups

You shook me all night long (AC DC)
Blister in the Sun (Violent Femmes)
No Second Prize (Jimmy Barnes)
Listen to the music (Doobie Brothers)
I gotta feeling (Black eyed Peas)
Crazy little thing called love (Queen)
Bad Moon rising (Creedence)
Free fallin (Tom Petty)
Folsom Prison (Johnny Cash)

Request away!!!!!

Don't mind on the odd occasion belting out a good pub song, something you can put a soul into. Agreed that the beers have an influence and agree even more that people like me shouldn't sing but here are some suggestions that I have put everything into in the past. Apolgies if there are any double ups, I looked through and didn't see them. I am bit of an Aussie fan, but doesn't have to be.

Favourite - Hunters & Collectors - Holy Grail
Hunters & Collectors - Throw your arms around me
The Angels - Am I ever going to see your face again (this one usually gets altered by the crowd :D )
Kenny Rogers - The Gambler
Meatloaf - Anything for love
Bon Jovi - Livin' on a prayer
Cold Chisel - Khe Sanh
Various covers - Proud Mary

I'll keep thinking  Perhaps I need a few  to stir the memory :)

Thanks for the replies...keep then coming...

I will tell you a funny thing about crowd mentality.

Here I am playing on stage, first pun gig, early in the first set, and some chick yells to her friends, "This band is f@rking up my favourite song." I could hear her say this over my amp and all the other noise. By the end of the night she was p1ssed and cudddling us all saying we were the best band she ever saw.

Thank God for alcohol.

I've always loved Piano Man by Billy Joel.

Even on guitar. Obviously one person only, no support.
Crowd really gets involved

Gives the other guys in the band a chance to have a drink.

It wasn't a Ricky Martin number wasn't it ... were you trying that sexy dancing again ?

 :hide:

Some classic songs here, they don't make 'em like they used to.

There are a couple of songs where I get a break and I love it.

Aeroplane by the Chilli Willies (RHCP) usually gets a decent response. :) I reckon SSUte01's list is pretty spot-on too, and as Troy said - anything that'll stir up a bit of pride, particularly Khe Sahn, usually never fails. :)

I guess it depends on what your audience is like. Age? Suburb/area etc..? Mixing BEP and ACDC might be a bit weird for some crowds, but may work well with others.

Cheers,
- Febs.

Thanks for all the replies people. Much appreciated.

We are trying to cater for all crowds, hence the very different genres. We do get surprised looks when we go from Genre to Genre, but we will also vary the songs depending on the crowd.

We have about 30 songs now we can do no problem and will aim for about 50 so we can vary.

The reason we chucked in Black eyed Peas, was after our last gig, we finished the set and left the stage and "I gotta feeling" came on from the DJ and the crowd went nuts. Mind you the average age in the crowd was probably 35!

It is great fun listening to a song in the car, frantically scribbling the song down on the back of your hand, racing home, using the net/utube/ etc to work it out, then an hour later belting it out over the phone to the other band members. I just did it with 'Drive' by Incubus. Great buzz! Interesting thing as well. Generally the best, most popular songs are the least technical to play or work out!
