Fantastic Second Place for Alan East Motorsport

14 February 2010

David and Des Wall, and Trevor Symonds have driven home their Alan East Motorsport Mitsubishi Evo IX GSR in 2nd place in today’s Armor All Bathurst 12-Hour Showroom Enduro.

In a 12-hour race that was dominated by changeable weather and safety car interruptions, reining Australian GT Champion David Wall started the race and from that point on the whole team did not put a foot wrong.

Starting in 9th place David kicked off the race with a double stint and when he came in to hand the car over he had the team running comfortably in 2nd place.

At about the four-hour mark heavy rain began falling around the Mt Panorama Circuit making it unsafe to continue racing. The decision was made to bring out the safety car. Conditions continued to deteriorate and the safety car stayed out for significant period. It was then that the race was stopped completely for 40 minutes when a large tree fell across the track at the exit of Forest Elbow.

After a number of interruptions, the race came down to a one hour sprint to the end.

David slotted back into the driver’s seat with just 70 minutes left of the race. Coming out on the track in 2nd place David set about chasing down the BMW that was 1 minute and 17 seconds in front of him.

David drove as hard as he could and was reeling in first place by up to 6 seconds a lap and with half an hour to go, he had closed to within 39 seconds of the leader.

The team had been wishing for a safety car to fall their way in the closing stages of the race to help close the gap. Unfortunately, the safety car period came too late and with just 15 minutes left on the clock, and with David edging ever closer to the elusive first place the safety car came out and the race was finished.

The team were obviously disappointed to come so close to taking out the win, but were also over the moon with the second place finish.

“Everything we perfectly for us today; the car ran like a dream and we didn’t make any mistakes on the track,” David said after the race.

“The whole team threw everything we had at the race today. Our car was brilliant in the greasy conditions; we just did not have the pace in the really wet conditions to match it with the BMW.

“To come so close has definitely made me hungry for more – I really hope we can come back even stronger next year and got one step higher on the podium. We have unfinished business here!

“I have to thank the team for the amazing effort they have put in this weekend. I also have to thank my sponsors Shannons and Mount Aqua for their continued support and given it is Valentine’s Day I have to say thank you to my wife Amy for always supporting me!”

Fantastic result, evryone must be stoked, that's no mean feat, even moreso considering the weather. I wonder how much of an advantage the TC stickers were :D

What a massive effort ... considering everything that goes into this sort of race even finishing is an accomplishment. To finish in 2nd while running so fast and to have so few issues all day is a real credit to the whole team.

It's a shame we didn't get the chance to see a finish at race speed, hopefully next year you can go one better.

Congrats guys ...

Any word on the offical placings? The Ford Forums are claiming a disqualification of the car and the clubby wagon too

http://www.fordforums.com.au/showpost.php?p=3086310&postcount=204

Well, just a little update.... Our F6 has now jumped to 5th Outright......One of the EVO's (not sure exactly which one yet....) has now been disqualified. I believe its due to running boost at above road car levels.
And I also believe the Wagon will also be disqualified, lifting us up to 4th Outright, and 2nd in Class!!!
